Morning watch 3-25-14

Tuesday, March 25th, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

This mornings watch was chilly at 19 degrees (F) -7 (C) but there was wall to wall sunshine and blue skies with a bit of a breeze

As I was about to leave the house I heard echupping at the nest box coming from my computer as I leave the livestream going this time of year. I ran in to find Beauty and Dot.Ca (DC) at the scrape so off I went downtown to start my watch, but when I got to the Broad St. bridge (BSB) DC was nowhere to be found and Beauty was still at the nest box.

img_0003-beauty2

A couple minutes later Beauty flew to the base of Mercury for a couple more minutes and then flew to the south side of the Times Square building (TSB) and dive bombed a crow that had gotten too close to her nest box. She chased it around to the back of the TSB and past Widows Walk before returning to land on the northeast corner of the roof above the well on TSB.

I had driven down to the hole to share space with the Beautyful one simply because there was no better place to observe her and I saw more than I expected. Around 7:30am she pooped and turned around to face me.We Rochester watchers love to get the poop shots! lol

img_0014-look-out-below img_0015-poop-art<Click it

Shortly there after Beauty saw something to the north and got in the crouched down, there’s a falcon coming in position and there he was-DC bringing food!

img_0017-beauty img_0018-beauty2 img_0019-dc-is-coming-in-with-food img_0020-you-better-have-some-for-me-dc

Beauty was squawking up a storm as she flew over to the nest box and DC took his small package up under the northwest wing of the TSB.

img_0023-dc-with-food img_0024-beauty-at-nest-box

DC started eating and Beauty flew over to the Mercury money bag (MMB). Beauty didn’t stay long before flying to the northwest wing ledge. DC had either left or was up there where I couldn’t see him. Beauty picked up one tiny tidbit of food left behind and down the hatch it went in one gulp!

img_0025-beauty img_0028-beauty-looks-for-food-dc-had-under-nw-wing

I left to look for DC with no luck, and when I got back, I spotted Beauty flying to the base of Mercury from the BSB. After a few minutes she started eating so I believe DC may have dropped it off there while I was gone looking for him or she took it there herself. I had gotten a tweet from Donna saying there had been a tussle at the nest box over food. In any event Beauty got something to eat. DC was under the northeast wing. And Larry tweeted no falcon seen at the Brighton site.

img_0033-beauty img_0035-beauty1 img_0040-dc1

I went down to the hole to be centrally located between the 2 of them and at 8:05am DC flew over to the base of Mercury startling Beauty, who stopped eating and hussled to get ready for DC to mate with her. There was quite a bit of hurried maneuvering that I didn’t see very good because the sun was directly behind them but I snapped off a shot of them before DC flew off to the nest box and Beauty followed right behind him.

img_0043-bdc-mating-on-base-of-mercury img_0044-dc-to-deck-after-mating<DC lands on deckimg_0045-beauty-to-deck<Beauty on deck

Almost a minute later DC came shooting out and went to the base of Mercury and started eating what Beauty had been enjoying before their little rendezvous. I thought this would be a good time to go to the Brighton site (BS) so I went up to the BSB first to see if Beauty was still at the nest box-she was and DC left Mercury while I was en route. After I left, Annette tweeted that Beauty and DC were bonding at the nest box.

img_0046-dc-out-of-nest-box img_0047-dc-leaving-nest-box1 img_0050-dc-looking-for-food-left-behind-by-beauty img_0054-beauty-at-nb

I arrived at BS just about 8:30am to find Pigott on the northeast corner of the northeast extension with her back facing out. For the better part of an hour that I stayed with Miss Pigott she didn’t much but look north toward downtown, probably watching for DC.

img_0061-pigott-looks-like-she-has-a-beard img_0062-i-see-you-back-there-mak img_0072-pigott

