Morning Falcon Watch 1-5-16

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

A cold start with a temperature of 14 (F) -11 (C) and overcast skies

When I made my way out to East Ridge Rd. to check the north end of Seneca Towers (ST) I was happy to see both Billie and Seth. She was on the northwest corner below the railing with her back top me and he was in his favorite spot on the north window ledge keeping an eye on her as usual.

The sun made a brief appearance then disappeared back behind the curtain of clouds. I shared space with them for about 10 minutes then I moved along to downtown. I had no luck finding Dot.ca (DC) today but I did find Beauty up in the OCSR elevator shaft on the south ledge. I’m so glad they have that to shelter themselves from bad weather.

I left the Beautyful one at 8:30am and headed over to the Medley Centre (MC). As I approached from the north I spotted a falcon on a light pole with its back to me at the west end of the mall near the Target store. I drove around to the south parking lot to face it but it had flown off before I could get there. It looked big so it was probably Big Frankie. I waited to see if she would return and when she didn’t I  checked St. Ann’s Home to no avail.

Instead of going home after seeing nobody at ST I took a ride over to Seneca Park to check on the birds in the pond. I was surprised to see it frozen over as we’ve only had a couple could days here. At any rate, the gang was all there hanging out in the area that is kept open for them.

Most of them were sleeping with their heads tucked into their feathers but a few ducks were splashing around in the middle and one did a dance for me. I just love how the water slides right off of them.

I ended my watch smiling at 9:45am after seeing 4 Peregrine Falcons and some ducks, gulls and geese, oh my! 🙂

Frigid morning Falcon Watch/Winter arrives 1-4-16

Monday, January 4th, 2016

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

It was blustery and snowing lightly when I headed out this morning with a temperature of 13 (F) -11 (C) and it went down to 10 (F)  -12 (C) by the end of my watch. Winter has most assuredly, arrived in Rochester, NY but we had a great run of pleasant temperatures thru the first half of the winter months

I was surprised when I looked up at the south end of Seneca Towers from Seth Green Dr. and saw a falcon on the south window ledge. As I drove around to St. Paul St. to ID who it was, I thought to myself that it made good sense to be there, as the building blocked the cold north wind there. It was Seth who was up there looking around his territory.

img_0002-seth1img_0003-seth-looking-for-his-girlimg_0004-seth

I left him after a few minutes as the snow was blowing in my face. As I was turning onto the Broad St. bridge from Exchange Blvd. I saw Dot.ca (DC) fly over the Philipone building heading north. I had a hunch on where he was going and sure enough when I went over to the Radisson Hotel to check the OCSR elevator shaft I spotted him on the north ledge.

img_0006-dc-whiter-than-snowimg_0009-dc-behind-that-blowing-snowimg_0011-dc-out-of-elements-in-man-cave

DC is whiter than snow, otherwise I wouldn’t have seen him thru the blowing snow!! This is one instance I’ll refer to him as Whitey. I left him to hang out in his man cave to look for Beauty. As I made my way over to the east side of the river to Elm St. I saw the Beautyful one fly off one of the northeast corners of Legacy Tower and head east as I was making a K-turn. I was unable to find her again or any other falcons at the Medley Centre or Seneca Towers. I was happy to see 3 of our Rochester PEFA’s on such a blustery day and so I ended my watch at 9:30am smiling! 🙂

Morning Falcon Watch 1-3-16

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Dark, overcast and windy with a temperature of 35 (F) 2 (C)

I was graced with the presence of Seth at Seneca Towers (ST) this morning-he was in his spot on the north window ledge as I looked from East Ridge Rd.

img_0002-seth

For the 3rd or 4th day in a row I found Beauty on the top I-beam southeast side of OCSR from the Broad St. bridge. She had her back to me so I elected to go over to the Radisson Hotel by Main St. where I could see the front of her and check the OCSR elevator shaft for Dot.ca (DC). He wasn’t up there.

img_0012-beauty1img_0014-beauty1img_0021-beauty1

I left the Beautyful one preening around 8:30am to look for DC-I didn’t find him, so I left for the Brighton site (BS). I found no PEFA’s at BS and after I went and walked Bella for Jeanne I headed to the Medley Centre (MC) via downtown. A quick stop to take a pic of both Beauty and DC together on the top I-beam southeast side of OCSR.

