Wow, Donna, what super pix from the nestbox this morning. Cannot wait to read what the experts think about this little turn-up! Being bad at ID-ing, I assume it is not Archer... and forgive me if this was answered before - but do we know anything about this new lad?

Hi Bobbie, no, he is unbanded, which makes it more difficult for anyone to ID. He's been around for a few days...weeks now. He may be just passing through but by the looks of things, he's tying to Woo miss Beauty. She's not really acting like she's interested, although they were bowing to each other yesterday. Guess she is just having some Winter fun, a girl does get bored all alone, by herself, in the Winter. We'll just have to wait and see how this unfolds.

Beauty and her friend are currently on the Widows Walk next to each other.  One is eating and the other is watching or waiting their turn.  For some reason I thought it was the Tiercel eating while Beauty watched, but I couldn't be sure.  Too far.

It looks and sounds as if there has been some pair bonding going on between Beauty and the Unidentified Male.  I think I saw some bowing to each other in the pictures the other day.
What does this mean?  And what happens if/when Archer returns?  Will there be a territorial battle?

Could be Annette.  Or it might be his own little white fluff, coming off.   :happy:

When that happens on my cockatiels, I just have to take it off.  lol

It will be interesting if this Tiercel sticks around.  Or maybe he has his own territory somewhere up north and is just spending the Winter with a friend.

I think the same thing is happening with Stella at the Central Terminal nestsite in Buffalo.  She has been hanging out with a new male, while her male is gone.

It would have been neat if this Tiercel hanging out with Beauty was banded and we could track where he came from and maybe if he was already part of a nesting pair somewhere else.

And when Archer returns?

We'll just have to wait and watch.   :yes:

Snowing yet again in the fair city of Rochester, NY.  No visits at the nest box by Beauty or her friend yet today and I couldn't spot any falcons from KO South this morning.  I'll look again this afternoon.

By the way...I was in another RFC section yesterday and spotted this note about last winter...

2010 - Beauty remains in Rochester for the winter. An unbanded adult male courts her in late February but disappers a few weeks later. Archer arrives in late March.

I remember the unbanded male from last Winter.  We had our suspicions that it might have been the male from the pair at the Brighton location, but we were never able to confirm this.  Joyce is sure that the male being seen at the Brighton location currently is NOT the male being seen with Beauty.

The falcon that was there left at 7:45. MAK cannot find any sign of them. She thinks they may be the 2 hanging out at the Brighton location. Maybe the male is wooing her over there!!!  :o He better not! Beauty get your head on straight.....remember Archer???

I really doubt that Beauty will leave her territory.  If she is visiting the Brighton location, she can still see the downtown area from there.

I'm tellin' ya - Mr T means business!!!

He only stands a chance if Archer doesn't come back or is injured in some way. Beauty is not going to give up on a proven Stud (muffin) for a whiny guy who cant even catch his own dinner, let alone catch food for future eyas . She's bored and lonely he's fun and here. Winter is long...though I agree Archer should keep his tail feathers home where he belongs.

I truly believe he is just keeping company with her and eating her leftovers is a bonus. A couple of the veteran watchers have discussed it with me and we feel he is not displaying the behavior of a possible mate but that of an immature falcon. That being said if he sticks around until Archer returns there may be some issues!  :gum:

One thing Mr T has done...is give the local watchers and rfalconcam some winter excitement.  We've all enjoyed watching them, because if he wasn't here, we may not have seen Beauty so active.  

Another thing to keep in mind is don't underestimate this tiercel.  The UB falcons had a pair (BB and Smoky) that raised a successful clutch.  The second season, in came young "Yankee" from Niagara Falls and took over as BB's mate.  We are going to see more and more rotation of pairs as the population increases.

Like everyone, I want to see Archer return and look forward to seeing him as a second season father.  I doubt he will stare at the hatched eggs this year. :laugh:

Has anyone spotted Beauty today? I checked the cams forwards and backwards....nothing. Not even on Mercury, unless she was on the base. Kinda unusual for her not to be seen on one of the cams. :(

Not sure if they bowed to each other or not last year, but it will be interesting to see if this Tiercel leaves on his own this year, before Archer returns.  What an interesting behavour, if this Tiercel has a mate and nest site of his own somewhere and he winters here in Rochester with Beauty.  Very interesting indeed.  OK, I just love watching their behavours.   :happy:

Personally, I hope he does leave and there is no territorial battle between the two Tiercels.