I left her to it and headed back downtown. I stopped on Exchange Blvd. by Plymouth Ave. to have a look at the south side of things and saw Beauty fly behind TSB and then go to the nest box. Annette tweeted that Beauty was at the scrape so that’s how I knew it was Beauty. Just as I approached Times Square at 9:15am Beauty flew out of the nest box area and headed east. I drove up on the BSB and after a few moments spotted a falcon (probably Beauty) flying south of Xerox and then it disappeared into the sun. 5 minutes later Beauty was under the northeast wing of TSB. I went and parked in front of the Blue Cross Arena to see her better as she did some serious preening.

img_0089-beauty-preening-away img_0090-beautyful

I want to thank Donna and Annette for their help from behind the cams today. Beauty was looking especially lovely which sent me on my way smiling thus ending my watch at 9:30am. 🙂

Morning watch 3-24-14

Monday, March 24th, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Lake effect snow showers fell throughout my watch due to a cold temperature of 16 (F) -9 (C) some sun shown at times but it was mainly cloudy

While enroute downtown this morning I got a tweet from Donna that Beauty and Dot.Ca (DC) were at the nest-6:58am. When I arrived on the Broad St. bridge I noticed DC over on the top ibeam of OCSR and I didn’t see Beauty at the nest box so I don’t know where she was at that time. I went down to the hole to get closer to DC parking on Aqueduct St.

img_0003-dc1

DC flew off and then as I pulled forward to see the nest box I saw a falcon fly in and back out from the nest box. I reported that it was DC but it could have been Beauty-I can’t say for sure. I drove around searching and at 7:30am I found both Beauty and DC on Kodak Office (KO). She was on the southeast corner of the launchpad and he was on the cupola above her.

img_0020-bdc Please click on my pics to see the full version

They stayed pretty much in the same position with Beauty glancing up over her shoulder at DC and whining every once in a while. The snow made it hard for my camera to focus as well as the fact that it’s a long way up to the top of the KO tower. They flew off simultaneously heading southwest and I wasn’t able to find them so I left to check the Brighton site (BS). There were no falcons present when I arrived there at 8:35am. There were however, 2 crows eating on the east side ledge that the rooftop tree grows on. It was most likely cached food that either Pigott or DC put there.

img_0029-crows-eating-cached-food

This is why Peregrines go after crows-because they steal there food from the pantry. So I went back downtown and promptly found the Beautyful one on the top ibeam near the south corner of OCSR. The sun was glaring down on her and washing her out which makes for poor photos so I went to Graves St. by Aqueduct Park to try and cut the angle of glare down.

img_0037-beauty1 img_0039-beauty1 img_0040-beauty

It helped but still wasn’t good so I went over to the Radisson Hotel by Main St-it  was a bit better from there.

img_0045-hi-beautyful img_0047-beauty

10 minutes later Beauty flew east across the river and out of my view behind the hotel.

img_0052-beauty-is-off img_0053-beauty img_0055-flap-away img_0056-see-ya

When she didn’t show up anywhere in the vicinity I drove off to check out the east side but while I was gone Donna reported that Beauty and DC were at the nest around 9:11am and that Beauty left a minute or so later. (I thank you Donna, for your help on the cams both yesterday and today and also to Annette for yesterday as well.) So anyway, by the time I got back to the BSB at 9:15am there was no action at the scrape but thru the snow flurry that was falling I caught a glimpse of a falcon at the back of the northeast wing ledge. I parked in front of the Blue cross Arena on Exchange Blvd. and could see that it was DC with his white chest, and he was munching on something.

img_0059-dc

DC flew northeast after a minute or so and when I drove over to the hole I saw him on the top ibeam of OCSR southeast side and Beauty on the south corner. It looked to me like he was eating but less than a minute later he stopped so he might have just been cleaning himself and Beauty walked a few feet from the corner at this time.

img_0065-bdc img_0067-bdc

They were 6 windows apart from each other and just stood there occasionally looking at each other or out over the river. At 9:28am DC flew off followed by Beauty 5 seconds later heading toward Times Square.

