Thursday Late Afternoon/Early Evening Falcon Watch – 3rd Adult Peregrine Falcon Seen Downtown – 9/19/13

Thursday, September 19th, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

Another beautiful late Summer day with temps in the 70’s, blue sky and sunshine.  It doesn’t get much better than that.

I started my watch at the Hawkeye plant at 4:00 pm.  When I arrived, a big Red-tailed Hawk was on the west side of the building, near where I’ve seen the juvie eating.  There was also a Turkey Vulture floating above.  I’ve seen her cache food in that area, so I’m sure it might be the reason there was so much interest by the RTH and TV.  The RTH flew over to the SW corner of the building below the security camera, just as I saw a falcon fly over the building heading south.  The hawk was not bothered by the falcon’s passing by and I never saw the falcon again while I was at the Hawkeye location.  It was a quick fly by, so no way to tell if  it was a juvie or adult.  After awhile, the RTH also took off, also heading south.

Because it was such a nice afternoon, I decided to head over the the High Falls pedestrian bridge, which is south of Hawkeye.  The falls was running nicely and the “regulars” were in attendance; a couple of Great Blue Herons, a few Cormorants, some Canada Geese and lots of Mallards.  No falcons or osprey were there.  From the pedestrian bridge, I could see a falcon on the Frontier Communication Tower (FCT) below the platform and above the boxes.  After parking in the City Hall parking lot, I finally was able to ID this bird as Dot.ca.

Beauty was on Kodak Office Tower (KO).  She was on the SE corner of the launch pad.

Beauty took off and headed towards me or to be more exact, toward the Frontier Communication Tower.  Dot.ca was ee-chupping and so was Beauty.  It didn’t take long for me to see why they were bothered.  There was a mystery 3rd adult Peregrine Falcon flying high above.  Soaring and circling the area.  This bird was very high, making it hard to get a flight shot.  I did get a few that I had to enlarge and crop.  Here are the results, so you too can see the 3rd falcon that followed Beauty back to FCT.  Neither Beauty or Dot.ca left the FCT while the 3rd falcon was flying above.

Almost this same thing happened a week or so ago when I was watching Beauty and Dot.ca from the City Hall parking lot.  The mystery falcon circled higher and higher until it drifted off to the NE.

Joyce joined me and let me know that Beauty had landed on the FCT top arm.

We never did see the 3rd falcon again.  Dot.ca did take off and fly north towards the Kodak Tower.  He landed on the NW corner of the launchpad.

We joined him for a few moments, noticing that he continually looked north.  Hmmm.  What could he be watching?  This was the direction the 3rd falcon came from.  Joyce and I drove over to Hawkeye plant.  Sorry to say, we did not find a falcon there.

I remained there until 7:30 pm, hoping a falcon would return to the building.  One never did.  Joyce stopped to check out the BS location on her way home.  This was her lst tweet at 7:47 pm –  While I was watching the big orange moon rise, Pigott came in and is  perched on the NW corner. Saw all three pefa residents today. 🙂

Pigott made three, plus the appearance of the mystery falcon, make 4 Peregrines seen tonight.

On my way home, I stopped to take this picture of the gorgeous Harvest Moon.  Goodnight everyone!

What a difference 10 degrees makes-this morning it was 53  (F) 12 (C) compared to yesterday at 43 (F) as I walked out the door for my watch. More blue skies and sunshine too! Saw the big harvest moon enroute to downtown.

img_0002-harvest-moon

Arriving downtown at 6:35am I went to work looking for Beauty, checking the Frontier Communications Tower (FCT) first and making my way over to the east side of the city and back thru spotting her on the OCSR from the Broad St. Bridge just before the 7 o’clock hour. Strangely, she was on the top ibeam north corner which is a favorite spot of Dot.Ca. (DC). I drove over to Bragdon St. by the Radisson Hotel to check it out.