2011 Tiercel

2010 Tiercel

When comparing the 2 males, the malar stripe (mustache) on the 2010 Tiercel is narrower, and the auricular patch (white area behind the mustache) is quite visible.  The 2011 Tiercel (Mr. T) has a wide malar stripe and the auricular patch is slight.  It is my opinion, they are not the same visiting males.

The visibility, today, as I drove through Rochester was bad.  I've been doing a  lot of driving between Greece and Victor in the last few months. Big difference!   As I approached the city this morning, from the West side, the visibility was bad, and I thought of all of our falcon watchers.   There were three cars off of the road -- that I saw -- and  I knew our watchers were still out there.  So thank you, again, to all of our watchers.    The sun came out later but it was tough this morning.

Yes Donna, you are correct.  I ran into Kathy O this afternoon and she said that Beauty and Mr. T were side by side on OCSR just before the snow squall came through.

I noticed this morning that camera 1 is not tilting up as high as it should. If you compare Monday morning's pictures of Mercury with this morning's, you'll see what I mean.

I was running some tests this morning to figure out why this is happening. One of the tests rotates the pictures 180 degrees. That is what you were seeing.

I kinda figured  you were testing something. Just busting. Is there a reason why it won't go higher? Maybe a little frozen still?

It is always fun to go back to the archives and look for cam shots of what we see in person.  I decided to get out of my warm car (16 degrees outside) and get a picture. Mr. T's back was to Carol and I, so I decided to take a picture of Beauty on the iBeam of OCSR first. When I moved my camera back to get a picture, he took off.  Figures! The best part was when I turned around, Carol was laughing. So many times these falcons do that to us.  This is my only pic of Mr T today.

A few tweets back, MAK mentioned that it is the male that selects the nestbox.  I don't think I was aware of that with the Pefas.  I think I knew that based on songbird activity I've seen...it seems Male Cardinals do that, but i did not know that about the falcons.  So if Archer returns, there will be a battle if Mr. T has also selected the site?  From your reports it seems Mr. T has come  a long way from the bird begging Beauty to share, to  "flights of fancy" with her.

Yes Margaret, Beauty and Mr. T have become more like a pair in the last few weeks. I witnessed Beauty bowing to him on OCSR last week. Hopefully Mr. T will move on before Archers' return but I really don't see that happening. We must remember that this is natures way.  ;D

So its March first. When exactly did Archer  :wub: come back last year? Since Mr T doesn't seem to be leaving... how long have we got before the  :o gulp fight  :hurt:

I wouldn't be surprised if he's on his way. Last year, he was LATE in March. Since he already had a relationship with Beauty, he may be back sooner. Who knows, I'm afraid when he does get here. Not much nest activity going on between the two now, I really don't see the bonding going on at the nest but that doesn't mean too much. What goes on out of our sights is a different concern. Kaver was usually around this time, 1st week of March and sometimes the end of Feb. Hopefully, the watchers will be out in full force this week keeping an eye on things.

That little guy better get a wiggle on...

I checked my notes over the weekend-the first couple of years Kaver was here he arrived later in March as well. 

I don't think there was male that hung out with Mariah this long. Sure she had Winter friends but they moved on. This fella seems to NOT want to leave. Would be pretty low down if Beauty ganged up on Mr T. after all these weeks, if Archer comes back. Strange ways, these falcons. Getting intense now.

Told ya - we better fasten our seat-belts! This is going to be some breeding season.

I noticed that Beauty does NOT always follow him to the nest. This morning, while they were there together, there was NO e-chupping. So either Beauty is NOT interested and making it clear or..don't know, just lost my train of thought!

I'm not making any predictions.  We're all still learning from what we're watching, which is the whole point of the cameras & watchers in the first place. 

Conventional wisdom says peregrines mate for life.  Mariah hung out with Whiney Tiny Guy & Tybropa Cree in a similar fashion to this while she was waiting for Kaver.  It wasn't until Archer showed up in late March that she tried mating.

Archer will be back if he is able.  We'll just have to wait until then to see how this plays out.