img_0078-dc-has-left-the-building<DC      img_0079-beauty-has-left-the-building<Beauty

I drove down to where I could see the nest box thinking they were going there, but DC was nowhere to be seen and Beauty had landed under the southeast wing.

img_0082-beauty

I ended my watch at 9:35am leaving Beauty on Times Square and I think DC probably went to visit Pigott. Keep smiling! 🙂

Sunday Falcon Watch – 3/23/14 – A Cold, Blustery Spring Day in Rochester, NY

Sunday, March 23rd, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

The days continue to get longer and the calendar says it’s spring.  Yeah right!  Winter just won’t give up.  It was a cold, snowy, blustery day, with some intervals of blue sky and sunshine.

Before heading downtown, I decided to check out the area along the lake first.  No falcon sightings at Russell Station or Charlotte.  I was glad to see more open water than I had seen in a very long time.  Even the small ponds were filled with all kinds of ducks, geese and swans.  It’s been such a hard winter for them.  I was happy to see one diving duck come up with a fish and gobble it down.  🙂

On my way downtown, I checked out Seneca Towers and Hawkeye.  No falcons at either location, but I did notice a lot of white wash down the the south side of the building.  This could be a sign that a falcon has been using that spot.

Fellow watcher Dana was already reporting from downtown, so I joined her on Aqueduct St. (aka the hole).  When I arrived, Dot.ca was on the OCSR south side top IBeam and Beauty was eating on the base of the Mercury statue.

She then flew up to the nest box, while Dot.ca remained on the OCSR.

After a few moments, Dot.ca joined Beauty in the nest box.  He then flew out and landed on the Wilder Bldg fire escape ladder.

Dot.ca took off heading south.  Dana and I thought he probably headed to the BS location to check on Pigott.  Beauty also left the nest box and landed on the green stripe of the Wilder Bldg.

We decided to head over to the BS location, where we found Pigott on an east facing window on the south east extension, below the tree ledge.

Dot.ca took off and flew around the west end of the building.  I went to look for him, but could not find him.  Pigott remained on the east end of the building for awhile before taking off vocalizing her alarm call.  Dana and I drove over to the west end of the building just in time to see Pigott take off from the building.  She was gaining altitude on a very large raptor that was flying over heading west.  Pigott gave up with the raptor continued out of her territory.  She headed towards the north east, where we lost sight of her.

After Pigott left, we headed back downtown.  After searching and not finding any falcons, Dana decided to head out.  I wanted to check the downtown area one more time before ending my watch.  I found Beauty on the south side of the Xerox Tower, 5th column in from the south east corner.

I left Beauty on Xerox and headed down Broad St.  The bridge was filled with cars, so I pulled over and took a look around.  There was a falcon up in the nest box.  Beauty beat me over.  lol  Dot.ca was back up on the south side top IBeam on OCSR.

Beauty took off and I made my way down to Aqueduct St (the hole) just in time to see that she had landed on the Wilder building.  Dot.ca flew up to the nest box and Beauty joined him for a little bit of bowing and scraping. When he was done, he came rocketing out of the nest box, flew around the OCSR and over the Cross Rds Bldg, heading north.  A few moments later Beauty flew out  of  the nest box and landed again on the Wilder Bldg.

Beauty didn’t stay long.  She too headed north.  I checked out the Kodak Tower, but could not find either Beauty or Dot.ca.

While I was reporting what was happening downtown, Dana reported seeing a black over green banded juvenile Peregrine Falcon on Seneca Towers on her way home.  🙂

I checked out Kodak Park on my way home, but found no falcons there.  Goodnight everyone!

Oh, wait!  Would you like to see Dot.ca and Beauty going into the nest box.  I just happened to get it on video.  Just click on the following link.  Enjoy!

