Morning watch 6-19-13

Wednesday, June 19th, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Todays starting temperature was 56 (F) 13 (C) and clear, making way for lovely blue skies and sunshine.

I could see no falcons when I arrived downtown at 5:20am so I headed to Brighton straight away. I found Pigott on the west end of the south side vent but Dot.Ca (DC) was not anywhere that I could see.

img_0002-pigott

I didn’t stay for more than 10 minutes then returned to downtown to find Beauty on cam 4. Still I didn’t see DC around the Times Square area.

img_0005-beauty

I took a ride around the city but was unsuccessful in finding DC. As I arrived on the Broad St. Bridge (BSB) at 6am Dan was there-he hadn’t seen DC either. 5 minutes later Beauty flew off cam 4 came back around near the nest box area twice then settled on the main cam. 10 minutes later Beauty flew off and disappeared behind the Thomson Reuters building. I started walking down toward Falcon Watcher Central and as I got by the Blue Cross Arena I heard the DC chirp. I looked across Broad St. in time to see Beauty and DC meet above the Philipone building and make a food exchange. Beauty went to the nest box with it and DC flew over to the OCSr top ibeam south corner.

img_0014-dc

I walked back up to where Dan was on the bridge to watch and 25 minutes later AT 6:45AM Dan noticed Beauty on the heel of Mercury.

img_0017-beauty1

We wondered how the heck she managed to fly over there without us seeing-but this stuff happens all the time. I call it falcon games! lol So we had a chuckle over it and Dan left smiling! I went down to the hole to share space with the Beautyful one and around 7:10am DC flew over to the Mercury Money Bag (MMB). So both were on Mercury-I love it when that happens!

img_0027-beauty-looking-at-dc-above-on-mmb <Beauty looks up at DC       img_0029-mercury-falcons Click all pics for full version

As I watched a police officer checking out a parked car the falcon games continued as a switch was made with Beauty now on the MMB and DC on the heel.

img_0038-dc <DC   Beauty> img_0053-beauty

Things stayed this way for the next 15 minutes, then suddenly Beauty flew off to the south toward the river and DC followed right behind her.

img_0054-beauty-takes-off img_0055-dc-takes-off

They quickly left my field of vision behind the Thomson Reuters building only to come back in view less than a half minute later. Beauty flew to the main cam and DC flew to the MMB.

img_0056-beauty-lands-on-main-cam img_0058-dc

Around 7:35am Beauty flew up to the column directly above the nest box and DC was also gone from Mercury.

img_0083-man-that-sun-is-bright-today

Just before 8am Beauty flew to the heel of Mercury. I couldn’t see DC anywhere in the vicinity.

img_0085-beauty

I left the hole and drove up to the BSB where I could see more buildings to look for DC but I didn’t find him. I watched Beauty for a few minutes and called it a watch.

img_0089

Once again I left for home smiling for having seen all 3 Rochester Peregrine Falcons! 🙂

Banding day watch 6-18-13

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watch MAK

Watchers on the ground were as follows: Dan, Larry, Brian, Joyce, Lynda and Tim, KathyO, Dana, Barbara(watcher) Barb (BBP bander) and myself.

Beauty and Dot.Ca were marvelous defending their nest box from the “bad man”. Beauty didn’t leave the air until all was done and over. She landed on the deck and then went up on the main cam to check on her family to be sure all were present and accounted for. Dot.Ca (DC) was hesitant at first but he soon joined Beauty to try and scare off these awful humans that were messing with his nest box and kids. He made the closest swoop at the nest box and I’m sure that it’s from all the practice he had from earlier this year when he swooped on Beauty.

They banded 2 girls and a boy: Rosetta, Voyager and Baron

I have provided links below of a photo album and 3 videos- I hope you enjoy!

Morning watch 6-18-13

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

This mornings weather was mostly cloudy with the same temperature as yesterday 59 (F) 15 (C) and a busy breeze!

