We keep seeing a falcon flying really high overhead at Etobicoke and I notice last week that Quest was in the area again.  We figure it's a 'she' as she very high up and still is identifiable to us as a falcon.  She flies at a high enough altitude that our pair don't feel threatened by her and know she is just passing through.  I told Frank that I bet it's Quest and today he told me that he thought he saw "quest' again before lunch  laugh

Hamilton, we have lift off.

Peter, one of four peregrine falcon chicks atop the Sheraton Hamilton Hotel took to the skies Wednesday, with a little help from Mother Nature.

Brad Asseltine, co-ordinator of the Falcon Watch co-ordinated by the Hamilton Naturalists' Club, says the 42-day old chick may have had some help from a gust of wind, but he left the nest ledge and circled the hotel at 4:20 p.m.

His mother, Madame X, wheeled around the hotel with him, but he couldn't quite make it back to the Sheraton and spent the night on the Thompson building next door, walking and flying back and forth. Asseltine says on the Falcon Watch website that Joseph took off Saturday. Henderson and Chedoke, the two other chicks in the nest, are restless and will likely take wing any time. The four chicks were named after Hamilton hospitals.

This is the 16th season peregrine falcons have nested on the hotel.

!!! Sad news indeed! The Ottawa nest has failed this year!
June 21, 2010 - Ottawa - Crowne Plaza
admin Reports:

Hello All
Unfortunately Ottawa’s Falcon Watch will not be taking place this year. Diana’s 2nd attempt at hatching her 3 eggs seems to have failed, and a 3rd attempt is unlikely.

We are keeping an eye on her, but are now looking forward to the 2011 season.

Thank you for your support for our falcon family, and for our volunteers’ efforts.
Eve

!!! And now let the screaming start!
June 21, 2010 - Mississauga - Executive Centre

(LOL, that's his whole report)! silly

Mark Nash Reports:

!!! The kids maybe out of the house, but the parents still have a big job ahead of them!
June 21, 2010 - Toronto - King Street
Mark Nash Reports:[/b][/color]

While the “kids” maybe away from the house (or the nest ledge) at the moment, its only for a short time. The resident adults still have the hardest part of their job still to come. Protection, feeding and training the “teenagers” to fend for themselves. For the next 30 to 90 days, the juveniles will be utilizing the nest ledge and still sleeping there most nights. The adults will have to teach them all of the life skills that the juveniles will have to learn to survive to adulthood, or should I say, just survive another day)!! Remember that by mid September, thousands of years of hard wired instincts will have the young juveniles head south on a migration and with upwards of an 80% mortality and many perils and risks, the youngsters will need all of the help that they can just to survive their first year. The adult parents have their job cut out for them trying to teach the juveniles how, what and where to hunt food, and how to recognize and escape from all of the “bad guys” out there.
Stay tuned, and look to the skies, as the best viewing is yet to come!!

Peter has company in the skies…
-
Sarah Washington Reports:

Well Peter has been doing very well with his flying. His brother decided to join him on Saturday.
When Jospeh took off, Peter went after him to play.

Henderson and Chedoke are still in the nest ledge. Although, Henderson looks like she may fly at anytime.

The parents will not feed the nest chicks as often to try and entice them to the air. When their siblings are rewarded with food…we hope that they are getting the picture “If I fly I get grub”…

We shall see what happens…