Morning watch 3-23-14

Sunday, March 23rd, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Well, winter has returned for the next couple days as the temperature was 22 (F) -6 (C) with snow showers and overcast conditions

I started my watch today with Dot.Ca (DC) who was on the south side of OCSR at 7:09am. I drove to the Radisson Hotel by Main St. to ID him for sure as I couldn’t from the Broad St. Bridge (BSB) where I first saw him.

img_0012-dc img_0013-dc img_0014-dc-stretches-his-legs img_0020-dc

About the same time Donna let me know that Beauty had been to the nest box. I didn’t see her until 10 minutes later when DC flew off  and went to the nest box, then I saw Beauty fly in from the north and joined him at the nest box. A couple minutes later they flew out and Beauty came to rest on the south corner top ibeam of OCSR.

img_0021-beauty-getting-ready-to-raise-her-tail-for-dc Beauty

I was observing from the hole at this time- DC came in to mate with Beauty very fast before I could get a shot of them. He flew north and she took off while I was watching him. I followed suit and found both of them on the Kodak Office (KO) launchpad. The Beautyful one was on the southwest corner and DC on the southeast corner across from each other.

img_0024-bdc

They had their backs to me so I drove over to the west side of KO and pulled over on Verona St. to observe around 7:35am. 5 minutes later they flew off together with DC flying north and Beauty returning to the southwest corner of the KO launchpad. I checked the rest of the building for DC but he was gone and I ended up on State St. to watch Beauty.

img_0026-beauty1

A minute later Beauty flew south-I made a u-turn so I could follow her with my binocs. I thought she might go to the nest box at first but then she made a left, circled above OCSR then went into a stoop over the river and I lost sight of her behind buildings. I took a trip around downtown but couldn’t find Beauty or DC so I headed out for the Brighton Site (BS). I arrived at BS at 8:20am having just enough time to take a pic of Pigott looking down from the west end of the south side vent and then drop off the edge and stoop on a crow.

img_0028-pigott-watching-a-crow img_0029-pigott-stoops-on-a-crow

The crow took safety in a pine tree and Pigott flew up to the southwest extension roof. Just like yesterday I had to go out to the back service road to see her as she was in off the front edge where I needed a broader view of the building to find her.

img_0032-pigott-hiding-on-roof

A couple minutes later she suddenly flew off to the north and I never saw her again. After a couple unsuccessful trips around BS I left for downtown. From the BSB I spotted a bump on the southwest corner of the KO launchpad so I drove down Plymouth Ave. pulling over across from Frontier Field, the Rochester Red wings baseball stadium.

img_0034-beauty-from-plymouth-ave

This wasn’t a good spot since Beauty had her back to me so I drove around to Verona St. again and just as I got situated Beauty saw DC and scrunched down as he was approaching from the south. She got positioned with tail up as he came to rest on her back to mate.

img_0035-beauty-sees-dc-coming img_0036-beauty-ready-for-dc-to-arrive img_0037-beauty-with-tail-up-for-dc img_0038-dc-ready-for-touch-down

It was a much lengthier session than earlier on OCSR and when he was done DC flew down to the playpen netting to perch on the southwest corner right below his girl.

img_0041-bdc-after-canoodling img_0042-bdc img_0044-dc-on-netting-around-playpen

DC hung out there for a few minutes as Beauty glanced down at him now and again until he flew off at 8:58am and landed on the southeast corner of the launchpad across from his mate now.

That’s all she wrote folks-I left at 9am after seeing all 3 Rochester Peregrine Falcons with a big ole smile on my face! 🙂

Morning watch 3-22-14

Saturday, March 22nd, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

This mornings watch weather was overcast, with wind swept rain on and off and a temperature of 44 (F) 7 (C)

It took  half hour before I spotted my first falcon and that falcon was Beauty. I spotted her on the top ibeam southeast side of OCSR as I made my way back to the Broad St. Bridge (BSB) from checking Kodak Office. I drove down to the hole on Aqueduct St. for a closer view.