img_0009-beauty1 img_0013-beauty2 img_0014-beauty1 img_0017-beautyful

Notice how each pic got brighter as the sun rose in the eastern sky. I hung out with the Beautyful one for about 15 minutes then I went to check Hawkeye. After striking out there I returned to downtown and found Beauty on the northeast cube of FCT around 7:30am. I parked on Fitzhugh St. in front of the Sister Cities parking garage for the best view.

img_0033-beauty img_0037-cutie

She was doing some serious preening when I left her to go to the Brighton Site (BS) at 8:15am. I found Miss Pigott on the east extension on the north (front) side of the building top window in the corner. This is her night time roosting spot and I thought it quite odd that she was there at that time of the morning but hey, as predictable as they can be, Peregrines can also be quite unpredictable. Guess it depends on whether they feel like messing with us watchers! lol

img_0043-pigott

Unfortunately, she had her back to me the whole time I observed her. There was a bird in the tree below her that she was very interested in as she kept looking down probably trying to decide if she could flush it out for a meal.

img_0050-pigott img_0055-i-see-you-little-birdie

I was in a rush this morning having a busy schedule for the day so I left Pigott to her hunting and returned downtown. I found Beauty still on the FCT cube so I continued on to check Hawkeye one more time. Nothing there so I ended my watch at 9:15am. It seems that the girls are really intent on looking for DC to show up and hang out with them these days-perhaps they sense that he will be leaving on migration soon. Anyway, seeing Beauty and Pigott was enough to make me smile! 🙂

Wednesday Evening Falcon Watch – An Evening Hunter is Hunted – 9/18/13

Wednesday, September 18th, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

Another gorgeous day with temps in the 70’s, bright sunshine and blue skies.  I arrived at the Hawkeye plant at 6:30 pm.  On my way Joyce had tweeted that she did not see Pigott at BS and shortly after Kathy O tweeted that she found Pigott on the cubby ledge on the west side of the building.  It just goes to show you that it’s all about timing.  lol

I drove around the Hawkeye plant and could not find any falcons there.  It was time to head downtown.

From the Broad St Bridge (BSB), I found Dot.ca on the south side of OCSR on the top IBeam at the south corner.  (7:02 pm)

Dot.cat took off while I wasn’t looking, so I did not know where he headed.  I drove over to the Xerox Tower and found Beauty on the south side, on the 5th column in from the SE corner. (7:12 pm)

Kathy texted that she was on the Broad St Bridge and Joyce was over at Hawkeye, having no luck finding the juvie.  I decided to head over to the BSB.  Kathy spotted a bird on top of the OCSR elevator shaft.  After checking it out closer, we both determined that it was in fact a Peregrine.  It was starting to get dark so it was impossible to ID this falcon.  The last falcon I saw on top of the elevator shaft, was a juvie.  (7:28 pm)

Kathy and I were just getting ready to leave when we noticed that the falcon was gone.  It was really dark by this time and we were just able to see the falcon flying on the right side of OCSR.  It then flew towards us, fast and low over the river.  It was really hard to follow the falcon as it flew almost directly in front of us.  We saw the reason why as the falcon approached, chasing a large bird that crashed into the river with a large splash and a horrible scream.  The falcon pulled up and continued over the river heading west towards the Broad St Bridge. (7:42 pm)

We lost track of the Peregrine because our attention was on the bird that crash landed into the river in the dark.  It ended up on a pile of wood just below us.  Finally we were able to see that it wasn’t a duck, like we first thought.  It was the adult Black-crowned Night Heron.  The night hunter had been hunted and was extremely lucky to have escaped.  She didn’t seem injured at all, just had her feathers ruffled and dunked in river water.

We looked for the Peregrine, but couldn’t find it.  It was time to end our Watch. (7:50 pm)

I’ll leave you with a few pictures I took during my Watch tonight.  Be sure to click on any you would like to see larger.  Sorry to say it was way too dark to get a picture of the BCNH.  Good night everyone!

At 43 degrees (F) 6 (C) there was a bit of a chill in the air as I started my watch at  6:35am. There were virtually no clouds in the sky as the sun shone brightly when it arose from its slumbers!

