It was Banding Day for our Rochester Falcons today. Our friends from the DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) arrived this morning around 10:00 am. On hand, to help out, were RFalconcam members June, Shaky and Carol P. Also helping out to moderate the forum and live streaming video feed were Donna and Eileen. The Rochester Falcon Watchers arrived to watch from the front of the Times Square Bldg.

It took about an hour to retrieve the four eyases, band them and return them to the nest box. All under the watchful eye and swooping by both parents, Beauty and Dot.ca. The DEC Technicians checked the eyases to make sure they were all healthy. All of them had full crops.

Here are some Banding Day pictures.

We are very happy to announce that once again falcon fans will have an opportunity to choose a name for an eyas in the nest box atop the Times Square Building, and it will be in the form of a naming contest open to all viewers.

one (1) gender neutral name.

Two More Hatches While we Were Sleeping! 5/2/17

May 2nd, 2017

While everyone was sleeping……two more eyases hatched overnight!

We didn’t get a good look until early this morning when Dot.ca brought in food to feed his young.  Beauty took the prey and left the nest box to prepare his offering.  She returned a few moments later and fed them from the left side, while Dot.ca watched intently from the right side.  He was able to take a small piece of food from Beauty to feed one of the small, white eyases.  In the beginning, Beauty will control the amount of food given to her young.  Dot.ca will do the majority of the hunting.

First Hatch on a Stormy Night for Rochester Falcons Beauty and Dot.ca! – 5/1/17

May 1st, 2017

As the storms passed through Rochester, NY this evening, a small eyas (baby falcon) was hard at work. Beauty and Dot.ca were taking turns incubating and protecting their four eggs from the torrential rain and wind. Soon after it stopped raining, a young falcon arrived, breaking out of its egg at about 8:10 pm.

Here you can see part of the egg shell in front of Beauty.

We got a quick glimpse of all four eggs as Dot.ca left the nest box and Beauty took over. Two other eggs have pips (small holes) in them. So we’ll have more hatches soon!

Rochester Falcons Beauty and Dot.ca’s 4th Egg Arrived Early this morning at 7:56 am! As one falcon fan said “Four on the Floor!”. Or more technically “Four in the Scrape!”. 🙂

Beauty has laid no more than four eggs since she’s been here in Rochester. Will there be a fifth? If there is a fifth egg, it should arrive late afternoon on Monday. We’ll just have to wait and see.
