A quick additional report 6/28 jeanne

Monday, June 28th, 2010

I wasn’t on an official fledge but wanted to just add a few things. We had many watchers tonight including many passersby.

Callidora remains on the Wilder building tonight. She would walk and flap on various parts of the building but did not attempt another flight. There are some little finches and other little birds on that building and Callidora was walking to them! She also was looking down the fire escape at little birds! Jemison flew to the Crossroads building which is across the street from Calli. At one point, they were each on a corner of their respective buildings!

The most impressive– Jemison, Archer and Beauty were all in the air doing some great flying. And Beauty is trying to keep a rein on Jemison. She corrales him back to times square through close flying and some stooping on him!

No doubt Beauty and Archer have Callidora in their sight.

Falcon Watch 06/28/10 2:00 – 5:00 pm –> Callidora Fledges

Most of the watch was standard. However the last bit was most exciting.

Basically, Jemison flew from the box to the south east corner, as he did before.

However, Callidora became very excited to be with Jemison. Still at the box, Callidora started fanning. Thinking she was ready she took that step out into the air. However, things went to hell in a handbasket quickly. Instead of continuing across the gap to join Jemison, she quickly dipped to the left, carrying her out over Exchange St.

I was yelling how it was Callidora that was flying because all us watchers had spent the day discussing how Callidora would probably wait until Wednesday. No such luck.

As Callidora headed over Broad St, Archer and Beauty took off from their Time Square perches and headed after her. Even tho’ a building blocked my view of the last bit of her flight, I had a clear view of her heading towards the Wilder Bldg. I was confident that she landed on the roof.

Beauty landed on the fire escape of the Wilder Bldg. Archer kept circling overhead, clearly focused on Wilder. In the interim all thought of Jemison was lost until we had sighted Callidora.

Archer returned to Times Square. Jemision finally poked his head up on the south side. Beauty remained at Wilder. I headed down Broad to Exchange to get a look at the west side of the Wilder Bldg. Once I had crossed the street, I could see Callidora on the ledge on the west side. She was safe there.

Based on past experience, I felt Callidora would be all right. A & B will watch over her. They will bring her food until she can summon the strength to return. It may be a day or two, but she’ll get back.

When I left, Carol P, Jeanne and ?Madge? were on Exchange, looking up at Callidora.

She is in good hands – in the air, on the roof and on the ground.

From Lou

Dana and I were on official watch this morning. We saw a lot flying by the adults and there was at least one feeding. Jemison did her hop-flights across the ledges of the building a few times today, but never really fledged off the building during the day. Callidora did a lot of flapping and practicing too! I got a few interesting shots and have included them in the attached album (click on the falcon pic to see this album). I also included another album of some ‘fun’ shots of watchers and other various things in the city from this weekend. (click on the below pic.)

Fledge Watch 6/26, 6/27 9 to noon

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Watcher Suzanne
Arrived about 8:25 am all four were on Times Square Building
9:15 Beauty flew off to Mercury, then to Wilder
9:36 Jemison “flew” from the nest box area to the south corner of TSB.
9:45 Beauty brought food in to Callidora at the nest box. Jemison remained on the south corner and did not return to the box for food. Jemison walked/hopped around the building ledge as far as it goes (the ledge does not go completely around the building and back to the nest box area).
When we left at 2:15 pm Beauty was on TSB, Archer on Mercury, Callidora in the nest box, and Jemison was still on the southside of TSB.
We returned on Sunday, June 27 and arrived about 8:30 am.
Beauty was on the communications tower and Archer was on the fire escape on Wilder, Jemison and Callidora were in the nest box area.
10:30 Jemison “flew” from the nest box area to the south corner.
10:46 Jemison “flew” back to the nest box area from the south corner.
11:45 Beauty brought food to Jemison and Callidora.
12:10 Several Turkey Vultures flew around downtown, both Beauty and Archer returned to TSB, then one went after the Turkey Vultures and returned to TSB. A few minutes later Archer chased more Turkey Vultures, and flew toward the Communications Tower. Then Beauty came off TSB and vigorously chased the Turkey Vultures, pounding on one of them over the river.
We left at 12:30 pm.

Margaret – Thursday, June 24 4 pm-9pm

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Beautiful sunshine after the rain brought me to my first fledge watch yesterday.  I met Carol P, Dawn and Carrie at 4pm who pointed out where Beauty and Archer were.  Beauty was under the SE wing on what I call “the pedestal”, and Archer was over on  the OCSR I beam.      C and J were resting as they had just been fed a short time before and all was quiet.  Quiet until a turkey vulture flew by.  Archer streaked off the OCSR in an impressive show of defending his family, with Beauty right behind him.  Archer was fast!  Both returned to where they had been stationed.   Beauty appeared to be stationed like a sentry in front of the nest box while  C and J rested.   Lots going on in the city; people streaming past us for a high school graduation, free concert in the park; many asking us what we were looking at.  By that time we were joined by Jeanne, Carla, Joyce and later Carrie and Shaky.  A new “watcher” came by – hooked by the camera as I was.  More excitement as Jemison and Callidora went out exploring along the well wall and went out of sight for a short time around the north side of the building.   Beauty took off from her post — maybe to “wrangle”  her daredevil offspring.  It worked.  Both returned to the porch area.
Ralph went to check Mercury and found a feather from dinner “prep”.  Sure enough, Beauty returned with dinner for the  girls  (or maybe girl and boy). Archer and Beauty did some good flying and stoops and are clearly trying to teach their young’uns.   I left around 9 pm with Joyce, Shaky and Carrie still on watch.  Callidora and Jemison were in the next box.  It’s just a matter of days and they will be joining their parents in the sky.  My first impression of watchin?  Nice people, awesome birds…a great reality show!

Rochester Falcon Watcher: Marcia L.

Really late, but here are a few pics from last Sunday, 20 June.

6/23 Wednesday Morning Watch 8:15-10:30 AM

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

From Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK:

I watched from about 8:15 – 10:30 this morning. Archer was on OCSR napping on his favorite ledge, the kids were flapping and hopping around. No sighting of Beauty at first when she appeared first directly above the nestbox under a wing on the TS building. Stayed there awhile then flew to the ledge below the SE wing for a bit. She then flew down and landed on top of the nestbox for a minute while Jemison and Callidora stood there watching her. Archer left while this was happening and then Beauty went in the nestbox , I couldn’t see what she was doing. Girls seem to be liking the right side of the nest box today and the ledge around the area the ramp is on. When I left I couldn’t find either adult and the girls were in the shade on the rt. side of nest box.

Falcon Watches June 21st – Larry O

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

2 separate watches: lunchtime and evening.
Lunchtime: Met Jim P. Highlight was a chase by Archer over the river. At first it seemed confusing because the little bird seemed to be attacking Archer. Could have been my angle of view. The second half was definite tho’. Archer was chasing the little black bird around the sky with loops, turns and dives. He did not get the plucky little guy tho’.
During the evening, Archer brought in a meal which Beauty took away. The young ones were on the platform. Archer was on TS. Beauty was on Mercury. All was quiet in falcon land.

Fledge Watch Meeting Announcement – Saturday, 6/19/10

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Hi Watchers,
We will be meeting on Saturday morning at 9:00 AM at the Central Library on South Ave.  When you enter the main door on the South Ave. side of the new building, which is on the SE corner of Broad and South Ave., go straight back to the Kay Gleason Auditorium which is across from Simply Crepes.

I will have coffee for all somewhere near the corner of Exchange and Broad St. at 8:00 AM, if you want to hang out and watch the falcons.  Be a good conservationist and bring your travel mug.