Then, as I was crossing the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge on the way to MC, I noticed a falcon on the northwest corner of ST below the railing so I stopped for a quick look. I believe it was Billie with her back to me but can’t say for sure.

img_0027-billie-i-think

That was all she wrote-when I got to MC there was no falcon there. I ended my watch there at about 10:30am smiling from having seen 3, possibly 4 Rochester Peregrine Falcons! 🙂

Morning Falcon Watch/4 PEFA’s seen 1-2-16

It was almost as dark this morning as yesterday with similar conditions -light snow, wind, overcast and a temperature of 28 (F) -2 (C)

I was parked at the north end of my parking lot at Seneca Towers and so I looked up before getting into my car-I could see Seth in his spot on the north end window ledge.

img_0003-seth-looking-over-his-territory

I drove over to East Ridge Road to observe him-he spotted something a couple minutes after I got over there, then Seth dropped off into a swan dive toward the river gorge.

img_0008-sethimg_0009-seth-spots-somethingseth-taking-off

I left for downtown at that point and as I was coming back from checking the east side of the river I spotted a falcon under the northeast wing of the Times Square building from Broad and Clinton Ave. As I checked from the hole parking lot I thought it was Dot.ca (DC) with his back to me-from every angle I checked I couldn’t get a good look at him.

img_0012-beautyimg_0013-little-peeker

Only when I drove over to check the OCSR elevator shaft was I able to decide that it was Beauty over on Times Square because I could see the white of DC on the north side ledge.

img_0017-dc

As I was looking at DC thru my little LCD camera screen the Beautyful one flew into the frame and just as she was about to land next to DC he flew off to the east and I never saw him again.

Beauty quickly turned her back to me so I left for the Medley Centre at that time around 8:45am. Larry reported at this time that he had a falcon over at the Brighton location so that saved me a trip over there.

img_0019-beautyimg_0021-beauty

On my way over to the Medley Centre I spotted Seth on the north window of Seneca Towers and Billie on the northwest corner below the railing. I pulled onto the off ramp to take a pic of them from East Ridge Rd.

img_0023-billie-and-seth<Click

The only sightings I had over at MC were a couple gulls flying over-there were no other birds around. I ended my watch there at 9:30am after seeing 4 of our resident Rochester Peregrine Falcons which, as you know puts a smile on my face every time! 🙂

Happy New Year! Falcon Watch – January 1, 2016

Saturday, January 2nd, 2016

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

When I arrived downtown, a little early, for the 2016 Rochester Falcons Toast, it was 29 degrees (F) and snowing.  I wanted to look for Beauty and Dot.ca before everyone arrived.  It didn’t take me long to find them.  I was not the first one to arrive for the toast. Beauty and Dot.ca beat me!  They were on the south side, top IBeam of OCSR, side-by-side.

They remained there during the toast, which lasted about an hour.  They were there when we left.  🙂

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

New Year’s morning Falcon Watch 1-1-16

Friday, January 1st, 2016

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

It was a very dark morning with light snow, a bit of a breeze and a temperature of  33(F) 1 (C)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I saw neither Billie or Seth at Seneca Towers (ST) this morning-perhaps there was too much partying last night. When I arrived on the Broad St. bridge downtown I spotted Beauty on the top I-beam southeast side of OCSR. I went down to the hole parking lot to observe.

img_0006-beautyimg_0009-beauty

She started preening so I knew she wasn’t going anywhere for a bit so I set out to look for Dot.ca (DC). I wasn’t able to find him so after checking to see that the Beautyful one was still on OCSR I left to check the Brighton site (BS).

img_0011-beautyimg_0014-beauty

Upon arriving at BS I found the unbanded PEFA there on the southeast extension below the tree on the 2nd window ledge down.

img_0016-bs-birdimg_0020-bs-falconimg_0022-peeking-thru-the-snow

After a few minutes this falcon stood up and walked across to the opposite end of the ledge as the half snow/half sleet pelted us both.

img_0024-going-to-opposite-side-of-ledgeimg_0025-on-the-moveimg_0027-on-the-other-end-of-window-ledge

I moved over too, so I could get a full last shot of this falcon before moving along.

img_0028-b-bye-whoever-you-are

On my way thru downtown to check on the Medley Centre over in Irondequoit I stopped long enough to see that Beauty was still on OCSR. I didn’t see one bird of any kind at the mall or Seneca Towers so I ended my watch at 9am after seeing 2 Peregrine Falcons, and by the way, I was smiling!! 🙂
