Sunday Evening Falcon Watch – Dot.ca and the Crows – 6/1/14

June 1st, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P. (6:30 to 8:30 pm)

The gorgeous evenings continue.  It was 77 degrees (F) with wispy clouds.  The water level on the river has gone down quite a bit and many of the logs that had been caught by the Main St Bridge were gone.

It was my day to check out the BS location, where we used to watch Pigott and Dot.ca.  It was very quiet.  Only small birds were active here.  No falcons seen or heard.

When I arrived downtown, I found fellow falcon watcher Dan S.  He was sitting in his chair on the north side of the bridge.  This was the shady side for awhile.  Here was our view.

Just before I arrived, Dan had seen Beauty fly out of the nest box and out to the jail communication tower, south of the Times Square Bldg.

Beauty remained there for quite awhile, before taking off and flying back towards the Times Square Bldg (TSB).  She landed on Camera #1 aka Pan Cam.

At 7:30 pm, Dot.ca flew in with food.  He went directly to the nest box and Beauty followed.  She took the food and carried it out to the base of the Mercury statue.  She landed on the north side, where we could not see her. Dot.ca followed and landed on the northeast side of the base of the Mercury statue.

A few moments later, Beauty took off and returned to the nest box to feed the eyases.  Many thanks to Rfalconcam Watcher Ei for verifying that Beauty was in the nest box.  Dot.ca remained where he was.

Since the shade had reached the south side of the bridge, it was time to move.  This is where Dan likes to watch from.  Here is our view from the south side of the Broad St Bridge.

We could see Beauty on the nest box perch.  She had finished feeding the eyases.  Dot.ca remained, very alert, on the base of the Mercury Statue.

All was quiet, until the Crows flew over.  Two of them landed on the Lincoln First Bldg, but they were not what got Dot.ca’s attention.  It was a low flying Crow that he went after, catching up with it on the left side of the B&L bldg.  Dot.ca hit it hard, feathers flying and caught it in his talons for just a second or two before releasing it.  That was one very lucky Crow.  We saw it fly off very low to the south.  Dot.ca returned to the Times Square Bldg and landed on the northeast wing ledge, above the nest box.  Here are the two Crows that landed on the Lincoln First Tower.

For the rest of our watch, Beauty remained on Camera #1 and Dot.ca went into hunt mode.

Dan and I called it a watch a little after 8:00 pm.

After Dan left, I pulled up closer to the Times Square Bldg for a quick look before heading home.  I was checking out Beauty on Camera #1, when Lisa McK pulled up behind me.  While I was chatting with Lisa, Dot.ca took off from the Times Square Bldg and headed south.  He was either on Crow Patrol or on a hunt.  I said my goodbyes to Lisa and ended my watch (for real! 🙂 at 8:30 pm.  Goodnight everyone!

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Today was a carbon copy of yesterday 50 (F) 10 (C) and sunny

I spotted Beauty on cam 1 as I crossed the Broad St. Bridge (BSB) heading toward Times Square (TSB). When I turned down to the hole I heard the familiar sound of Dot.Ca (DC) chirping. I looked up and saw Beauty chasing DC and doing some squawking of her own. She was on his tail feathers as they flew north over the river and disappeared. I was thinking maybe Beauty was mad that he didn’t bring food-she loves to keep those kids filled up. Around 6:38am DC landed on cam 1.

img_0004-dc-on-cam-1 img_0005-dc-rousing

A few minutes later Beauty flew in and knocked DC off of cam 1 and took his place and DC flew over to the Mercury money bag (MMB).

img_0008-beauty-after-knocking-dc-off-cam-1 img_0011-dc-on-mmb

I went over to the parking lot next to the TSB to get a better angle on Beauty and where I could also see DC over on Mercury.

img_0015-beauty img_0023-hand-signal img_0028-beauty-says-power-to-the-falcons

At first the Beautyful one was gaping a lot but she soon stopped and some scratching was  included in between looking around. DC meanwhile, was doing some preening over on the money bag. They both disappeared while I wasn’t watching and as I made my way up to the BSB Donna texted me that Beauty was at the nest. Thanks!I couldn’t see her so I started watching the log removal down in the river below the Main St. bridge. They had made a lot of progress since yesterday morning with that.