img_0002-beauty2 img_0003-beauty1

The Beautyful one was out of the weather a bit up there as she looked around for Dot.Ca (DC). She didn’t have to wait long as he arrived about 5 minutes later at 7:34am. She flew directly to the nest box while he went to the back of the northwest wing ledge of the Times Square building (TSB) and started eating. I can’t say if it was cached food that was already up there or if he brought it with him. In either case, it was small.

img_0008-dc3

Beauty got impatient waiting at the nest box and flew up under to the northeast wing across from DC and started whining. Seconds later she flew over to DC and he took off with his little package and went to the top ibeam southeast side of OCSR where he started eating again. Beauty also flew over there but kept her distance while he ate and went to the Radisson Hotel by Main St. to watch.

img_0021-dc-with-breakfast<DC     Beauty>img_0029-beauty

DC spent 10-15 minutes on his meal then flew off with a tiny bit of it in his talons. Beauty took off too and I watched them both fly to the nest box around 8am.

img_0032-dc1 img_0038-dc1 img_0040-nom-nom img_0052-dc-takes-off

By the time I got back over to the hole Beauty was on the base of Mercury eating and I couldn’t see DC anywhere. I was thinking that DC gave her his leftovers and that’s what she was eating. 10 minutes later Beauty flew to the nest box and  seconds later DC came shooting out with what looked like a teeny tiny morsel of food in his talons and headed east.

img_0057-beauty1 img_0065-beauty1 img_0067-beauty-leaves-mercury<Beauty  DC>img_0068-dc-leaves-nest-box

Beauty remained at the nest box and I left for the Brighton site hoping to run into Larry who had tweeted that he saw Pigott on the northwest extension.

img_0074-beauty

I arrived around 8:35am and missed Larry by a few minutes. I thought I had missed Pigott as well but on my second trip around the building I spotted her as she flew from the middle of the southwest extension roof out and around to land on the south side of the southwest extension. She wasn’t on the edge but back in on the roof a bit so I had to got out onto the service road behind the property to see more than her head!

img_0075-pigott img_0077-pigott img_0091-peekaboo-i-see-you

Miss Pigott was hanging on in the wind and looking around most likely for DC! At 9:02am Pigott flew off to the southeast. I waited about 10 minutes and just as I was starting to leave I heard the familiar echo of echupping coming from the cubby.

img_0092-pigott-is-off

So I went around to the west side and got ready to see DC shoot out of there like a cannon as he always does when their bonding sessions are over. I just barely got him in the frame as he left the area flying northbound. A few seconds later Pigott flew out to the southwest corner of the west extension.

img_0097-dc-shoots-out-of-cubby img_0099-pigott img_0101-pigott-has-something-to-say

A minute later she flew back to the roof of the southwest extension again giving me a feeling of deja vu.

img_0102-pigott-ready-to-take-off img_0103-coast-is-clear img_0104-pigott-is-off img_0106-pigott

I left for downtown thinking DC had gone there but when I arrived there was no DC that I could see and Beauty was right where I left her-perched at the nest box.

img_0109-beauty

I ended my watch at 9:30am smiling in the fact that I had seen all 3 resident Rochester Peregrine Falcons! 🙂

Morning watch 3-21-14

Friday, March 21st, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Todays starting temperature was 29 (F) -2 (C) with overcast conditions including snow showers on and off  throughout my watch

Around 7:10am while stopped at the traffic light at South Ave. and Broad St. I could see a falcon at the nest box. I reported that it was Beauty but Donna let me know it was Dot.Ca (DC)-Thanks! DC flew out and around to the back of the Times Square building (TSB) and out of view. A few minutes later I spotted Beauty under the southeast wing.

img_0006-beauty img_0014-beauty1

Beauty flew east so I went east as well, but I found nothing until making my way back to the Broad St. Bridge (BSB). Beauty was on the Mercury money bag (MMB) so I went down to the hole to observe her about 7:35am.

