Morning watch 7-2-13

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

The starting temperature today was 61 (F) 16 (C) with fog and overcast conditions making it a dark morning.

When I arrived at 5:20am I couldn’t see any adults or juvies so I went searching on the east side. The fog was pretty thick at the tops of the tallest buildings so I may have just not seen Beauty or Dot.Ca (DC).

I returned to the Broad St. Bridge (BSB) where I could make out 2 juvies  up on the deck. I then took a ride up State St. to the Andrews St. Bridge to check the northern end of the territory. No adult PEFAs seen there either so I drove back to the Times Square building (TSB) area. From the hole (Aqueduct St.) I could barely make out the white of a falcon on the OCSR top ibeam south corner.

img_0008-dc1

I thought it was DC and I would find out that I was correct a little later on. Looking toward TSB I could see Baron out on the well wall. And I got a tweet from Ei that it was him up there. Thank you very much! From where I was parked next to He’s Chinese I could see between the Philipone and Times Square buildings the faint structure of the jail tower completely engulfed in fog.

At 6:05am I looked to the OCSR and DC was gone so I drove up to the BSB where I found Dan in his spot on the south side. He had just gotten there and said DC flew back behind Xerox vanishing into the fog. A minute later I spotted DC flying down river to the north behind OCSR. At 6:18am I saw him return and land on the 2nd ibeam west corner of OCSR and Dan spotted Beauty fly to the deck.

A minute later cam watcher Annette reported the kids were being fed. Thanks for your help! And Larry came by to join us before work. About a half hour later Beauty flew up to cam 4 and DC went over to the south corner and took off immediately after landing out of sight.

img_0020-beauty-on-cam-4

Larry left at this time and 25 minutes later Dan left as well at 7:09am.  I decided to check the Brighton Site leaving the Beautyful one on cam 4, 1 eyas on the wall, 1 on the deck by the wall and 1 near the nest box. For the first time in 3 or 4 days Pigott was home for me to visit with her as I arrived at 7:30am. She was on the west side of the southeast extension 2 window ledges down.

img_0025-pigott img_0027-pigott

She was watching starlings that are nesting across from where she was perched by the east end of the south side vent. A few minutes later cam watcher Campgee reported a second meal had been delivered for the kids downtown. Thanks so much! Pigott flew off to the west toward the front (north side) of the building.

img_0028-pigott-is-off

While I drove around the building to look for her she went to the south side vent west end with her back to me as I made my way to the back (south side) of the building. I love playing cat and mouse with falcons! lol

img_0039-pigott

Miss Pigott did some preening and at 8:22am she flew off, went in to a stoop over the trees to the southeast and pulled up after the small bird whipped into a tree for cover. She flew back and went to the west extension coming to rest on the southwest corner.

img_0042-pigott

I drove around to a spot where I could view her from the front on the west side.

img_0045-pigott

I stayed with her for nearly an hour and she left when I wasn’t looking. I drove around and waited for her to return but she did not so I drove back downtown. I arrived at Broad and Exchange Blvd. at 9:42am and pulled over in front of the Blue Cross Arena when I saw Beauty on the column above the nest box.

img_0050-beauty

I drove over to the hole to watch and I found DC on the 2nd ibeam south corner of OCSR.

img_0053-dc-pulls-on-a-feather img_0054-dc

DC was preening so I switched my attention to Beauty who was watching young  Baron below her on the well wall.

I drove up to the BSB to look for Rosetta and Voyager but they must have been laying down. There were 2 workers in scaffolding on the east side (river side) of the Thomson Reuters building. All was quiet and I chose to end my watch at 10am. Tomorrow I will start my official fledge watch schedule of 5:20am until someone relieves me-most likely Brian at 2pm. I left for home having seen 6 PEFAs on my watch 3 adults and 3 juvies-if that isn’t reason to smile I don’t know what is! 🙂

Morning watch 7-1-13

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

It was a dark morning due to cloud cover with rain in the forecast. The starting temperature was 66 (F) 19 (C) with a breeze.

As I arrived in the hole at 5:22am I could see a couple kids up on deck and for the first time in quite a while I spotted Dot.Ca (DC) before Beauty-he was on the south corner top ibeam of OCSR.

img_0001-2-kids img_0008-dc

Baron was already running on the well wall and flapping his wings when he got to the very end. I thought since it was a little breezy out that he might get a boost and take wing but I don’t think he’s quite ready yet. At 5;37am I noticed Beauty on the deck feeding someone. I got a tweet a minute later from Campgee confirmimg it. Thanks!