img_0037-genesee-brewery-and-high-falls-in-background img_0038-making-good-progress img_0039-latching-on img_0040-gotcha

I gave a glance up at the nest box and caught a glimpse of Beauty perched on the front ledge preening.

img_0041-beauty-preening-at-nest-box

Once again while I was off getting coffee DC delivered food as reported by Donna (TY) and when I got to the hole around 8am DC was on the top ibeam west corner of OCSR.

img_0044-dc img_0045-dc

DC flew off at 8:09 am or so and Beauty took his place there around 8:15am Beauty flew west fast and DC appeared on cam 1. Larry joined me at this time for a short time.

img_0048-beauty<Beauty>img_0049-beauty img_0054-dc<DC

Next thing I knew DC was landing on the deck and going into the nest box. Beauty was on cam 1 now. I had reported the opposite and both Donna and Campgee let me know. Thanks ladies!

img_0055-dc img_0057-beauty

Larry left and I decided to end my watch as well around 8:30am. I drove out of downtown smiling as I usually do after sharing space with our Rochester Peregrine Falcons! 🙂

Last Day of May – Saturday Afternoon Falcon Watch – 5/31/14

June 1st, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

What a beautiful afternoon it turned out to be.  Sunshine, blue sky and temps in the 70’s.  After our long, hard winter, these days are so welcome.

I met Kathy O down on Aqueduct St aka “the hole”.  The Broad St Bridge was full.  Dot.ca was up on Camera #1 aka the Pan Cam.

We looked around for Beauty, but could not find her.  The tree removal that MAK spoke about in her morning report was no where near complete.  There are a lot of trees to clear out from the south side of the Main St bridge.

Dot.ca flew from Camera #1 to the Main Camera.  Beauty came in with food and entered the nest box to feed the eyases.  Dot.ca moved back over to Camera #1.

After feeding the eyases, Beauty flew to the base of Mercury to cache the leftovers.

After caching the food, Beauty returned to the Times Square Bldg, landing on Camera #1.  Dot.ca had taken off while we were watching Beauty.

He wasn’t gone too long.  He had been out on a hunt, and he brought back prey with very white wings.  A white pigeon?  There were quite a few that I have seen around the city.

Dot.ca flew around, circling a few times before passing Beauty and entering the nest box.  Joyce, who had been watching the cameras, reported that one eyas was still hungry and Dot.ca was feeding it.

After awhile, Joyce reported that Beauty flew into the nest box and took the prey from Dot.ca.  He flew to the west end of the OCSR (First Federal Bldg) top Ibeam.  She took the leftovers to the base of the Mercury statue and ate a little bit.

After eating, Beauty took off with the food and flew back to the Times Square Bldg, landing on the nest box platform, where she ate a little more.  It is important for her to eat and keep her strength up.

Beauty then took off again, heading north.  She cached the food somewhere and returned, landing on Camera #1.  Dot.ca returned and landed on top of the Times Square Bldg (TSB) on the southeast wing ledge.

That’s where they remained for a long time.  Both adults had fed a bit and the 4 eyases had been fed twice.

We were joined by Dick, a new watcher today.  He has been watching the falcons, usually from the library and Main St.  We sure do welcome anyone that would like to come downtown and help with the watch.  Especially during the fledge watch.

Just as we were getting ready to leave, Dot.ca flew to the west end of the top Ibeam on OCSR.  A few moments later, Beauty joined him there and they had a little chat.  All was quiet and peaceful.  It was time to end our watch.  Goodnight everyone!

Morning watch 5-31-14

May 31st, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

It was another sunny morning with a starting temp of 50 (F) 10 (C)

Yesterday afternoon I saw Veteran fly off t he Veterans Bridge going east and this morning the female 67/AR flew past my window several times wailing.

