Dave & I met Jon & Joni as they were leaving. They told us what they had seen and who was still watching out on the bridge. We found Carol P,Marcia, Don & Suzette from Ithaca, Craig & Joyce from Webster,Mary,Joshua,Chris,Sue and Mike. Hope I didn’t leave anyone out. 3 Juvies were in a tree resting and 1 was on the Brewery. We all enjoyed looking at them thru Marcia’s handy scope.

We arrived @ 9 with our binoculars & cameras ready. Several watchers were already either by the parking lot below Kodak or on the bridge (most on the bridge) We learned that Mariah was thought to be on the High Falls tower with some food. On the bridge we saw Jim P. and other watchers. We discovered that a fledgling was on the Brewery building, one on the Bee Bee Station, 2 in the shady trees by the gorge and Kaver was in a crevice on the gorge wall below the east observation deck. It was quiet at first and then between 9:30 and 10:45, there was much flying and playing in the gorge area. Several time, there were low fly-overs over the bridge (and our heads) which was quite exciting. It seemed at one point Mariah was teaching one of the girls how to soar and use the wind currents to stay in the air. The fledging eventually trusted what her mother was teaching her and began to soar as well (lots of effort to flap all of the time!!)

Grace Visits and Proud Mariah
I had a nice visit this morning from Grace, who landed on Pride’s rock while I was on the observation deck. Mariah was close by, sitting on the edge of the gorge offering me another rare photo opp. These are some pictures from this morning’s watch.

There was plenty of flying, plus several opportunities for close-up looks at the fledglings this morning. I’ve added an update to my blog with pictures and narrative, which I hope you’ll enjoy.

Ananta Flies the Friendly Skies
This morning, we were treated to some nice flying by our juvies. This album features mostly Ananta flying the gorge, buzzing seagulls, landing on the hook branch, and being visited by a goldfinch. At the end of the album, there’s a few pix of Kaver chasing of a redtail hawk to keep the skies over her territory safe for the juvies.

This morning our “official watch” started at 8:00 and when we got there things were all around pretty quiet. All the falcons were accounted for except one juvie (which we later spotted) and even Mariah was asleep. Meanwhile we spotted a groundhog, deer, and wild turkey.
At one point all three of the juvies that we could see took off and Kaver followed to make sure of what they were off to do. Kaver then returned with all four of the juvies behind him, Grace showing off her above average flying ability. They then paired up and showed off some of their new flying skills with some in the air tag and playful flying. After this littlle air show the juvies split back up again and came to rest on their separate places. After all this excitement with the juvies and Kaver, Mariah finally woke up, preened for a little, and then went back to sleep, obviously not too thrilled with the juvie’s fun.

Dana and I stopped out to do a little falcon watching this evening. I only took only a handful of shots tonight, but did manage to get some falcon action. There’s also some other pics of a couple of events happening in the area this weekend in this album…

We hope everyone is enjoying reading the exciting dispatches from our on-scene fledge watchers! When you’re reviewing the latest reports, take some time to look through the list of recent entries. Some reports are submitted several hours or even a day after the watcher’s shift has taken place. We publish them in reverse chronological order based on the time and date of the Fledge Watch, so the most recently received reports may not appear at the top of the list. Don’t miss out on the action– take a moment to review the entries further down the list!
We’ll be introducing a new feature very soon. Every couple of days we’ll be showcase an exclusive picture or video clip on the Rochester Falconcam’s home page. You’ll be able to download high-resolution images and watch video clips recorded by our Fledge Watchers as Ananta, Linn, Sacajawea and Grace continue to hone their flying and hunting skills. We’ll store all the images and clips on our Imprints Gallery, where you’ll be able to post your thoughts. Look for the first gallery feature soon!

When I arrived, Paul, Dan S, Jeanne, Carol P and Jim P were already gathered at the corner of Platt and Mill St. It was not ” a dark and stormy night”, since it was a cool morning with bright, blue skies over the “Flour”/”Flower” city, as Rochester is sometimes known. They brought me up to speed which essentially meant a rather slow morning with some talon tag among the girls. Dan had earlier sighted all four juvies, so it was “All Quiet on the Western Front”.