At 5:47am Beauty flew north and DC flew to the ledge under the southeast wing.

img_0016-dc

A few minutes later I spotted Beauty appear from behind Widows Walk and fly over to the Times Square Building (TSB) circling it twice before vanishing behind it. Baron was out on the well wall doing his thing.

img_0021-baron img_0023-baron img_0025-baron-talking-to-mom-on-cam-1

I left at this time to look for Pigott at the Brighton site but once again I was too late-she was already gone. So I returned to downtown about 6:44am and joined LarryO on the Broad St. Bridge (BSB). We could see all 3 eyases but no adults.

img_0028-the-3-falconeers Click it

About 10 minutes later Beauty flew to the deck with food but none of the kids rushed her so we thought they weren’t interested. Larry brought up the livestream on his phone and we could hear them squawking up a storm so we knew then that they most certainly were interested. Beauty started feeding and Baron made his way off the well wall to join them.

A few minutes later I noticed DC on the top ibeam south corner of OCSR. And when she was done feeding her kids the Beautyful one went to cam 1 to perch.

img_0035-dc img_0037-beauty-sticking-close <Beauty is there but you must click it to see her lol

At 7:12 am DC flew off OCSR and made his way up to the southwest wing ring-a place I haven’t seen him in a very long time. He’s the only PEFA I’ve ever seen on one of those. He switched to the northeast wing ring a minute later.

img_0038-dc img_0039-dc-on-top-of-the-world

He stayed up there for 10 minutes looking down at Baron I believe who was on the well wall flapping on and off. Larry left at this time. I saw a couple workers on the scaffolding on the Thomson Reuters roof. Surprisingly enough neither adult went rushing over to antagonize them. Lucky for them! I went down to the hole by He’s Chinese at 7:35am to watch Baron on the well wall and Beauty on cam 1 who was also keeping an eye on our bold young tiercel.

img_0044-hi-beautyful img_0048-baron img_0052-scratch-that-itch

DebbieH stopped by on her way to work and was getting a big kick out of Baron. She left after a few minutes and I called it a watch a little after 8am. I must say Mr. Baron is making me smile a lot with his running abilities-he really motors down that well wall! 🙂

A Weekend of Falcon Watching – Baron Makes it to the Well Wall – 6/29 & 6/30/13

Monday, July 1st, 2013

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

Here are some pics from my weekend Falcon Watches.  On Saturday, I was joined by Watchers Dana, Lou and Joyce.  Today, Sunday, I was joined by Dana and Lou.

The weather both days was outstanding.  Warm and Sunny with a hint of a breeze in the afternoon.

There is a lot of activity at the nest box.  All three eyases; Baron, Rosetta & Voyager have been spreading their wings and flapping wildly.  This is how they exercise their wings for those first flights.

Saturday, June 29, 2013

The highlight of Saturday was when both Beauty and Dot.ca started kakking.  Both took to the sky and were going after something on top of the Cross Rds Bldg, we think.  It lasted quite a long time before Beauty finally settled on the main cam and Dot.ca on the OCSR.  During that time, the eyases were motionless.  We have seen them working on the north end of the Cross Rds Bldg, but we could not see anything yesterday.

Here are some pics from my afternoon/evening Falcon Watch on Saturday.

Saturday evening, Kathy O and I checked up on Pigott.  We found her on the SE corner of the East Ext.  We stayed there watching for about an hour before leaving Pigott to enjoy a most beauty Summer evening.  She was also seen by Joyce both Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday – June 30, 2013

Another absolutely gorgeous afternoon.  I do love these summer weekends!

The highlight of today was seeing Baron make it out to the well wall on the north side of the nest box.  Every year the eyases make it out onto this wall, which gives them more room to flap their wings and run.  Rosetta stepped down onto the wall for a few seconds and then hopped back up to the nest box platform.  She’s not ready, but I have no doubt that both Rosetta and Voyager will soon join their brother Baron on the wall.

Here are some pictures from my afternoon watch with Dana and Lou.

Every day is going to bring these young eyases closer to their fledges or first flights.  Happy Monday!