When I arrived downtown this morning for my watch I found Beauty under the northeast wing of Times Square (TSB). She was looking north-most likely waiting for Dot.Ca (DC) to deliver breakfast for the family. Beauty also looked down toward the nest box a few times as well. I watched from the hole parking lot.

img_0002-beauty2 img_0016-beauty img_0018-looking-down-at-nest img_0019-beauty-spots-something

The Beautyful one suddenly flew down to the nest at 6:52am and then back out across to the OCSR building squawking as she landed on the top ibeam west side next to DC who had food. He didn’t let her have it there so she screamed at him some more-he then flew off followed closely by Beauty. A mid air food exchange took place over the Philippone building before DC flew to cam 1 and Beauty to the nest box to feed the kids.

img_0028-dc2 img_0029-dc-rouses<DC

Less than 5 minutes later DC flew to the top ibeam west corner of OCSR.

img_0033-dcClick on my pics for full version

DC turned his back to me so I went over to State St. to observe him and on the way I discovered Main St. was blocked off  for the annual clean up of the log jam below the Main St. bridge. The Broad St. Bridge was getting filled up for  graduation ceremony of Monroe Community College at the Blue Cross Arena and also an event at the Rochester Convention Center. A busy downtown this morning!

img_0035-dc3 img_0036-main-st-blocked-at-state-st img_0040-trucks-ready-to-haul-logs-off

While I was gone getting coffee DC left OCSR and I could see Beauty on cam 1-as I got back to the hole dhe flew down to the nest box around 7:40am. I went to the Andrews St. bridge looking for DC and spotted him on the 2nd arm of the Frontier Communications Tower (FCT).

img_0042-beauty img_0043-dc<Click it

I drove to Fitzhugh St. to check out DC but he left before I got there. I returned to the hole and decided to walk down to Aqueduct Park to check out the log removal. To my surprise Larry and his dog Harold were down there so we watched together.

img_0044-crane-ready-to-pull-out-logs img_0047-this-will-take-a-while img_0049-big-one img_0053-up-up-and-away

At 8:07am I received word from Donna that Beauty left the nest and that DC was now in there and a few minutes later she reported Beauty on cam 1. I could see Beauty thru an opening in the trees at the park. Thanks for your help Donna!

img_0057-sign img_0060-from-aqueduct-park

Larry and Harold left and I was ready to call it a watch myself as it was getting very busy on the ground. It was however, all quiet up in falcon land as I passed thru the hole with Beauty on cam 1 I had to smile about that! 🙂

After a Long Feeding, Beauty & Dot.ca Stay Nearby – Friday Evening Falcon Watch – 5/30/14

May 30th, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

Another beautiful evening in Downtown Rochester, NY, again with temps near 70 degrees (F).  My 1 1/2 hour watch (6:30 – 8:00 pm) was shared with fellow Falcon Watcher Kathy O.

Before I left home, Beauty had been in the middle of a 45 minute feeding at the nest box.  When I arrived, Dot.ca was on the ledge just above the nest box on the Times Square Bldg.  Kathy said that Dot.ca had also brought food to the nest box, but the eyases crops were full by then.  So, he cached it on Widows Walk before landing on the ledge above the nest box.  The sound of bag pipes and drums  filled the air.  They were playing outside the Convention Center, on the other side of the river.  My dad and I loved to listen to bag pipe music!

Beauty finished feeding and cached the remainder of the meal she was feeding the eyases on the base of Mercury and then returned to the Times Square Bldg landing on Camera #1 (aka Pan Cam).

Dot.ca took off and chased a couple birds around the other side of the Wilder Bldg.  He missed what he was after and landed on the south side of OCSR (First Federal Bldg), 2nd IBeam down from the top.

By 8:00 pm, it was getting busy due to something going on at the Blue Cross Arena aka Rochester War Memorial.  All was peaceful and quiet.  We left Beauty on Camera #1 and Dot.ca on OCSR guarding their eyases.  It was time to go.  Goodnight all!

It was a chilly start with a temperature of 46 (F) 8 (C) with mostly sunny blue skies

When I arrived downtown Dot.Ca (DC) was on cam 1 and Donna informed me that Beauty had just brought in a BIG breakfast for the kids. Thanks D! Most likely DC delivered it to her as he was napping on and off-obviously tired from hunting!

img_0001-dc-on-cam-1 img_0006-sleepy-head Click on my pics for full version

I viewed him from the hole parking lot by He’s Chinese. DC did some stretching in between snoozing and standing guard over his precious family.