Donna don't bother looking for a white feather that boy hasn't got any jewelry

If Archer appears at the nest box and you don't see a white feather or his bling, the difference in his cap (malar stripe & auricular patch) from Mr. T's is very obvious. 

I have to say that Mr. T is one HANDSOME falcon!  His white chest stands out even at a distance (as we can see in MAK's photos).

Just a few minutes ago, I heard a crash at nest. Something was there, maybe in the well. Sounded like fighting. Not sure what it was but could not see on cam. Sounds like pigeon being attacked. May have been in the well but it was LOUD!! Then a few minutes later B and T showed up.

At some point, could you scan the well area....This is where I think the noise was coming from...can't be sure but it definitely in the cam area. After I heard the first crash, it was crazy after.

Ok, so I'm not sure what happened at the nest earlier but let me tell you, it didn't sound pretty. I sure wish I could see on the cams where it came from. It sounded right there. I'll never forget it and I'm still shaking.

No, unfortunately, I wasn't recording the streaming video at the time.

We had watchers on the street at the time. I'd like to know what they saw and heard.

MAK didn't get there until after 8, so she missed it. She did say B and T acting strange today. More vocalizing than usual. Right after that scuffle, whatever it was, B and T showed up at the nest. Of course, the one day I turn on LIVE stream early, I hear all this. I'm still not right over this. It was a horrible sound. To me it was right near the mic but not seen. At first, I thought one of the falcons chased a bird and it crash landed near the nest,the well area......then the fight started. Lots of flapping around, horrible noises, then it sounded like something flapped away...at this point, B and T were on Cam. I'm a big sissy when it comes to this and it's a sound I will probably never forget.

The Falcon I saw come off the KO Twr just before 7 a.m. was moving quick, heading SW, not directly towards the Times Square bldg.  Seemed to be after something, but I couldn't see anything.  The other day, I saw them kakking and diving on a RTH on the Kodak Bldg 10 and we know that there have been Coopers Hawks and Kestrels in the area.  So they may have gone after one that wandered too close to the TS Bldg. 

When I left work at 3:30 pm, two Pefas were on top of the TS Bldg sitting next to each other.  All was quiet.

He's not banded so no history to report, Kathleen.   He's been hanging around with Beauty for a while now.  The watchers just started calling him Mr. T...I think because it's easier to tweet than tiercel.  We're all hoping he's just a winter visitor and will move on before Archer gets back.

Question: I know, Donna, that you can answer this question in a nano-second, but can anyone refresh my fading memory as to when "Mr. T" first appeared on the scene?    Was it this fall, or early winter? 
He has changed, and matured so much in the ensuing months, that I'm wondering if he was a juvie when he first appeared, and if our Beauty has indeed been a "Mrs. Robinson"?

Thanks, MAK! How did you beat Donna in answering my question?   Since you 've been on the spot and seen more than many  of us, do you think Mr. T. has matured, and grown, in the past few months he's been in town?    And, has our Beauty been teaching him the "ropes"?  Just from reading the posts, that's that I'm gathering.  Do you see them as a nesting couple?   I am seeing that just from the  few pictures I've seen from the camera, and from the reports.     What do all of you watchers forecast?   I do want Archer to return, but nature is nature, and our Beauty and Mr. T. are  "compatible" ...as they say.  That said...I am still hoping for Mariah and Kaver.....

I have noticed a change in Mr. T since he first came on the scene. At first he seemed like a kid always begging for food from Beauty. Then he started hunting with her and now he seems to be showing mating tendencies. I believe he has learned from Beauty but nobody has witnessed copulation between them or scraping in the nestbox although they have been bowing at each other. I still feel Beauty just enjoys his company but is waiting for Archer to return. Just my un-professional opinion. And, I have no idea how I beat Donna to the punch!  ;D

I could answer the first part of the question but MAK has seen him more than most with her morning observations and in the beginning he was the whiney guy looking for a handout...he's grown into a young man, (still looks for handouts) but pretty much fends for himself. It will all be over soon when Beauty decides she is ready, Archer or not!

I thought wet spot after I posted that although, the way he's acting, I wouldn't be too surprised to see that activity start in the near future. If Archer's coming back, he better start flapping faster!

I think it is just dampness in the next box, but the behavior is certainly "courtship".  Wasn't Archer back by this time last year?