As I checked the Frontier Communications Tower (FCT) first right off the 490 ramp I saw no falcons. I continued on checking the downtown area and ended up spotting Beauty on the northeast cube of the FCT from the Andrews St. bridge. I drove over and parked on Fitzhugh St. in front of the Sister Cities parking garage for the best view.

img_0006-beauty1 img_0016-beauty

I left her after 10 minutes to check on the Hawkeye site but there were no juvies to be seen so I returned to FCT and Beauty who was in the same spot.I spent over half hour with her as she mainly looked around her surroundings (and for DC too I think),poop, stretch and just look Beautyful.

img_0021-beauty-looks-compacted img_0026-oh-my-look-at-that-streamer img_0027-balancing-act img_0043-foofer

She also made a lot of gestures with her BYFs (big yellow feet) which are always fun to see and one goofy looking pose!

img_0051-falcon-power img_0054-beauty-gives-a-shout-out img_0058-wait-a-sec img_0061-whats-this-pose-called

I departed around 8:30am to have a look/see over at the Brighton Site (BS) and came across Pigott and her better half Dot.Ca (DC) on the south side vent. She was on the west (left) side and he on the east (right) side looking very bright white with the sun on them and both had full crops.

img_0072-pdc<Click it and 2 PEFAs will appear Pigott>img_0077-pigott-looking-at-dcDC>img_0081-ugh-shes-whining-again

DC had a lot of  BYF gestures as well and Pigott mainly looked at DC and whined while he turned away from her when she did. lol

One of the starlings from the roof flew down and got awful close to DC and slammed on the brakes in mid air!

A few minutes later Pigott shot off the vent like a torpedo and flew to a west facing top window on the southeast extension where it meets the main building and started to whine in earnest. DC couldn’t take it anymore and a few minutes later flew over and joined Pigott and they had a chup fest for less than a minute. Echup, echup, echup!

img_0114-its-a-pigott-torpedo img_0116-im-comin<DC-I’ll be right over img_0126-ok-honey-here-i-am-echup

DC flew off while I was taping- I didn’t follow him and thought he left as I kept the recording going and fixed on Pigott. She watched him fly back and land on the window directly below her. The little sneak!

This is how I left them after spending a solid hour at BS. I returned downtown and found Beauty on the northeast side  top ibeam of OCSR from the Andrews St. Bridge.

img_0138-beauty

I shot over to Hawkeye for one more try but no falcons of any kind were seen so I ended my watch at 10am. All 3 resident adult Peregrine Falcons were seen and doing well on my watch sending me on my way with a smile on my face! 🙂

Tuesday Evening Falcon Watch – Pigott and Beauty Seen – 9/17/13

Tuesday, September 17th, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

A much nicer day than yesterday’s dreariness.  Sunshine and blue sky!

I didn’t get started on my Watch until 5:30 pm.  My first stop was the Hawkeye plant.  After checking all sides of the building, I could not find any falcons there.  Kathy O tweeted that she had Pigott out at the BS location, so that’s where I went next.

Kathy was gone, but I did find Pigott on the SW corner of the SE extension.  (6:18 pm)

After reading that Pigott had a young tiercel visiting her this morning, I wanted to see if he was still hanging around.  He wasn’t.  It was very quiet there.

Pigott was hyper aware of her surroundings, as she always is.  She took off and flew around the east end of the building.  The next time I saw her, she was hovering over the top of the building.  I lost sight of her as she passed over the top.  But, the Starlings that nested up there told me she was still up there.  They were very agitated.

I drove around the to front (north side) of the building and found Pigott on an antenna on the roof.  She was watching the activity of the Starlings below her.  As I watched, she spread her wings and dove down to the roof of the building, where I again lost sight of her.

When I finally got back around to the south side of the building, I found Pigott with prey on the SE end of the building.  Feathers were flying.  I can only assume that she probably caught one of the Starlings from the top of the building, even though I did not see her catch it.

