Offspring Update: Ihteram Found Again!

May 21st, 2013

Good News! Ihteram, daughter of Mariah and Kaver from 2005, has been found again after an absence of five years.

Here is a link to the April 14, 2008 Imprints posted when Ihteram was found nesting at historic St. Joseph Catholic Church in Detroit, Michigan with her mate, an unbanded tiercel (male).

There was very little news posted about Ihteram and her mate, so we lost track of them.

Now, we are very happy to report that five years later, Ihteram has again been positively identified.

Rochester Falcon Watcher Joyce Miller had been corresponding with Barb Baldinger of the Macomb Audubon in Michigan. She is a volunteer who helps monitor the Peregrine Falcon nest sites in Michigan. Barb told Joyce that there was a new nest site in Detroit and the female was banded, *2/R (black/red). Joyce immediately recognized the band numbers as one of our own, Ihteram. She notified Barb with the good news.

Ihteram and her mate have established a new nest site in downtown Detroit (MI) on the roof of a skyscraper. The nest has 4 eggs in a partially protected corner. If all goes well, there will be some new additions to the Rochester falcon family.

Many thanks to Joyce and Barb for sharing this wonderful news! Stay tuned. Hopefully there will be more news to share soon.

Here is a picture of Ihteram that Barb took yesterday (May 20, 2013). She attempted to get a picture of the tiercel, but he took off before she could take it.

Dot.ca, the tiercel (male), brought food to Beauty this afternoon and took his turn on the eggs.

Peregrines won’t begin incubating the eggs, or brooding, right away. Believe it or not, that’s perfectly normal for Peregrines. She’ll begin brooding when the next to last egg is laid, so when she starts, we can be pretty sure we know how many eggs she’ll lay– just add one to the current number. Before then, she’ll mostly leave the eggs uncovered. Don’t worry though– Peregrine eggs can survive just fine unless the temperature drops below freezing. If that happens, she’ll sit on the eggs just to keep them warm enough to stay viable.

Beauty and Dot.ca began brooding after the 3rd egg was laid, so chances are, this will be the last egg this year.

Spring is Almost Upon Us……….

March 14th, 2013

Spring is almost upon us and I would like to wish you all an enjoyable peregrine breeding season. In the past few years funding and personnel cuts have been made at the DEC, due to budget cuts. Hence, the DEC will not have as much time in the future to find injured and dead falcons as they have in the past.

GVAS volunteers are only allowed to search, rescue and recover injured or dead peregrines only on the ground. We then work with the DEC to get the peregrine to a veterinarian or rehabilitator. We will have to give them all the time they need to get the task completed.

Please remember we will do our best to take care of situations when they arise but, these are wild animals that naturally have conflicts with territorial intruders. Sometimes these conflicts end in injury or death. Please try to remain calm during these times or remove yourself from the situation for the day. Emotional responses from a few people make these events even more unpleasant for the rest of us. Let us observe and help each other learn the life cycle and behavior of peregrine falcons.

Thank you.

ROC the Day in 2 Hours

December 11th, 2012

ROC the Day is only a a few hours away!

As previously mentioned, Rochester Area Community Foundation will be checking every two hours to see what registered organization has the most ROCstar donors during that time period. The organization with the most unique donors during each two-hour period will get an extra $1000 bonus. We are going to try to get that bonus during the first two hours. So stay up for a few more hours or set your alarm clock for midnight and then make a donation. It doesn’t have to be a big one. In fact, a small one might be better. You may want to make another donation later tomorrow if we have to make a second attempt at the $1000 bonus, which is tentatively planned for the two-hour period between 10 am and noon.

Stay tuned throughout the day tomorrow. You can get the latest news on our ROC the Day plans at our Forum or on our Facebook page. You can also follow us on Twitter.

By the way, the link to donate is http://www.roctheday.org/rfalconcam.