Archer has another week to go...but if I were him, I'd make it snappy. Wonder why he's so late? Maybe he has the "RUN" gene in him too, although he did not have a failed nest last year. Strange, what we learn from them.

It looks like a wet spot from the leaky roof to me,not a scrape. I still think Beauty is waiting for Archer and I have a gut feeling he is getting close.  ;D

Archer has always been on a later schedule than we are used to with Kaver. We have no idea where he migrates to. Maybe he is one that goes all the way to South America. I just hope he is safe and on his way home. What I worry about is that he is at a disadvantage if he has to take on Mr. T. He will be tired from migrating.

This is an especially critical time.  The Watchers will be watching for Archer's return.  We're really hoping that there won't be a territorial battle between the two Tiercels, but we are aware of this possibility.  We'll be Watching!

Yes and we are grateful  those of us who can't be there ourselves. I just hope if worse comes to worse that someone will be there at the right time and right place like you were for Mariah. I like Mr T and don't want him hurt he just needs to fly up to Charlotte or visit Lady P if her man doesn't come back. (or take one of Jack's ladies he's being a hog with two nest sites.)

You weren't posting in the wrong place if your intent was to notify others that falcons were at the nest box. Yes, you shouldn't have attempted to post a picture there, but it didn't hurt anything.

I'm so happy to hear that Archer is home but I do hope Mr T is okay too - he's a handsome tiercel and he kept Beauty company for quite awhile.  Send him over to Toronto - my Angel could use her own man and he seems loyal unlike a certain two timing tiercel who shall remain nameless  :rolleyes:  :laugh:

I'm guessing it was Archer and Beauty that Carol saw on KO.  I have a sneaky suspicion the Pefa Larry saw this morning at PC was Archer.

I agree with you that THAT is some INTENSE bowing.  We can learn so much from watching .  I too, am shaking and tearing up to see this picture of Archer and Beauty.  The bond is there!   I also wonder about Mr. T.  Has anyone seen him?    You know...yesterday, Beauty was on the nest for so long, I think  I posted that she sensed Archer was on his way.  He was!  This afternoon Beauty was on the nest box for a long time...leaving at 1:30 or so.   And now, per this pic,  Archer was there in less than half an hour.  I wonder where he was.

I am so happy he is back.  It's a connection to Mariah and Kaver that is important.  I was worried, to be honest, that Beauty took up with Mr. T because something might have happened to Archer.  So glad that was not the case!

You know, I can't honestly say I was worried about Archer.  And I knew if he didn't come back nesting would go on just fine with Mr. T (Archer was rather inexperienced his first year here too).  I guess it's the connection to Mariah & Kaver that made me REALLY want him to come back safely.  

You, excited?  NAH!  No worries-I was just as excited as you! 

I am very sure that it was Archer and Beauty that I saw on the Kodak Tower.  I believe that Archer was eating up on the launchpad while Beauty was lookin on.  If you'll notice, I didn't ID either Pefa in that report, because I did not believe it was Mr. T, but I couldn't be 100% sure.  I tried to follow them, but most of my routes were blocked because of the St. Patricks Day Parade.  It was driving me nuts, not  being able to get downtown.  So glad that Archer made it home.

Some of the Watchers plan to get out early tomorrow to keep an eye out for Mr T.  Hope he moves just a little north and finds Lady Pefa.

I remember noticing that you did not ID either falcon and went, "hmm."

Even though we had gray skies, it was so exciting to watch Archer and Beauty flying together.  You could just see how happy they were resuming their courtship. They were both flying around TS and I thought if the "Watcher's Watcher" was at work in his office he would have known it was A+B (that has a nice ring).

How can the Watchers tell the difference(s) between the various PeFas? Esp in the sky!? Or high on a building? I would love to know.

I would also like to think that Mr T will find true love... he has been a most welcome part of our winter watching, and I for one wish him well. Sweet little guy... would Beauty have been lonely without him? Or is this me (and others) being anthropor-thingie...?