img_0021-beauty1 img_0022-beauty

As I was sharing space with the Beautyful one DC  flew in and was about to mate with her but changed his mind at the last second. Beauty wasn’t ready for him as he circled around to try again and so he aborted once more. You can see in the series of pics below that she didn’t get her tail up when he was ready to make his move. Be sure to click on the pics to see full version

After circling TSB, DC flew north and Beauty followed behind with me bringing up the rear. I caught up with them over at the Kodak Office (KO) tower where they were on the launchpad. She was on the southeast corner and he was on the southwest corner.

img_0040-beauty-and-dc img_0042-are-you-ready-beauty<Click it

At about 7:50am DC flew over for another attempt at copulation but once again passed by and landed on the east side then walked to the northeast corner of the launchpad.

img_0043-dc-coming-in-for-an-attempt-at-mating img_0045-first-attempt-to-mate-no-good img_0047-dc-lands-down-on-northeast-corner

At 7:57am DC successfully connected with Beauty and flew up to the cupola after copulation took place. You can see it in a video I made.

img_0050-this-attempt-was-successful-seconds-after-this-pic img_0053-beauty-and-dc-after-copulation img_0057-gazing-at-each-other<Click it-they are looking at each other-so cute

DC walked to the southwest side of the cupola only to return to the southeast side above Beauty

img_0060-hes-moved-on-cupola img_0064-dc-walks-back-to-original-spot-on-cupola

Soon after Beauty flew southwest and a couple seconds later DC followed.

img_0066-dc-watches-beauty-leave img_0067-dc-following-after-beauty-left

5 minutes later I found DC on the Wilder buildings fire escape as I landed down in the hole on Aqueduct St. Beauty was at the nest box at the time but unbeknownst to me flew over to the southwest corner of the Wilder building while I was watching DC on my camera screen. He was in hunt mode and keeping an eye on little birdies below him.

img_0070-dc-on-wilder-fire-escape img_0075-dc-she-wants-more img_0076-watching-birdies-below img_0077-i-so-wanna-catch-you-for-breakfast

DC flew to the nest box with Beauty right behind him. I imagine they did some bowing in there as I couldn’t see them from where I was stationed in the hole. Half a minute later I caught DC flying out and heading south.

img_0082-dc-exiting-nest-box img_0083-see-ya<Click it

I then went up on the BSB to confirm Beauty in the nest box.

img_0085-beauty

I thought perhaps DC went to the Brighton site (BS) since that’s the direction he flew so I went there to check. When I got there at 9am I found Canadian Geese and 3 crows who were checking the roof tops I assume for cached food that belonged to Pigott and DC. Twice in the last week I’ve witnessed crows stealing cached food at BS. Anyway, no falcon sightings so I returned to downtown and after a couple trips around with no success in finding a falcon there I ended my watch at 9:30am. And what a busy watch it was as love is in the air for our downtown falcon pair, which you must know, puts a smile on my face! 🙂

Morning watch 3-20-14

Thursday, March 20th, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

On this dark overcast morning it was 36 (F) 2 (C) with a little wind and a forecast for those winds to pick up later in the day. It rained lightly off and on with some snow mixed in

Half hour into my watch as I was returning from the east side I spotted Beauty on the top ibeam southeast side of OCSR around 7:30am. I went over to the hole to observe her.

img_0003-beauty img_0007-beauty

A few minutes later the Beautyful one flew off to the east over the river and out of view.

img_0011-beauty-takes-off

Instead of taking a ride to look for her I left to check the Brighton site (BS) at this time as I had a shortened watch due to an early appointment this morning. I arrived at BS just before 8am and didn’t see a falcon anywhere on the building until I drove out to the back service road where I wasn’t so close and had a broader view of things. That turned out to be a good call as I spotted Pigott on the southwest extension back on the roof away from the edge. I had time for 2 pics -one on the roof and one as she flew off headed south.

img_0013-pigott img_0014-pigott-is-off

I waited a couple minutes for her return but she didn’t so off to downtown for one more check I went, finding Beauty on the top ibeam southeast side of OCSR around 8:30am.

