I think we’ve skipped right over Spring into Summer.  When I first arrived downtown, it was close to 80 degrees.  Now it’s 90 or more!

Because there is no parking on the Broad St Bridge, I parked on the next street over, the Court St Bridge.  To give you an idea of what we can see from there, here are some pictures of my view.  From there, I could see Dot.ca on the top Ibeam of OCSR and Beauty inside the nest box shading her eyases.

I moved over to Aqueduct St aka “the Hole” for a closer look.  From that angle, I could not see into the nest box.  Here is what I could see.

Dot.ca remained on the top IBeam of OCSR.

Since all was peaceful and quiet and very hot, I moved on to the path across from Seneca Towers.  Dana was out, so she joined me there.

We found one falcon on the bridge and one hawk flew overhead.  I believe it was a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk.  Because of the heat, there wasn’t much activity and we didn’t stay long.

It was time to check out the Firehouse Woods in Greece, NY, which is a suburb of Rochester.  I was ready to take a walk and look for birds in the shade.  🙂  Today Dana and I saw two life birds, (birds I had never seen before). The first was a Woodcock and the 2nd a Black-billed Cuckoo.  Nice!

A very happy Mother’s Day to Beauty and all the moms out there!  Every moment I have with my mom, I consider a gift.

I arrived downtown around 10:30 am.  Lots of folks were out and about and it wasn’t easy finding a parking spot.  Especially now that work has started on the Broad St Bridge and it is closed to parking.  Something was going on at the Blue Cross Arena (aka Rochester War Memorial).  I finally found a spot on Aqueduct St (aka “the hole”).

When I first arrived, Dot.ca (DC) was on the south corner, top Ibeam on OCSR.  He didn’t stay long.  He was off, either on a hunt, or picking up cached food.  At 10:50 am, DC flew up to the nest box bringing in food.  Beauty took the food, flew out from the nest box, and circled back, landing on the platform on the opposite side of main cam from DC.  She took the food into the nest box to feed the 4 eyases.  Dot.ca took off and headed back to OCSR, landing on the top IBeam, west corner.

At 11:08 am, Beauty finished feeding the eyases and cached the leftovers on OCSR, 2nd IBeam down.  Dot.ca flew into the nest box to watch over his young ones.  Beauty finished caching the food and returned to the nest box.  Dot.ca came out and again landed on OCSR on the west corner.  This is the perfect spot for him to watch over his family.

When I ended my watch, Dot.ca was on guard on OCSR and Beauty was in the nest box with their four eyases.  All was quiet and peaceful.

Before leaving I walked up to Broad St. to check out the work being done.  The two outer lanes, that would normally be used for parking are open to traffic.  The center lanes are closed off and being worked on.  According to what I heard on the radio, this work could continue into next summer.  This could cause some problems for us during the fledge watch.  We’ll have to wait and see. Not too much going on around the Times Square Bldg while incubation continues.  So, we wait for the eyases to appear.  Lots of loud peeping coming from the eggs could be heard by those watching the Rfalconcam Streaming Video yesterday.  A hatch should happen soon!

Yesterday, I got a text from Larry O.  He would be bringing his dog Harold down for a watch.  Harold is very ill and this would probably be the last chance I would have to see him.  Dana, Kathy O and I joined Larry and Harold on Aqueduct St (aka “the hole).  Beauty was up on the top Ibeam of OCSR.  She didn’t  stay long.  Beauty flew up to the nest box and Dot.ca flew out to take her place on OCSR.

That was the only activity we had until a wayward Turkey Vulture (TV) flew a little too close to the Times Square Bldg (TSB). Dot.ca was off and quickly caught up to the TV as it flew to the north side of the TSB.  We all watched as the Dot.ca hit the TV at least 5 times.  They were hard hits and the TV did all it could to get away.  Finally it did and Dot.ca again settled on the west corner, top IBeam of OCSR.

We ended our downtown watch.  Dana and I headed over to Seneca Towers where we found Seth (we believe) on the bridge.  He flew around to different spots, finally settling in a tree on the east side of the river.  If we hadn’t seen him land there, it would have been almost impossible to find him.

Dana spotted this nest nearby.  We believe that it was a squirrel’s nest covered in cotton material.  Smart squirrel!

Hello everyone!  Sorry for the delay!

I was out last weekend (4/16 & 4/17).  There was the normal activity by our downtown falcons Beauty and Dot.ca.  During the day they take turns in the nest, incubating the eggs.  So what we watchers see on the street is their comings and goings.  lol

There was one thing of interest that happened on April 16th (Saturday).  Watchers Dana and Dan were on Aqueduct St (aka “the hole”) when a young juvie falcon flew over and a circled above the Times Square Bldg.  There was no aggression by either Beauty or Dot.ca.  It stayed in the area for a short while, but never landed.  Dana and I looked for the juvie, but never did find it. Here are a couple of pictures that Dana took of the juvie.

Here are some pictures I took last weekend.  There’s even one of either Billie or Seth at Seneca Towers on the north end window ledge.