 :wave:   If they are in the air you can sometimes go by size otherwise you can't really tell unless you knew who it was before they were airborn. I look at the moustache,chest color and how dark the head is. The white on Archers moustache goes higher than on Beauty and his is whiter while hers is more salmon colored like her chest. And there's always that white feather on his right wing to look for on him.I feel Archer has a certain look when he turns on the speed for a stoop that is uniquely his. I have had the privilege of witnessing a few of them already. On buildings you look for bumps on rooftops,then you try to get closer or better angles(driving or walking)for identifying them. Check for bands on their legs if they let you. You can also ID them by their own favorite spot on buildings. For instance,Beauty likes Mercurys money bag hand and the 5th column on Xerox as well as on top of the main camera. Archer likes the Frontier Communications tower and the base of Mercury. Of course lots of practice helps ALOT! ;D
 I very much enjoyed Mr. T.  I feel he left without incident and I thank him for all the time spent in our fair city.  :foxbinocs:

YAY!  At least there will be young again this spring.  So happy.  As I commented in MAK's blog of this morning, perhaps when naming the young, the name "Mercury" should be considered in honor of "their place".  Not to jump the gun, but does it mean eggs around April 10, and if that 's the case, fledging might be when?  You experts can probably estimate that.   Will this be a little earlier than last year?

The part I'm enjoying is seeing the difference between Mr. T's earnest but immature attempts at courtship.  And Beauty's lukewarm response-but not chasing him just in case. 

Then...THERE"S ARCHER!!!  Headstand bowing...treats at the nest...near constant ee-chupping... dancing in the air...even just watching the still cameras you can feel the excitement!

I agree Ei.  Archer has definitely matured compared to last year.  I suspect that this was Mr. T’s first attempt at wooing a female.  He was polite, that’s for sure!  That’s why I feel so confident that he was just chased away when Archer reappeared.  Beauty’s entire demeanor changed when Archer came back.

I agree, Joyce, Archer is doing his best to impress Miss Beauty.  The pair-bond seems to be quite strong, and makes me realize how our Miss Beauty  was just "keeping company" with Mr. T, but the bond was not there.  I love watching the presents that Archer is bringing in, and I think that he will be a much better "provider" to their off-spring this year.  Beauty won't have to work as hard as she did last year.  Just read "birdcrazy's" post, and I agree.   Beauty's demeanor certainly did change when Archer appeared.  This has been an education!

unless my memory is faulty. I believe Archer did bring plenty of food for the little ones. He just did very little feeding of it to them himself. He left that job to Beauty or maybe she "made" him leave that to her. She is a good Mama. lol he did look lost when he had to face the kids on his own. He was fine when they were just eggs.  :laugh:

I don't know..my recollection of last year was that Beauty did a  good deal of the hunting and bringing in the prey for the young.  Archer did have that "deer in the headlights" look when dealing with the offspring, and I think his maturity will kick in this year.  It will be a good year to watch. 

Archer never liked getting mobbed, especially by Callidora. He just dropped off the meals!

Obviously it's too late to put a nest up at KP. I was hoping for one this Winter, knowing LP was still there and would probably attract a mate. I hope, if possible, she finds a good spot with some sort of protection, to keep  them stable. Will the DEC step in when and if she has eggs? Has there been no word on a positive ID. Has the DEC contacted any one about this? Just wondering why this is taking so long when they knew about it a year ago. I just feel bad for her. It's been done before, a falcon has eggs on a structure with no bedding, so to speak and the chicks have survived. Maybe this will be the case here too. I hope what ever happens, all goes well with her.

You are good!  I wasn't sure who it was.  Looked kind of smaller, but I guessed Beauty.  But it is Archer. 
What does all of this mean?  How imminent are the eggs?

I wasn't sure at first, so I checked all the cams & there was the white feather!

I don't think we're quite ready for eggs yet.  Their activity in & around the nestbox is increasing so they are progressing.  When Beauty spends a LOT of time in the nestbox just sitting & staring it will be time for egg watch. Disclaimer-you can never be absolutely sure what a peregrine is up to-but those are the typical signs.

Now, that is one nasty old morning in ROC! Poor A&B! Y'all drive carefully... not forgetting the NJ watchers who have already been hit!

Main cam is stuck

there are a bunch of wires hanging under there its probably light reflecting off them, why they move I don't know. wind?

LOL, I really didn't think they were eyes. Just looked like it.  :wave: Maybe reflection from Cam 1.

I believe it's reflected Moonlight. It moves because the Moon is moving.

OK, cool, makes it more the better!