img_0015-dc img_0018-stretch-it-all-out img_0019-speed-skater img_0021-fantail

At 7:17am DC spread his wings flapped a couple times and lifted off of cam 1 heading northeast. He looked like daddy long legs on the take off! lol

img_0026-dc-ready img_0028-set img_0030-go

DC had flown over to OCSR top ibeam west corner and stayed just a few minutes before flying to the deck and into the nest box. Beauty made her appearance on cam 1. She too, snoozed  in between looking around the area.

img_0035-dc2 img_0036-beauty img_0038-beauty img_0039-on-watch img_0042-sleeping-beauty

At 7:37am DC flew out the nest box right over to the 3rd ibeam south corner of OCSR and started watching prey birds down below him while scratching a little too. At 7:48am Beauty went down to the nest box and hung out with the eyasses til 9am and I would not see her again on my watch.

img_0058-hi-buddy img_0060-hunt-mode img_0070-hey-you-down-there img_0072-hi-mak

DC poohed a little bullet and at 8:14am flew off OCSR heading southwest.

img_0073-a-little-pooh-bullet img_0075-we-have-lift-off img_0076-whitey-in-flight img_0077-dc-on-the-down-swing

While scoping out the territory from the Andrews St. bridge I spotted a bump on the Frontier Communications Tower. I drove over to Plymouth Ave. and found DC tucked up under the platform on the west side of the tower in hunt mode around 8:30am.

img_0081-dc

The back lighting was horrible and the bright sun was in my eyes so I went to Church St. for a different angle but DC was gone when I got there. I left to check near the Times Square area but never got there because I spotted DC from State St. on the top ibeam of OCSR near the west corner with his back to me.

img_0088-dc1 img_0089-whitey-with-a-heart

I stayed til 9am and called it a watch with a smile! 🙂

Lots of Activity This Evening! Thursday Evening Falcon Watch – 5/29/14

May 29th, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

The weather was a bit nicer this evening than it was yesterday.  Temps in the 60’s (F) and the sun finally made an appearance after a cloudy day.

Since the Broad St Bridge was busy, I ended up down on Aqueduct St, aka the hole.  From there, I could see Beauty up on top of Camera #1, aka Pan Cam.

Kathy O joined me and let me know that Dot.ca was on the base of the Mercury statue.  Beauty entered the nest box.  Dot.ca must have had food, because he flew up to the nest box platform and Beauty came out to meet him.  It looked like a food exchange.

Larry O then joined us, telling us that there was a falcon on Mercury.  We could still see Dot.ca on OCSR, so we went over to check it out.  Beauty was on the heal of the Mercury statue.  We had missed her coming out of the nest box.

While we were chatting and Kathy was giving Harold (Larry’s dog) a few treats, Beauty flew over us and landed on the well wall just below the pan cam.

Larry checked the live streaming feed on his phone and we could not see Beauty on any of the cameras.  Certainly the eyases could not see her there either.  Sneaky girl.  lol

After awhile, Beauty took off and flew towards the nest box, landing on Camera 4, which is on the left side.

Morning watch 5-29-14

May 29th, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

It felt chilly to me this morning at 53 degrees (F) 12 (C) with dark overcast conditions

It took about 20 minutes before I had my first falcon sighting this morning from the hole-it was Beauty on the west corner top ibeam of OCSR. Both Donna and Campgee let me know that she wasn’t in the nest box. Thanks ladies!

img_0002-beauty1<Click on my pics to see full version

At 6:56am the Beautyful one stooped down toward the river where I lost sight of her behind buildings. A minute or so later she was on cam 1.

img_0007-beauty-takes-off-to-get-food-from-dc img_0008-beauty-has-dc-in-her-sights img_0013-beauty img_0015-what-do-you-see-girl

Beauty stretched her wings and did some scratching and looking around-you know, her usual and then she flew off at 7:08am and I lost her behind the Philippone building. I went in search of and got word from Donna (TY) that Beauty had food in the nest so I returned to the hole and found Dot.Ca (DC) under the southeast wing. I assume that DC brought food to Beauty during this time.

img_0017-stretch img_0018-beauty img_0020-take-off <Beauty

img_0022-dc img_0023-dc img_0028-dc-all-foofed-up<DC

DC flew off to the northeast and I went looking for him-all these events took place in a matter of minutes of each other. From State St. I spotted DC on the top ibeam of the OCSR building right next to the west corner.