Beauty was on the southeast column of the Times Square building (TSB)one level higher than nest box when I arrived in the hole at 5:20am

img_0003-beauty img_0005-beauty-on-tsb

DC was not anywhere that I could see him. At 5:50am Beauty flew down to the nest box and a minute or so later flew out around Mercury and back to land on top of the main cam.

img_0009-beauty-takes-off img_0014-beauty

Beauty flew off about 10 minutes later going behind the Philipone building where I couldn’t see her. I then found Dot.Ca (DC) on the OCSR building south corner top ibeam.

img_0018-dc-takes-a-walk

According to cam watcher Campgee DC brought food to nest box where upon Beauty took it and fed eyases. I was driving up to the Broad St. Bridge (BSB) to see if I could find where Beauty had gone so I missed the food exchange. Thanks Camp! Around 6:25am Beauty flew to the west corner of OCSR top ibeam with DC at the south corner. They could see each other.

img_0027-beauty

Camp reported that Beauty had finished up feeding the kids and had left the building. I missed her leaving because I was watching DC and I don’t have eyes in the back of my head! lol Thanks once again Camp for being those eyes! DC left OCSR and flew to the main cam.

img_0034-dc

At this point I left to check on Pigott at the Brighton site (BS). She was on the northwest corner of the northwest extension when I arrived at 7:10am and quickly flew off to the back (south side) of the building where I found her on the southwest corner of the southwest extension.

img_0041-pigott img_0044-pigott

5 minutes later Miss Pigott flew to the southeast corner of the east extension and she was flying very well I might add.

img_0045-pigott img_0046-pigott

She seemed quite restless this morning-maybe hunger was driving her from one spot to the other as she was definitely looking for prey. Pigott stayed for the next half hour and then took off and landed on the southwest corner of the southwest extension.

img_0052-pigott

15 minutes later Pigott was off again flying to the southeast corner of the southeast extension where sahe hung out for 19 minutes before flying south out of view.

img_0054-pigott

I waited about 10 minutes and headed back downtown where I found DC on the main cam and Beauty on the south corner top ibeam of OCSR.

img_0069-dc2 img_0076-beauty

This is where I left them thus ending my watch at 8:30am. Now I’m off to watch Beauty and DC as their eyases will be banded in about an hour and that my friends is making me smile! 🙂

Morning watch 6-17-13

Monday, June 17th, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

It was a gorgeous morning with clear skies, sun, a gentle breeze and a starting  temperature of 59 (F) 15 (C)

One of the eyases fell out of the nest box yesterday and despite big efforts to get back and help from mom it was forced to spend the night out in the playpen. Beauty stayed next to it all night after she corralled the other 2 to a corner in the nest box. It was still there when I left for my watch. As I arrived in the hole (Aqueduct St.) at 5:21am I caught Dot.Ca (DC) flying from the nest box over my head to the Mercury Money Bag (MMB) and Beauty for a fleeting moment on the deck.

img_0007-gonna-get-you-little-birdie Remember to always click on my pics to see full version

A few minutes later, cam watcher Campgee reported that just before DC brought food the little eyas made his way back into the nest box and Beauty was feeding all. Thanks and phew! So we can now expect more escapees and the beginning of the most nerve wrecking part of their lives for us to watch. Especially once they find their way out of the play pen and deck to the edge of no return. Anxiety will rule us then!

So 20 minutes later at 5:50am DC flew down to the base of Mercury and started picking at something. I went up to the Broad St. Bridge (BSB) at this time and joined Dan who was sitting in his chair.

img_0010-cleared-for-take-offimg_0018-dc-eats

DC worked on plucking feathers and having a bite to eat as well for the next 15 minutes and then took off to make a delivery to the nest box at 6am. Beauty flew in, grabbed the prey and flew off with it, I assume to clean it up some more and have a few bites for herself.

img_0020-dc-delivers-the-goods <DC>img_0021-dc-brought-food img_0022-beauty-flies-in<Beauty

img_0023-beauty-takes-food img_0025-beauty-leaves-to-prep-food-better Beauty grabs food and flies off with it

Meanwhile, DC flew up under the northeast wing of the Times Square Building (TSB) to preen and look for his next prey bird and Beauty returned to the nest box to feed the family.