I left Pigott to enjoy her meal, heading downtown to look for Beauty and Dot.ca before it got dark.  Beauty was on top of the Xerox tower on the south side, 4th column in from the SE corner.

Larry O tweeted that he was on the Broad St Bridge, so I headed over there to say hi.  Neither of us found Dot.ca in our travels.

As darkness fell over downtown Rochester, we saw the juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron flying over the river and under the Broad St Bridge.  It continued down the river, heading south past the Court St Bridge.  It was a nice way to end our Watch at 7:45 pm.

Goodnight everyone!

Morning watch 9-17-13

Tuesday, September 17th, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Brrr! 37 degrees (F) 3 (C) was the temperature when I stepped out the door this morning at 6:30am for my watch. It was however sunny out which warmed things up nicely by the afternoon

I found Beauty on the top ibeam south corner of OCSR on my way back thru after checking HSBC on the east side. I went over to Main St. by the Radisson Hotel to observe her. She stayed 10-15 minutes then she flew off to the west.

img_0001-beauty1 img_0013-beauty-has-left-the-building

I found Dot.Ca (DC) first on the Frontier Communications Tower (FCT)-he was on a beam in the white section below the southeast cube. He flew off and came back around landing on the next beam down from where he was and started eating cached food that was sitting there. It was then that I noticed Beauty up on the northeast cube watching her handsome mate. I stationed myself in the City Hall parking lot at first where I could see DC best and then moved down Fitzhugh St. in front of the Sister Cities parking garage where I could see both falcons.

img_0014-dc1 img_0015-dc img_0023-dc1<DC

Beauty>img_0026-beautyful img_0030-beauty-and-dc

When DC finished eating he started feaking (wiping his beak off) on the beam and walked to the northeast corner directly below Beauty. He then hopped across to a beam further in on the structure.

img_0044-dc-to-ne-end-of-beam img_0045-dc-hops-to-next-beam-over img_0046-dc

While I was watching Beauty, DC snuck off FCT and so I snuck off to check the Hawkeye plant for a juvie-I didn’t find one so I left for the Brighton site (BS) arriving around 8:30am. I was delighted to find Pigott on the west end of the south side vent since it has been quite a few days since I last saw her.

img_0064-hello-pigott Make sure to click on my pics for full version

Within 5 minutes the action picked up as Miss Pigott spotted a tiercel flying in-but not just any tiercel, this one was a juvie. She crouched down in a defensive posture as the juvie flew back and forth above and in front of her. Pigott was not accepting of  its presence and many times flew off after it aggressively chasing and hitting it a few times-then she would return to the vent and the process started over again.

img_0083-pigott-watching-juvie-tiercel img_0093-get-lost-junior img_0096-pigott-and-juvie-tiercel img_0097-pigott

The young tiercel also landed on the vent a couple times but was rushed by Pigott and sent packing!

img_0102-juvie-is-cute img_0103-cutie-pie-juvie<All juvie tiercel> img_0105-juvie img_0110-juvie

At one point the tiercel was giving chase and Pigott landed on the roof of the southwest extension a couple times and on a south facing window ledge on the same extension. There was vocalization by one of them as they flew at times-not sure which one or if it was both of them.

img_0108-pigott-watching-juvie img_0109-coming-after-you-little-guyimg_0112-pigott-and-juvie-blurry-oh-crap img_0116-pigott img_0118-pigott

They disappeared to the north (front) side of the building and Pigott returned to the vent while the tiercel flew south and that was the last I saw of it. Pigott remained on the vent until 9am then she flew south and didn’t return. It was a solid 30 minutes of action-phew!

img_0119-pigott-landing<Pigott landing and leaving> img_0121-pretty-pigott

I returned downtown after getting a tweet from Pat that DC was on OCSR-when I got there he was gone. I then checked FCT and found the Beautyful one still on the northeast cube on the back of it sleeping.