img_0015-beauty img_0020-hi-beautyful

While I was taping the river Beauty flew off and I didn’t know what direction she went so after a look around I set out to find her.Once again as I was coming from the east side of the city I could see beauty up at the nest box from the Broad St. bridge.

img_0024-beauty2 img_0026-beauty-looking-north

That’s it in a nutshell-I didn’t see Dot.Ca but I did see our 2 resident female Peregrine Falcons sending me off with a smile at 8:50am. 🙂

Wednesday Afternoon Falcon Watch – 3/19/14 – All Three Rochester Falcons Seen

Wednesday, March 19th, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

I was able to get out for a quick watch this afternoon.  When I left work, Beauty was in the nest box.  Just before I arrived downtown at 3:45 pm, she was gone.  I looked around and could not find Beauty or Dot.ca.  By this time it had started to rain.

I headed over to the BS location and found both Dot.ca and Pigott on the north side of the building.  Pigott was on a north facing window on the NW extension and Dot.ca was on the top of the north side center section of the building.

Both Dot.ca and Pigott took off.  DC headed downtown and Pigott landed on the south side of the west extension.  She vocalized by wailing softly now and then.  Pigott didn’t stay there long.  She took off and flew around the building, ending up on the northwest corner of the NW extension.

At 4:45 pm, Pigott took off again.  This time she hovered above the building, just hanging on the wind.  To me this is one of the most beautiful things to watch a Peregrine Falcon do.  She did this for about 5 minutes before heading east fast.  I believe she was either on a hunt or going off to clear out her territory.

I had to be somewhere at 5:30 pm, so I headed downtown and found Beauty tucked into the OCSR elevator shaft on the south ledge.  It’s very dark in this picture, but you can just make her out.  I’ll lighten it up too.

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

It was a balmy 34 degrees (F)  1 (C) when I stepped out to go om my morning watch-as the sun came up there were clouds blocking it with breezy conditions and some rain expected later in the day

As I was parked on Broad St. behind Xerox checking out Bausch & Lomb for Beauty I spotted a falcon come into view above Xerox just as the sun was breaking the horizon. Judging by size I’d say it was Beauty-she flew around B&L then went over and hovered right above me and Xerox on the east side.

img_0002-beauty-hovering-above-xerox img_0003-beauty-hovering

I lost sight of her and drove toward the Broad St. Bridge (BSB)-stopped at the traffic light at South Ave. and Broad St. I could see the Beautyful one on the Mercury money bag but by the time I got to the bridge and pulled over, she was gone. I didn’t see anyone in or near the nest box so I continued on with my search. Donna let me know that Beauty and Dot.Ca (DC)had been in the nest bonding earlier. Thanks my friend! After a couple trips around our fair city and no sightings I left for the Brighton site where I found Pigott at 8:10am on the southwest corner of the west extension.

img_0006-pigott img_0007-pouty-puss-pigott-cuz-dc-isnt-there-yet img_0008-shout-it-from-the-rooftop

She was mainly looking north, presumably looking for DC but she also did a little preening so she would look nice for him. 🙂 Larry pulled up for half a minute on his way to work and gave me a wave. After he left I got a tweet from him saying there were turkeys on the back service road so naturally I had to go investigate. Mr. Tom Turkey was chasing the girls and displaying his awesomeness to them when I arrived.

They ran into the woods so I went back to Pigott who was in the same place as I left her. I was glad to see that there was a small bulge in her crop meaning she had eaten. I stayed a few more minutes and then left to go back downtown.