img_0029-beauty-returns-with-breakfast img_0032-dc1

Around 6:35am Beauty flew out with leftovers and cached them on Mercury and flew to the main cam to watch over the eyases with dad up above at the northeast wing. Dan left just before 7am so I drove down in front of the Blue Cross Arena for a closer view.

img_0039-dc1 <DC>img_0046-dc img_0049-beauty<Beauty>img_0050-beauty2

With everyone settled after eating breakfast I set out for the Brighton site to check on Pigott. I arrived around 7:20am finding Miss Pigott on the east extension northeast corner.

img_0057-pigott img_0060-pigott

She was doing a lot of wing stretching as well as preening and watching the bird activity below in the trees. I spent only 10-15 minutes with Pigott before she flew off to the east.

img_0061-pigott img_0062-pigott-takes-off

I watched her with my trusty binoculars as a bird flew into her path and she nearly grabbed it only to continue on her flight and go into a stoop as I lost sight of her. She didn’t return so I went back downtown after 20 minutes. I found our downtown dynamic duo where I left them-Beauty on the main cam and DC under the northeast wing as I parked in the hole behind the Philipone building.

img_0063-taken-from-the-hole img_0070-beauty img_0067-dc2

I was satisfied to have seen all 3 Rochester Peregrine Falcons doing what they do safe and sound so I ended my watch at 8:10am. They so make me smile! 🙂

Morning watch 6-16-13

Sunday, June 16th, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

62 (F) 17 (C)  to start the day with overcast skies making for a dark watch. Hey, we had 2 sunny days in a row-I guess we were due right!? lol

So I pulled into the hole (Aqueduct St.) around 5:15am and saw who I thought was Beauty up on the Mercury Money Bag (MMB). Turns out it was Dot.Ca ( DC) and he flew off before I stopped the car. I then looked to the nest box and watched Beauty fly out and over to the base of Mercury and then to the main cam.

img_0004-beauty img_0008-beauty

Beauty vocalized a bit as DC flew past her before heading over to OCSR top ibeam south corner showing me his back. He stayed only a moment before he was off to Widows Walk landing on the northwest corner below the railing.

img_0009-dc-seems-like-im-always-lookin-over-my-shoulder img_0014-dc-looking-at-prey Click on my pics to view the full version

I had to drive over to Fitzhugh St. and park in the lot next to the Episcopal Church of St. Luke and St. Simon Cyrene to see the front of him as he was watching some small birds below and in full hunt mode. He stayed only about 5 minutes and then he was off again disappearing behind buildings.

img_0018-dc-taking-off-from-widows-walk img_0019-dc-is-off img_0020-dc-outta-here

15 minutes later I discovered DC on a small lip of a ledge below the base of Mercury northeast corner. He was keeping an eye on something down in the river.

img_0023-dc-hunting img_0025-dc-looking-for-breakfast

A couple minutes later DC flew off to the south upriver, followed by Beauty with both leaving my field of vision for a second or two. Then Beauty flew to the deck on the north side of the main cam before going to the nest box and DC went to the main cam just before 6am.

img_0033-dc

10 minutes later I happened to look over to Mercury and saw Beauty on the heel-now how did she sneak out from that nest box area without me seeing her. It happens all the time! lol

img_0039-beauty

I was now at the top of the stairs where we call Falcon Watcher Central and there was a gorgeous male Housefinch on the railing. Beauty left while I took a couple pics of it. Oh, she was playing with me this morning!

img_0042-male-housefinch-on-railing-by-falcon-watcher-central

DC was still on the main cam watching over his children and 15 minutes Beauty returned from her little jaunt to land on the Mercury money bag briefly and then off to the east.

img_0053-and-shes-off

She crossed the river going behind the South Ave. garage  and I saw her resurface 3 or 4 times in front of the Chase tower scaring up the pigeon population that resides over there. Now up on the Broad St. Bridge (BSB) I spotted the Beautyful one hovering above Xerox. She would soar in and out of view before vanishing all together. I drove back behind Xerox and checked the buildings for her unsuccessfully and returned in time to see DC  fly to the MMB.

img_0057-dc OOPS, DC is headless! Click on the pic and he’ll get it back. Teehee!

