Since changing the logo for any established brand is dicey, I appreciate Shaky's explanation for doing so in this instance. It will be interesting to see if the change makes a difference in sales. I admit to having bought nothing with the current logo on it. With the exception of some Birdorable items, my purchases have been more specific, like my Mariah and Kaver ornaments. I don't think the images on any of the things I have bought would make good logos. For me, at least, there is a significant difference between brand identification (logo) and what I choose for personal use or display. I wonder if that distinction is shared with others and how much it accounts for the $100 vs $10,000 difference in purchases. In any event, I think we need to keep the purpose of a logo (quick brand ID) in mind as we look for a new one.

I agree with Kapi. I did purchase one item (a cap) with the logo, but the vast majority of my purchases are to remember a particular bird-like the Quest tour shirt-or a particular memory-like the the M&K standoff mug. And calendars...and...and... Most items have the logo, but that wasn't the primary reason I purchased the item. Perhaps that's a function of the type of group we are-more personally involved with each individual bird than the species as a whole. Perhaps that's why I'm favoring the design(s) with the Rochester skyline (so far).

That's why I DON'T like the skyline images, Ei.
At least, not for a logo. I might buy a tee-shirt with that image done large but I think it is way too busy for a small logo image on a cap, for instance.

You might well be right, Kapi. I still don't know where I'm going to land yet on my favorite design. I'm just thinking out loud why logo items aren't more popular overall with this group-perhaps more so our personalities & group dynamics than the logo itself.

Well, I'll speak up for the Merchandise team, of which I am the chairman. Way back, I pulled together a very talented team of Rochester folks to work on a project I had thought had potential to raise a lot of money for the Rfalconcam. You may all remember it.
We reached out to the Rochester Falcon Watchers to collect bits and pieces of yellow masonry that had fallen to the ground. Such important pieces of Rochester Falcon history. Do you remember now?
If you guessed BRICKS FOR CHICKS, you are correct. This and M&M's for M&K raised a lot of money, with your help. We thank all of you that purchased a piece of Rochester Falcon history of their own.
The other team members are Kathy O, Dana, Marcia, Carrie, Lou & Shaky.
We, the Rfalconcam Merchandise Team, are currently offering for sale, besides what is listed on "The Scrape", Christmas Cards, Note Cards with a design by Dale Pesmen (thanks Dale), and Lou's post cards. All proceeds go to the running of RFalconcam.
This won't be the first time we've changed the logo. Those that have watched from the beginning know that the current Rfalconcam originated as the Kodak Birdcam, which had their own logos that changed each year. Please help us choose our new logo by continuing to leave feedback on which ones you like and the reason why. Suggest changes.
Anne, you asked if non-Rochester folks had volunteered to help out. The answer is yes. Shaky put out a call on the forum for volunteers for various things we needed help with and many answered. Thanks to all of you that answered the call.
Be on the look-out for more calls for help. We are very appreciative of all of you that volunteer to help. Thanks!

Wow, there are a few more very interesting logos...I'm enjoying the competition and creativeness!
#62 is a modification of #28 and I'm impressed with the change. I like it now because even though it is a sleek and modern abstract, I can picture our falcons with that particular posture.
In my opinion, logos are accents to the merchandise, and not the reason a purchaser buys the item. The logo shouldn't overpower the purchase, but ID the source of the merchandise and subtly promote the organization.
I too have bought several items over the years, but the only one I have with the current logo is the Quest design on a shirt. Even though it is big, I didn't mind it because it acts as the Q in Quest.
As I mentioned before, I like simplicity, and I am hoping rfalconcam merchandising committee will come up with some jewelery items as well, and if it can incorporate the logo, all the better.
Once a final winner winner is chosen, is it possible to negotiate with the submitted artist to use one of their designs for a lesser fee on specific merchandise? I think #47 and #69 both work well in that situation.

I've just looked them all over again tonight, and still really like #47. I must confess, the "cute" logo didn't make me want to wear it, it's just TOO cute as a signature for Rochester's fierce birds... I think #47 says so much more, and can see it looking great on a T-Shirt.

I am so very sorry I questioned anything. That I seemed to assume that everything ran along smoothly, without the hard work of the few. Thanks to all who support this forum, do the hard background work. I'm sure you find it fulfilling and that we certainly benefit from your work. I'm sorry, in this format, that I am sometimes slow in catching what is going on... I will sit back and learn and enjoy what I can, where I can. Please keep up with all your amazing efforts, what you see as best for the group!
Best wishes,
Anne in Toronto

Anne - Please don't apologize for asking. I just wanted to let you know what was happening from the Merchandise Team side of things. I really hope you will consider volunteering in the future. We can definitely use the help.
Take care,

Thank you, Shaky, for your prompt and informative answer!
Is it necessary to live in Rochester, so that you can actually get together for these committees? Surely not! With the communication wonders available to us in this modern age...
Most live in Rochester. Things like assembling merchandise, packaging merchandise, mailing packages, picking up checks in the mail, depositing checks, etc. require being in Rochester. So does organizing fledge watches and attracting local sponsors. Also some committee members don't have computer access at home, and this necessitates face-to-face meetings.
The same is not true for people who work on the website. Since they don't need access to local resources, they can live just about anywhere.

You'll have to ask the Committee Hiding Committee.

No, Carol, I wouldn't dream of volunteering. I really wouldn't be good enough to work with any of you experienced folk. I have now learned my place. No, I will stay quiet and out of the way.

I still like 47 but the version 72 would be doable, not so busy a background but still recognizable. (for those who thought it was too much) But there is something about the facial markings that do not seem quite right, in my opinion. What would it look like with the falcon being the same as in 47 (silhouetted)? I like how the colors are on the word to make falcon stand out.
60 attracts my attention too.
Some of the others though nice do not say falcon to me, they could be eagles, hawks any bird of prey. I'm not trying to insult anyone but the falcon has to be a falcon. then the rest of the design will fall into place.

Anne, I think all of us not in the inner circle of this group were curious about why we need a new logo. I can't see any harm in your questions and I would bet my life that
NOBODY
took offense at what you said. I'm sad that you feel you should keep your opinions and questions to yourself, or that you don't fit in here anymore for whatever reason. You said you have "learned your place", but I think your place is right here chiming in with any and all questions and comments. I personally have enjoyed your comments for years and want to continue hearing from you.