img_0032-dc img_0040-dc

DC stayed there for the next 40 minutes or so looking toward Times Square and occasionally preening. At 8:01am DC dropped off the ledge and went into a stoop immediately going down the northwest face of OCSR toward the river. I lost sight of him behind the Rochester Plaza Hotwl.

img_0042-dc-dives-off-into-instant-stoop-formation

When he didn’t come back I drove north to look for him. As I was checking Kodak Office Donna reported DC was at the nest box and then he left. Thanks again! On my way back I discovered Beauty on the top ibeam west corner of OCSR from State St.

img_0043-hi-beauty

I left for the hole to view the front of Beauty as she had her back to me and I discovered DC on the main cam.

img_0046-dc img_0055-beauty

I shared space with them until 8:30am when I decided to end my watch as they had things covered with Beauty on OCSR and DC preening on the main cam. It’s good to see them both out and about more now that the eyasses can keep themselves warm. This falcon family makes me smile! 🙂

Hunting, Feeding, Flying and Guarding! Tuesday Evening Falcon Watch – 5/27/14

May 27th, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

Another beautiful evening with temps near 70 degrees (F).  When I arrived downtown at approximately 6:00 pm, I joined Kathy O on the Broad St Bridge.  Dot.ca was on guard duty on Camera #1, aka Pan Cam.

We lost sight of Beauty when she flew behind the Times Square Bldg. (TSB).  The next time we saw her, she was heading in from the east and she was carrying prey.  Dot.ca took off and joined her, both landing on the nest box platform.  Beauty entered the nest box to feed the eyases and Dot.ca remained on the northeast corner of the nest box platform.  This is all I got of Beauty as she flew over us carrying the prey.

Morning watch 5-27-14

May 27th, 2014

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Today the starting temperature was 66 warm degrees (F)  19 (C) with a breeze and partly cloudy skies

Beauty was with the eyasses in the nest box when I left for downtown. I got a tweet from Annette (TY) that she was feeding them as I arrived on the Broad St. Bridge (BSB) at 6:15am. Dot.Ca (DC) was on the Mercury money bag (MMB) so I assume he delivered food to Beauty.

img_0013-hi-handsome

DC left Mercury when I wasn’t looking and ended up under the northeast wing of the Times Square building (TSB). I went to the hole parking lot to watch.

At 6:33am DC flew off going into a rocket fast stoop toward the Blue Cross Arena (BCA) where I lost him behind the Philippone building. He soon resurfaced with a catch and flew to the deck by the main cam with it and started pulling out feathers.

Beauty flew out a couple minutes later and landed on the base of Mercury while DC went into the nest box.

The Beautyful one didn’t stay long before flying over to cam 1 to supervise DC with their kids. She napped more than she supervised. lol

She was a regular sleeping Beauty up there on cam 1. DC flew out and over to the MMB around 6:45am. I was parked next to the BCA on Exchange Blvd. so I could see both Beauty on cam 1 and DC on Mercury. Beauty woke up long enough to do some stretching.

DebbieH stopped by to share space with the falcons and I and at 7:27am DC flew to the main cam and now we had both parents watching closely over their family.

After Debbie left for work I went over to the hole,  Beauty flew down to the nest box while I was tweeting as reported top me by Donna. She also said the kids were running around in the nest box as dad DC watched from the main cam. Thanks! I think DC was trying to direct his family as he did a bunch of hand signals.

Beauty flew out of the nest box at 8:07am flying right over my head and out of view on her way to the OCSR building. I found her on the top ibeam west corner with her back to me. DC flew down to the nest box a minute later.

I drove to State St. across from the Rochester Plaza Hotel to see Beauty from the front as she preened, stretched and roused.

At just about 8:45am Beauty flew northwest and I opted to end my watch.

Tomorrow I will be going to Toronto with Joyce  for the Quest and O’Connor site bandings so I won’t be doing a morning watch. You know the only thing that would keep me from a morning watch is a falcon watch elsewhere or leaving town! lol I was very happy to spend some time watching Beauty today as she hasn’t been out from the nest box in the morning since the eggs hatched but for only a glimpse-this made me smile! 🙂