A couple minutes later I spotted Beauty on the column directly above the nest box.

img_0062-beauty-above-nest-box

I went back down to the hole to observe Beauty as she was in hunt mode, and might I add that both Beauty and DC were working hard to catch breakfast for their eyases this morning.

img_0067-beauty-watching-birdies

At 7:10am Beauty flew east again and DC was also gone from Mercury so I set out to look for them. As I returned to the BSB I noticed a PEFA on the top arm of the jail tower-I believe it was Beauty and she didn’t stay long before she was off flying over to the main cam.

img_0070-looks-like-beauty-to-me img_0075-beauty

As I was parked in front of the Blue Cross Arena on Exchange Blvd. now I missed what Beauty stooped on 5 minutes later as she went off to the northwest side of the Times Square building. She returned less than 10 minutes later to the main cam.

img_0077-beauty-is-off img_0078-beauty-spread-out

I decided to go check the Brighton site (BS)  for Pigott at this time and just as I was leaving I noticed this Great Blue Heron on top of the Blue Cross Arena.

img_0081-gbh-on-bca

Arriving at BS at 7:50am I found Pigott on the northeast  corner of the east extension and she had a full crop. Little did I know-she wasn’t done filling it for after 10 minutes she started munching on something up there.

img_0083-pigott-with-full-crop-yay

I spent about an hour with Miss Pigott before returning to downtown as it started to sprinkle. I spotted DC up under the northeast wing.

img_0107-dc

I watched him for a few minutes and ended my watch just before the 9 o’clock hour. Our downtown Peregrine parents were very active this morning trying to catch breakfast for their family. While reviewing the rfalconcam now tweets I came across one that I never received at 8:23am from Annette who reported Beauty feeding the eyases. Thank you! So I left downtown smiling as I had seen all 3 of  Rochesters Peregrine falcons! 🙂

Morning watch 6-15-13

Saturday, June 15th, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Another clear day with bright blue skies and sunshine-the temperature when I left for my morning watch was 56 (F) 13 (C)

I made my way downtown by 5:15am only to find no falcons in view so I drove to our Brighton site (BS). I found 1 falcon on the northwest corner of the northwest extension.

img_0006-dc1

I thought it was Pigott since I didn’t see another falcon anywhere when I drove around the building but I found out soon after that it was in fact Dot.Ca (DC). 5-10 minutes later he would fly out to the southwest and double back going into the cubby on the west side. He started echupping and then Pigott flew in from the north and joined DC in the cubby. They would echup and whine for the next 2 minutes or so and then DC flew out and up to the southwest corner of the southwest extension briefly and then to the southwest corner of the west extension, while Pigott remained in the cubby whining loudly.

img_0022-dc1 img_0027-dc1

DC left a minute later and the whining stopped,  less than a minute later  Miss Pigott came out to the front  ledge of the cubby before flying up to the southwest corner of the west extension where DC had just vacated.

img_0029-pigott img_0034-pigott

15 minutes later at 6:05am Pigott flew off to the west and stooped on a small bird showing great speed. With the flick of a wing Pigott was practically upside down trying to grab the bird before it escaped into a tree. She was inches from making the catch-and were it not for that tree she would have had a meal. I’m confident in saying that the damaged and missing feathers in her tail and left wing are not hampering her ability to hunt for herself. A blurry take off shot but you can see the damage pretty well in the next pic.

img_0040-pigott-showing-damaged-and-missing-feathers Make sure to always click on my pics to view the full version

I mistakenly tweeted that Pigott flew to the southwest corner of the southwest extension after her failed stoop-I really meant to say southeast corner of southeast extension.

img_0041pigott

I stayed with Pigott for 20 minutes or so then headed back downtown to check out the action there. Arriving at 6:38am I found DC on the main cam but Beauty was nowhere that I could see her.

