Name a 2017 Eyas

Friday, May 12th, 2017

Once again we are requesting suggestions for a name for one of Beauty and Dot.ca’s Eyases!

20160510-071800

We are very happy to announce that once again falcon fans will have an opportunity to choose a name for an eyas in the nest box atop the Times Square Building, and it will be in the form of a naming contest open to all viewers.

Much care and thought was used to name past eyases. We’ve included the criteria we’ve always used when choosing a name. Please read the rules very carefully and use the link below to submit either:

one (1) male and one (1) female name

-or-

one (1) gender neutral name.

Please, only one submission per person!

The deadline for name submissions is 11:59 pm (EDT) on Wednesday, May 17, 2017.

Suggested Rfalconcam Naming Criteria Acceptable Categories for Names:

Explorers, Astronomers, Conservationists, especially those with
International appeal (e.g., Galileo, Amelia [Earhart], Magellan), or those who have played a significant role in Peregrine re-population efforts.
Names inspired by Nature–topographic, meteorological, geographic, etc. (e.g. Mariah, Kaver, Isaura, Fulmine, Alkyonis, Skye, Aconcagua)
Inspirational Names (e.g. Freedom, Hope, Destiny)
Mythological Beings (e.g. Isis, Thor, Zeus, Ananta)
Words that refer to falcons in languages other than Modern English (e.g. Thlotli, Hafoc)

Categories that do not fit the criteria:

Names derived from religious, political, or popular culture icons.
Names directly related to a human person either living or dead, except as noted in the acceptable criteria above.
Names related to a commercial product, or a copyrighted or trademarked name owned by any corporation, individual or organization.
Names that reflect negatively on any group, organization, individual or entity.
Names should be well researched whenever possible. Supporting rationale for the name is required, so give us a few sentences that explain the name and the reason you chose it.

Submitting a Name:

That’s easy! Just click on this link to open the submission form. Only one submission per person please! If multiple submissions are sent in, only the first one will be accepted.

NOTE: IF SUBMITTING A NAME, PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS IT HERE, ON THE FORUM, OR ON SOCIAL MEDIA. WE WOULD LIKE TO MAKE THIS AS FAIR AS POSSIBLE TO ALL PARTICIPANTS.

Judging the Name Submissions:

The Rfalconcam Naming Committee will evaluate all name submissions for appropriateness, including (but not limited to) adherence to the naming criteria, well researched name, uniqueness of the name and how well it follows the “spirit” of past falcon names.

The committee will select the top five male, female and gender neutral names from those submitted and create a poll for members of the Rfalconcam forum to vote for their favorite in each category. You must be a member of the forum to be able to vote for a name. Join the forum now if you’d like to participate!

Two More Hatches While we Were Sleeping! 5/2/17

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2017

While everyone was sleeping……two more eyases hatched overnight!

We didn’t get a good look until early this morning when Dot.ca brought in food to feed his young.  Beauty took the prey and left the nest box to prepare his offering.  She returned a few moments later and fed them from the left side, while Dot.ca watched intently from the right side.  He was able to take a small piece of food from Beauty to feed one of the small, white eyases.  In the beginning, Beauty will control the amount of food given to her young.  Dot.ca will do the majority of the hunting.

First Hatch on a Stormy Night for Rochester Falcons Beauty and Dot.ca! – 5/1/17

Monday, May 1st, 2017

As the storms passed through Rochester, NY this evening, a small eyas (baby falcon) was hard at work. Beauty and Dot.ca were taking turns incubating and protecting their four eggs from the torrential rain and wind. Soon after it stopped raining, a young falcon arrived, breaking out of its egg at about 8:10 pm.

Here you can see part of the egg shell in front of Beauty.

We got a quick glimpse of all four eggs as Dot.ca left the nest box and Beauty took over. Two other eggs have pips (small holes) in them. So we’ll have more hatches soon!

Rochester Falcons Beauty and Dot.ca’s 4th Egg Arrived Early this morning at 7:56 am! As one falcon fan said “Four on the Floor!”. Or more technically “Four in the Scrape!”. 🙂

Beauty has laid no more than four eggs since she’s been here in Rochester. Will there be a fifth? If there is a fifth egg, it should arrive late afternoon on Monday. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Fly Free Genesee

Fly Free Genesee Dana 1-7-17

It is with a very heavy heart and much sadness that we have to report the passing of our young tiercel, Genesee.

The Rochester Falcon Watchers have been watching him since his return to the Rochester area last year. He was mostly seen in the Charlotte/Summerville area, but there were reports from birders seeing him along the lake shore hunting as far east as Sodus. We were all very happy to recently learn that Genesee had found a mate.

Yesterday, 1/7/17, Rochester Falcon Watchers Dana Mulhern and Carol Phillips were out checking the lakeshore, hoping to find Genesee and his mate. When driving over the Irondequoit Bay Bridge they spotted a falcon down on the road. They contacted the DEC and Officer Snowden retrieved the falcon. He kindly let us know that it was in fact Genesee and it looked like he had been hit by a car. There was a dead Merganser nearby and he thought that may have been what caused Genesee to come down to the roadway.

Genesee made it thorough that very hard first year which a large majority of young falcons do not survive. He found a mate and we had high hopes that, with her, he would raise young of his own.

Fly Free Genesee. We will miss you.

2016 Was a Very Successful Year for Our Rochester Falcons!

Friday, January 6th, 2017

2016 was a very successful year for our Rochester Falcons. Beginning with Beauty and Dot.ca successfully raising four young eyases to four successful fledges. We can’t forget our other pair, Billie and Seth, who also successfully raised young this year. It was a very good year!

Matilda, Aria, Lilac and Leo have all left Rochester to start their life journeys. We hope they all do well and that we hear about them in the future with mates and young of their own. That is the best news Rochester Falcon Watchers love to hear.

Speaking of that, as you all know, we have been recently reporting that Genesee, hatched in the nest box on top of the Times Square Bldg in 2015, was seen hanging out in the Charlotte/Summerville area. Watchers had reported seeing a female in the area a couple times while Genesee was there.

For the last few weeks, we had not seen Genesee or any other Peregrine Falcons. But, we are VERY happy to report that on January 1, 2017, a local birder, reported seeing two falcons on the Coast Guard Tower on the Summerville side of the Genesee River near Lake Ontario. Falcon fan Kris Genagon, who named Genesee along with another fan, contacted me to let me know that she had found a picture of the two falcons on the Coast Guard Tower! I tracked down the photographer who kindly gave me permission to post his wonderful picture on our website to share with all our fans. The bands on the smaller falcon were definitely those of our Genesee and he wasn’t alone. Genesee has a mate!

Here is the picture that photographer Richard Horsey shared with us.

Genesee and Female on CGT by Richard Horsey A 1-1-17

Sorry to say we are unable to ID this gorgeous girl hanging out with Genesee. But Richard was able to see that she was banded and had red tape over her USFW band and a black/green NYS band. Hopefully someday we’ll be able to positively identify her.

Many thanks to Richard for sharing his picture with us! It is so nice to see that Genesee and his mate are doing well. We hope to see them raising young of their own someday!

Thank you all for helping to support the Rochester Falconcam! We all hope that 2017 will be a successful year for our Rochester Falcons!