img_0125-sleeping-beauty

I left her to it and checked Hawkeye one more time with no luck again thus ending my busy watch at 10am. Not only did I see all 3 of our resident adult Peregrine Falcons but I got a bonus juvie tiercel as well to keep me smiling! 🙂

Morning watch 9-16-13

Monday, September 16th, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Todays starting temp was 49 (F) 9 (C) with partly to mostly cloudy skies-a heavy misty rain started toward the end of my watch

I started my watch with  Beauty on HSBC right off the bat at 6:35am on her favorite corner the southeast one. I parked below her on Court St. until she flew around to the northwest corner. The takeoff shot was out of focus so I gave it some pizazz. She took off to the west from the northwest corner seconds after I got parked on Chestnut St. near the Hotel Cadillac.

img_0001-beauty-on-hsbc img_0006-beauty-takes-off-from-hsbc img_0010-beauty-just-before-take-off

I spotted the Beautyful one over on the 2nd arm of the Frontier Communications Tower from the Broad St. Bridge (BSB) so I drove over to City Hall. She was facing west so I drove behind the church and parked next to the Open Door Mission at the end of Montgomery Alley to face her.

img_0015-beauty-on-fct-arm img_0022-beauty-im-all-shook-up

Beauty was in hunt mode and after a while she fly/hopped to the inside of the arm most likely trying to not be seen by prey birds.

img_0023-hop-fly-to-end-of-arm img_0025-hiding-from-prey

After only a few minutes she flew southwest out of view. The next sequence of pics are of Beauty flying off and away from the FCT arm.

img_0031-we-have-lift-off img_0033-go-get-em-beauty img_0034-off-to-the-races img_0035-last-look-at-her-take-off<Click it

I drove down to Hawkeye arriving around 7:30am after Beauty left but the juvie wasn’t around. I hung out about 10 minutes or so then returned to downtown. As I was checking out FCT I got  a tweet from fellow falcon watcher and forum member Pat-she saw a falcon on the base of Mercury. I left immediately and as I pulled onto Bank Place I could see a PEFA peeking up from the base of Mercury.

img_0040-dc

It was Dot.Ca (DC) and after a few minutes I went up to the BSB to observe him. To my surprise Beauty was up there on the base of Mercury too on the northeast corner where she couldn’t be seen from the hole. DC was on the green part of the base by the foot and blending in very well-so well that I almost didn’t notice him. As I found out later Pat had seen Beauty from Graves St. near Aqueduct Park but she couldn’t see DC from there.

img_0047-watching-dc<Beautyimg_0046-beauty-and-dc<Click on it for full version

It was a good thing I went up on the bridge or I would have never known Beauty was up there with her mate. They were both facing the nest box and I thought they might fly over to the Times Square building and do some bonding on camera for all you folks at home to see but they had other things on their minds. Beauty flew off to the east over the river and when I looked back DC was gone as well, but a few seconds later I spotted DC flying from the east across the river and over the Thomson Reuters building west out of view. I found him on the southwest corner of the Wilder building. DC was whining about something and flew off soon after I found him flying around the OCSR and vanishing to the north.

img_0053-dc-whining-about-something img_0055-dc-is-off

I checked at the Brighton site (BS)and found nothing around 9am. As I was driving down Mt. Hope I came across these 2 building murals. The 2nd one says-Let peace and peace and peace be everywhere! I’m all for that!!!

img_0056-building-on-mt-hope-near-ford-st img_0057-let-peace-be-everywhere-amen-to-thatClick on them to see full version

My return trip downtown and a 2nd visit to Hawkeye were both unsuccessful as a heavy misty rain started to fall when I left BS. I called it a watch around 9:30am smiling from ear to ear for having seen our dynamic duo on Mercury as just earlier in my watch I had thought to myself-I sure would like to see a falcon on Mercury again!  🙂

Weekend Falcon Watches – All 4 Rochester Falcons Seen – 9/14 & 9/15/13

Sunday, September 15th, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

Another beautiful weekend for looking for falcons has come and gone.  But, today I saw all 4 Rochester Falcons.  Yes, at least for now I am counting Hawkeye Juvie as #4.  The weather was perfect for the end of summer in Rochester, NY, but the trees are starting to change.  Fall is almost here.