img_0047-dc

DC left the main cam as I drove up to the Broad St. Bridge from the hole to look around for Beauty. 5 minutes later DC was back on the main cam and Beauty arrived on the base of Mercury with prey. I went back down to the hole at this point to watch.

img_0054-beauty-with-a-catch img_0065-dc

The Beautyful one started plucking feathers and was eating a bit also for the next 15 minutes. She then flew to the nest box with the goods to feed the eyases. DC flew over to the base of Mercury and was looking around for any scraps she might have left behind.

img_0066-beauty-takes-off-for-nest-box<Beauty> img_0070-beauty-landing-on-deck-with-prey DC>img_0075-dc-looking-for-scraps

After 5 minutes DC flew back to perch on the main cam and watch as Beauty fed their kids. At around 7:30am Beauty flew out with leftovers to the base of Mercury and cached them. While I was tweeting Beauty flew to the main cam replacing DC who was now on the base of Mercury eating. I almost didn’t even figure out  they switched on me. lol Sneaky little peregrines!

img_0078-dc <DC

One minute Beauty is there on base and the next time I look after tweeting DC is there!

img_0090-beauty <Beauty   DC> img_0091-dc1

DC ate his share and took off with the rest to the nest box. Beauty took it from him and cached it somewhere while DC remained on deck. Beauty returned to the main cam and DC flew over to OCSR 2nd  ibeam south corner.

img_0093-dc-eats<DC    Beauty>img_0103-beauty DC>img_0105-dc1

img_0107-beauty <Beauty   DC> img_0111-dc

This is where I would leave them, thus ending a very eventful morning watch at 8:10am, smiling for having seen all 3 Rochester Peregrine Falcons! 🙂

Morning watch 6-14-13

Friday, June 14th, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Today the starting temperature was 54 (F) 12 (C) with fog burning off early from the wonderful sun breaking out!

I drove to the hole first thing as is my daily routine now, arriving at 5:20am but didn’t see Dot.Ca (DC) so off to Brighton I went. Pigott was on the east extension at the corner where it meets the southeast extension 2 windows down.

img_0002-good-morning-pigott img_0004-pigott

Another trip around the building to make sure I didn’t miss DC anywhere and then I settled for about half hour to observe Miss Pigott as she preened and rested.

img_0006-clean-up img_0008-pretty-pigott

I returned to downtown where I found DC on the main cam and Beauty on OCSR top ibeam south corner so I parked in the hole where I had a close view of both of them. I also saw that Dan was on the Broad St. Bridge (BSB).

img_0013-watching-birdies img_0015-beauty1 Make sure to click on pics for a full version

Around 615am DC flew toward OCSR then turned right going into a stoop down toward the river and out of view. While I watched him Beauty left OCSR and went to the Mercury Money Bag (MMB) and a minute later flew south.

img_0020-we-have-lift-off img_0021-dc1 img_0022-dc<DC  Beauty>img_0023-beauty

It was time to join Dan on the BSB so I could see what our falcons were up to. Dan told me that Beauty had caught a pigeon and went behind Thomson Reuters with it. I walked down to Falcon Watcher Central to check the area but didn’t see her. During this time DC landed on the MMB.

img_0025-beauty

As I walked back to where Dan was on the bridge Beauty snuck into the nest box with her catch as reported by cam watchers Donna and Annette. Thank you ladies! DC also flew over to the Times Square Building (TSB) landing under the northeast wing at this time. Game on as he was in full hunt mode after seeing Beauty with food. They seem to compete with each other for feeding the kids which is a good thing for well fed eyases!

img_0029-dc-in-hunt-mode Click it!