I ended my watch at 9:05am after spending the better part of an hour driving around looking for falcons that eluded me. Not too much happening on this mornings watch but I could still smile for what I had seen-our 2 female falcons and some turkeys who were in the mood for love! 🙂

Morning watch 3-18-14

Tuesday, March 18th, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Another chilly start with a temp of  16 (F) -9 (C), calm winds, bright sunshine and blue skies

As I made my way down interstate 490 eastbound I just had to grab my camera and shoot a couple pics of the sunrise to start my watch.

img_0001-the-sun-she-is-a-rising-taken-from-490 img_0002-beautiful-sunrise Make sure to click on my pics for a full version

When I arrived downtown Beauty was in the nest box and Dot.Ca (DC) was on the well ledge north of the nest box area.  a minute later Beauty flew over to OCSR and landed on the west corner top ibeam. I saw DC next to the main cam on the north side of it and then  according to cam watcher Donna (TY) into the nest box he went. I was parked in the hole where I can’t see into the nest box so it’s always helpful to have someone watching the cams to let watchers know what’s going on up there.

img_0005-beauty Beauty watching DC at nest box

As I was looking around for DC, the Beautyful one left OCSR. I decided to go up on the Broad St. bridge where I had a broader view of things and while I was looking north I spotted a falcon fly off the west side of the Kodak Office (KO) launchpad and circle around to land on the northeast corner of the launchpad. I drove to State St. and ended up in the parking lot of Harmco plumbing supplies on the north side of KO. DC was who I saw fly to the northeast corner and to my delight Beauty was on the northwest corner with her back to me around 7:30am.

img_0016-bdc<Click itimg_0018-bdc img_0019-downtown-duo

DC flew off 5 minutes later so I drove to the west side of KO parking on Verona St. where I could see the front of Beauty. She was not seeming like she was going anywhere so I decided to go to the Brighton Site to see if DC went there.

img_0026-beauty

I landed at BS around 8:20am finding Pigott on the northwest corner of the west extension and I could hear DC in the cubby chirping.

img_0034-pigott

DC flew out and circled Pigott then back to cubby and started chupping away. 2 more times he went in and out of the cubby trying to lure her in but for some reason Pigott would not join him. She flew north out of view and he followed, then she returned and came to rest on the southwest corner of the west extension.

img_0042-pigott-you-lookin-at-me-mak

She flew off again and DC followed to the north with Pigott returning to land on the northwest corner of the west extension-DC went to the southwest corner of the southwest extension. They both did some preening and watching each other for the next 25 minutes or so.

img_0046-miss-pigott<Pigott    img_0064-dc<DC

Then it happened-just before the clock struck 9am DC flew over to Pigott and mated with her. I barely got my camera on them before it was all over getting one still and his exit from her back on video.

img_0067-dc-on-his-way-to-mate-with-pigott img_0068-stretchy-dc img_0069-got-my-mind-on-one-thing-babies img_0070-here-i-come-pigott img_0075-dc-always-gets-the-girl

DC flew north and a minute later Miss Pigott flew east out of view. When neither returned I went back downtown stopping on the BSB to look around. Beauty was on the top ibeam west corner of OCSR and left just as I was about to grab my camera. She flew to the nest box so I went down to the hole behind He’s Chinese where I could hear echupping. Could DC be in there with her?  Yes, he most certainly was as he shot out from the nest box and flew up to the northeast wing ring of the Times Square building.

img_0077-dc-exits-nest-box img_0078-dc-that-shadow-follows-me-wherever-i-go<Click it img_0085-dc-on-ts-wing-ring img_0086-dc-on-top-of-the-world

Beauty flew out right after him but I didn’t see where she went as I was following his flight up to the ring. I drove over to Irving Place, the alley behind Times Square for a different angle on DC when he turned away from me and as I looked up I noticed Beauty under the northwest wing below him.

img_0089-bdc img_0095-bdc

At 9:37am Beauty flew north and 5 minutes later DC exited as well.

img_0097-beautyful-one <Beauty>   img_0100-beauty-says-see-ya-dc

I called it a watch at 9:40am and as I was exiting downtown NCAfalcon and Donna reported DC at the nest box. Another action packed watch and sightings of all 3 resident Rochester Peregrine Falcons made for a smiley ride home. 🙂