Saturday – September 14, 2013

On Saturday I only found one falcon during the afternoon and that was Pigott out at the BS location.

I looked for the Hawkeye Juvie and Beauty and Dot.ca, but could not find them.  It wasn’t until I checked on my evening Watch that I found Beauty on the south side of the Xerox bldg, 6th column in.  While I was watching Beauty on Xerox, Joyce was at the BS location with Pigott.  While she was there, Dot.ca had visited for a short time.

Sunday – September 15, 2013

I had much better luck today.  I started my Watch at 11:30 am, first checking the Hawkeye location.  About 8 minutes after I arrived (talk about timing!) the juvie flew in and landed on the west side of the building. She took off and landed a few times, finally settling in one spot where it looked like she was checking for cached food.  I quickly tweeted that she had arrived and walked out onto the Driving Park Bridge.  I was only able to get a few pics before she took off and stooped over me down to the south side of the bridge.  I watched her sweep over the tree line on the west side of the river, chasing a Crow.  I lost sight of her behind the trees, just past the middle falls. I never saw her come out the other end.  There are a lot of trees down there and a gorge wall on each side of the river like we see at the High Falls.  I checked as much of the area as I could, but could not find her. Kathy O and Dana joined me out on the east end of the bridge.

Kathy had to leave, so Dana and I went back to our cars and watched from the YMCA.  We hoped she would return, but she didn’t.  Larry O joined us for a short while.

Dana and I headed over to the BS location where we found Pigott on the west side of the northwest extension.

Pigott hopped over to the window just below her old scrape and settled in.  Dana and I left her there with a very full crop.

My next stop was downtown Rochester, where I hoped to find Beauty and Dot.ca, and I did.  Beauty was on the Frontier Communication Tower (FCT), on the north side just below the platform and Dot.ca was on the north side of the OCSR, top IBeam.

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

It was a brisk 47 degrees (F) 8 (C) when I left for downtown this morning but at least it wasn’t dark and overcast for a change. I did see some sun on and off

I had a hard time finding a falcon this morning, first checking downtown then Hawkeye. As I was getting ready to leave the Hawkeye plant I got a tweet from Shaky saying Beauty was next to the main cam. YAY, she hasn’t been up there in quite a while-so I beat feet to the hole and parked behind He’s Chinese where I haven’t been in a while to check her out. I made it in time to see her for a couple short minutes before she started to alarm call and take off to the south.

I tracked the Beautyful one down at the Frontier Communications Tower on the northeast cube. As I parked in the City Hall parking lot she had her back to me and greeted me with a poop shot! lol

img_0015-poop-shot img_0028-all-foofed-up

A couple who was going to church stopped to ask about the falcons and as I was pointing out where Beauty was she flew off into a quick short stoop and returned empty taloned. They were absolutely thrilled to see that as I was, for I don’t care how many times you’ve witnessed a stoop it’s always a thrill! After they left I drove over to the Hochstein School of Music to see the front of Beauty.

At around 7:45am Beauty spread her wings out, kakked and flew off to the east.

I left to find Beauty and ended up finding Dot.Ca (DC) instead-as I was driving down State St. I spotted him on the top ibeam north corner of OCSR. I could barely see his head so I went down Main St. by the Radisson Hotel to have a good view of him.

img_0048-dc img_0050-dc

DC wasn’t there long before he spotted Beauty flying to the FCT with prey in her talons. He flew over and landed on the north side platform railing after she landed on the platform itself.

When I arrived over at FCT Beauty was plucking feathers on the east side of the platform but I couldn’t see DC. I did however hear him softly whine at times so I knew he was up there somewhere begging for Beauty to share her catch. I drove over to the Hochstein parking lot and spotted him on the north side of the platform staring right at Beauty.