As DC flew off TSB Dan decided to end his watch at 6:45am so I went in search of DC. After checking the east side I found him 20 minutes later on the south corner of OCSR top ibeam where he quickly flew off to the ledge under northeast wing again. I drove down to the hole for closer viewing.

img_0033-hi-handsome

5 minutes later Beauty flew over to the base of Mercury and DC to the 2nd ibeam south corner of OCSR.

img_0046-beauty1<Beauty      DC>img_0048-fuzzy-dc

He was plucking feathers from prey-not sure whether it was cached or caught by him. Beauty hid up on the base for a few minutes and then she flew out and up to the heel of Mercury while DC flew over to the nest box with his package.

img_0051-beauty1

As you can see from that last pic Beauty had something to say about DC taking food to the kids. She had just finished feeding them so she must have felt they had enough for she flew to the nest box and as Donna told me, gave DC the boot! He took his tasty treat to the heel of Mercury and started munching on it.

img_0059-dc

Since the sun was behind DC making for dark pics I walked up to the BSB and watched DC eat his fill, then cache a tiny amount of leftovers behind the knee of Mercury at around 7:30am.

img_0063-dc-caches-leftovers img_0067-dc1

DC then flew to the top ibeam of OCSR south corner. I could see Beauty perched on the front ledge of the nest box at this time as well.

img_0071-dc img_0074-beauty1

I walked back down to the hole to watch DC as he napped a little and cleaned his talons. He eventually turned his back to the world so I ended my watch at 8am with everything peaceful.

img_0078-caught-dc-sleeping img_0089-easy-does-it

Keep smiling everyone! 🙂

Falcon Watch – All 3 Seen on a Rainy Afternoon (3:45 – 5:30 pm) 6/13/13

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

It was raining all day long today and it continued to lightly rain as I left work and headed downtown.  My first stop as always was the Broad St Bridge (BSB).  Today I was lucky.  I could see both Beauty, up on Pan Cam or Camera #1, near the nest box and Dot.ca was up on the OCSR, top IBeam, just left of the south corner.

I drove down onto Aqueduct ST (aka the Hole) for a little closer look.  Just after I parked my car, Beauty stooped off of Cam #1 low over the parking lot on the north side of the Times Square Bldg (TSB).  She flew a few feet off the ground and flipped up the side of the Telesca Bldg and looped around back to land on Camera #1.  She was definitely in Hunt Mode.  I looked over at DC and he was looking at Beauty.  lol

I didn’t have much time tonight and I wanted to see Pigott, so off to the BS location I went.  There was a band practicing nearby.  Very nice!  When I arrived at BS at 4:30 pm, I spotted Pigott on the north side of the building on the NW corner of the NE extention.

She was looking everywhere!  Left, right, up, down.  She preened just a little bit, but most of her attention was on the world around her.  I love when a bird bobs its’ head.  To me that means “I am leaving very soon!”  lol

About 10 minutes after I arrived, and I was viewing Pigott from below, she took off, heading north, northeast. She flew straight and strong.  No hesitation.  I’m pretty sure she was also in hunt mode and I hoped she caught her dinner somewhere nearby.

I watched her fly north, until I couldn’t see her anymore.  She was not in any hurry.

After Pigott left, I circled the bldg every few minutes and parked and waited, hoping she would return with food.  She never did return before I had to leave.

On the way home, I stopped on the BSB, dowtown.  Both Beauty and Dot.ca were sitting a few feet apart on the OCSR, top IBeam.  Beauty is on the left and Dot.ca on the right.

That is where I left them at about 5:30 pm.

I was very happy to have seen all 3 adult Rochester Falcons.  June has been a very wet month for Rochester.  Hope there are some sunny days on their way.  Goodnight everyone!

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

I checked the radar before leaving- the rain and storms headed our way looked like they would hold off until after my watch-no such luck. The starting temperature was 64 (F) 18 (C) – the rain started a little after 6am as a very light few drops. Within 45 minutes it was raining moderately and by the time I ended my watch around 8am it was pouring!

Like the last few days, I started my watch downtown looking for Dot.Ca (DC) and when I didn’t see him I went to the Brighton site (BS).  Cam watcher Campgee reported that Beauty left and returned to nest box without breakfast while I was on my way to BS. Thank you for your support!Arriving there at 5:30am I could see 2 bumps in the darkness. Pigott was on the northwest corner of the northwest extension and DC was on the northwest corner of the west extension. She was whining loudly and he was ignoring her as she was facing him and he was facing west away from her.

After 10 minutes passed DC spread his wings and prepared for lift off-flying northwest toward downtown. As soon as he left Pigott stopped whining.

I stayed a few minutes to see if he would return said good bye to Miss Pigott and left for downtown. Both Annette and Camp reported Beauty left the nest box, DC landed on the rail outside and Beauty returned with food while I was in transit. Thanks! I found the Beautyful one on the Mercury money bag when I arrived in the hole a little after 6am. It must have been a small meal since she was done feeding already.

After 20 minutes I drove up out of the hole to the Broad St. Bridge (BSB) to look for DC. Beauty left Mercury while I was on my way and I didn’t find DC so I set out to search for him. At 6:45am as I was stopped on Woodbury St. by the Geva Theater I spotted a PEFA on the west side railing of HSBC. I took a pic, then headed over to get closer so I could ID it.

Just as I pulled up on Chestnut St. in front of Manhattan Square Park it flew off over my head.  I jumped out of my car to follow it to the south where it went into a stoop so fast that I swear I saw a jetstream trail behind it. lol I lost sight of it and thought the size was too small for it to be Beauty. Donna let me know DC was at the nest box with food so I have to believe it was DC that I saw and his stoop was successful. Thank you for the assist! It started raining and again it must have been a small meal for about 10 minutes later from the BSB I spotted DC on the 2nd ibeam south corner of HSBC.

I watched him in the pouring rain for a bit and decided he wasn’t going anywhere for a while thus ending my watch at just about 8am. Once again I left downtown smiling for having seen all 3 Rochester Peregrine Falcons safe and sound! 🙂

Falcon Watch – Late Afternoon/Evening – Beauty (DT) & Pigott (BS) (3:45 – 7:20 pm) 6/12/13

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

I arrived downtown to find Beauty up at the nest box on Camera #4.  Brian H was watching from the picnic tables at the Library and he had just tweeted out her location.  Joyce arrived and we all gathered on the Broad St Bridge (BSB) to watch Beauty and chat for awhile.  I searched the whole downtown area and could not find Dot.ca.  But not to worry, he did show up later in the nest box (on Rfalconcam cameras) and Joyce saw both Beauty and Dot.ca when she drove through downtown on her way home at approximately 8:30 pm.

I left Joyce and Brian on the BSB and made my way over to the BS location to find Pigott.  I arrived a little before 5 pm and found her on the west side of the SE extension on a windowsill 5 down from the top.  I found a spot to park where I had a good view of her and settled in for a Pigott Watch.  Oh, and I did check to make sure Dot.ca wasn’t there first.

Pigott was being serenaded or should I say scolded by a couple of irate Starlings that were nesting nearby.  Many Starlings and other small birds were busy moving back and forth above and below Pigott and she had her eye on every one of them turning her head every which way.  It was a warm afternoon, temps in the 70’s (F) and she was in a nice shady area.  She wasn’t preening or dozing as much as I have seen her in the past few days.  She did do a lot of stretching and I saw her spit up a pellet and poop a couple times.  Just proof that she has been eating.  Fellow Rochester Falcon Watcher Kathy O, joined me on the Watch.

At 7:00 pm, Pigott took off from the windowsill and we watched her fly out from the building, first heading south, she then turned back to the north and made a full circle around the building returning to the south side.  She landed on the SE corner of the SW extension and then moved in a bit where we couldn’t see her.  Here is the one and only flight shot I got of Pigott flying today.  She did not have any problems flying at all as far as I could tell.  Beautiful flight!

Pigott moved away from the corner of the building onto the roof and we lost sight of her.  I walked over to the east side of the building and found her on the east side of the roof she had been on, just further down.

I am pretty sure that she had cached food up there when I first saw her, so she may have gotten a bite to eat while out of our sight.

This is where we left Pigott at the end of our Watch at 7:20 pm.  It seemed to me that she was more active than I had seen her since Sunday.  It was nice to see.

I’ll leave you with this picture of a critter that shares space with the BS Falcons, on the ground of course!  Night everyone!