Back to the City Hall parking lot where I could see both of them-well, I could barely see DC thru the platform beams.

After a few minutes DC got impatient and started to move in on Beauty walking his way over to where she was eating. She stopped and moved in on the platform a bit and he grabbed a small morsel and continued on to the southeast corner to eat it.

DC started whining again and while I was looking at Beauty I think he left for I didn’t see him after that. I decided to go check the Brighton site (BS) around 8:30am and on my way down State St. I spotted DC up on the top ibeam north corner of OCSR. I found nothing at BS and so returned to downtown stopping on the Broad St. Bridge to check out the river scene. There were great Blue Herons stationed on each side of the bridge, a couple Cormorants and the usual ducks and gulls.

On my way to check Hawkeye again I went by DC still on OCSR and Beauty still on the FCT platform. Once more there was no juvie to be found at the Hawkeye plant thus ending my watch at 9:45am. Make sure to smile-it makes people wonder what you’re up to! 🙂

Morning watch 9-14-13

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Another overcast dark morning with a chilly 51 degrees (F) 11 (C) greeted me when I stepped out the door at 6:25am

As the HSBC building came into view from Court St. I could see Beauty on the southeast corner. While I was parked on Chestnut St. she was eating something but her back was to me so I drove around to the east (back) side and parked next to the post office on Broad St. Beauty had a couple more bites and then she flew around to the northwest corner for a second or two before taking wing and flying west.

img_0004-beauty1 The takeoff was blurry so I messed around with it >img_0006-beauty-in-a-different-hue

I followed behind and found Beauty on the OCSR building top ibeam south corner from the Broad St. Bridge. I drove down to the hole to get closer.

img_0013-beauty1 img_0014-beauty img_0022-hi-cutie

I drove down to Hawkeye but the juvie wasn’t around so I returned to downtown finding Beauty in the same spot on OCSR. This time I parked on Graves St. next to Aqueduct St. to share space with her for 10 minutes when she flew off in a hurry to the northeast past the Andrews Terrace Apartments and into a stoop.

img_0029-beautyful1

I looked over that way but couldn’t find our Beautyful one so back to Hawkeye I went with no more success than the first time. I then drove thru downtown with no sightings on my way to the Brighton site (BS). As I pulled in the driveway I could see a falcon on the north side roof on the northeast extension. It flew off and circled above the building once then disappeared to the south side. I drove around to the back of the building but didn’t find it. Right after, about a dozen crows flew in and started chasing each other, landing on the tippy top silver structure on the roof only to lift off and ride the air currents up there. LarryO and his dog Harold came by for a few minutes to watch the show and then we all left.

I figured since it was the weekend and traffic wouldn’t be bad on 590 that I would take a ride over to the Blossom/Browncroft area to search for a falcon forum member Christianne has seen on a light pole over there. What I found was a raptor of a different kind as in a Red-tail Hawk. It was on a light pole right by the Browncroft exit ramp so I pulled over on the ramp, put my hazard lights on and started clicking away.

As has been my experience, when being watched Red-tail Hawks take off and fly down the road to the next pole and this one was no exception. I followed along and stopped to observe this beauty as he flew off again going 2 poles down prompting me to quit my pursuit of him.

Back to downtown and I spotted Beauty and DC on the Frontier Communications Tower as I was stopped at the traffic light at PlymouthAve. and Main St. Stopping on Church St. in front of the Hochstein School of Music I determined that DC was on the southeast cube directly below Beauty who was nibbling on something on the east side platform railing. I drove over to Fitzhugh St. and parked in front of City Hall for the best view of our dynamic duo. Beauty walked down the rail a bit readied herself and flew off right after I pulled over.

img_0052-dc <DC   Beauty>img_0055-beauty-walks-the-rail img_0056-ready-to-go img_0057-beauty-leaves-fct

I stayed with DC for a few minutes then left to check Hawkeye one more time before ending my watch.

Once again I was unable to find a falcon at Hawkeye but I did end my watch at 9:30am smiling anyway! 🙂