Friday, April 22, 2016 (1:00 pm – 3:00 pm)

Yesterday, I went downtown for a falcon watch.  It was a beautiful spring day.  When I arrived, Dot.ca was on the top Ibeam of OCSR and Beauty was in the nest box on the eggs.  At 1:21 pm, DC flew to the nest box and in.  Beauty came out, flew around a bit, stretching her wings, and then landed on the Mercury statue’s foot.

Beauty took off.  I went to look for her and when I returned to the Broad St Bridge, she was on the top Ibeam of OCSR.  Again she took off, this time on a hunt over the river.  Pigeons scattered everywhere!  All was peaceful and quiet for our downtown pair.

Here are a couple of pictures I got before my old Kodak camera decided to bite the dust.  The good news is, I was able to “fix” it last night.  I know it’s on it’s way to the old camera graveyard, but I’m trying to keep it “alive” for as long as I can.  🙂

It was such a beautiful day on Thursday (4/21), that watchers Lisa McK, Brian H, Susan C and I decided to take a trip to Braddock Bay to check out the migration.  Lots of Sharp-shinned Hawks passing over.  We also had a few Kestrels, Osprey, and a Red-shouldered Hawk (juvie).  We also had the good luck to see two male Harriers, the beautiful gray ghosts flying together over the marsh in front of us along with a female.  Lots of fellow birders were gathered to see the sight!

I arrived downtown at 8:00 am and quickly found a falcon on the south side of OCSR’s top IBeam.  It turned out to be Beauty, thanks to a heads up from on line watcher Donna that Dot.ca was inside the nest box on the eggs.  My watch started with bright sunshine and a very cold 25 degrees (F).  At 8:20 am, Beauty took off and slowly flew around to the north side of OCSR.

I waited to see if she would return.  When she didn’t, I drove over to the Andrews St Bridge (ASB).  From there I spotted her on the Ellwanger and Barry Bldg on State St.  I believe she was caching a meal there.  I drove over for a closer look, but she took off before I could take a picture.  Beauty headed back towards OCSR.

Back on the Broad St Bridge (BSB).  From there I could see that Beauty had returned to the top IBeam on OCSR (8:40 am). About 10 minutes later, she took off and flew up to the nest box.  Very quickly, Dot.ca flew out and took her place on OCSR, 2nd IBeam down.

Dot.ca took off and took the same route that Beauty had earlier, slowly flying around the east end of OCSR to the north side.  I again waited to see if he would return.  I headed back over to the ASB and found Dot.ca on the Ellwanger and Barry Bldg.  This time I made it over to State St in time to see that he was eating Pigeon leftovers.  Probably what Beauty cached there.

Dot.ca finished his meal and headed back towards OCSR.  From the Broad St Bridge, I found him on the top Ibeam of OCSR.

Dot.ca was in hunt mode, scanning the sky to the south.  At 10:00 am, he took off and went on a hunt over the river.  Pigeons scattered everywhere.  He was unsuccessful and returned to OCSR.  Still keeping an eye on the Pigeons locals below him.

At 10:40 am, Dot.ca took off, this time heading west.  The search was on.  From the ASB, I saw a falcon on the Frontier Communication Tower’s (FCT) northeast corner box.  Based on size, I believe that it was Dot.ca.

While I was driving towards FCT, Dot.ca took off, but I didn’t see which direction he took.

Fellow Falcon Watcher Dana had texted me, letting me know that she was heading over to Seneca Towers.  I decided it was time to check on Billie and Seth.  As I was approaching Kodak Office, I spotted a falcon up on the northeast corner of the launch pad.  Hmmm, that was unusual.  I hadn’t seen Beauty or Dot.ca over here in quite awhile.  It looked like Dot.ca.

I drove further down and parked in front of the RG&E BeeBee Station.  From there I spotted another falcon on the northeast corner of Kodak Office’s Bldg 20.  A quick check to make sure Dot.ca was still above on the launch pad.  Yep!  Was this Beauty? I texted out a question, was Beauty still on the eggs?  Immediately Lisa and Pat got back to me.  Yes, Beauty was still in the nest box!  This was a 3rd falcon.  Clouds had moved in and the lighting was horrible.  My big lens friend Dana was on her way.  🙂

Based on size, I was pretty sure this was a female.  She stretched and I saw a hint of red on her band.

Dot.ca was gone.  Pat texted that he was now in the nest box on the eggs and Beauty was gone.  Dana had arrived.

At noon, a falcon flew over high above, circled and headed back to the south.  The falcon on Bldg 20 moved down the ledge and started to vocalize loudly.  When she left the corner, a Crow flew down and landed there.  There was a bit of food there and the Crow took some of it.

She continued to vocalize and then moved back out to the corner.  From there she took off heading south, low in front of the buildings.  Dana and I met up and discussed what we had seen.  We were fairly sure this was a young female.  She had a lot of adult plumage, but you could still see a juvie brown feather here and there.  It reminded me of the first time we saw Rhea Mae at the Sheraton, adult and juvie plumage mixed together.  We were also pretty sure she had red tape over her USFW silver band and the other band was black/black.

Dana checked her pictures last night and was able to verify that we were correct.  But, due to lighting, she was unable to see any numbers/letters on the black/black band.  This was the same band color combination that was on the intruding female at the Buffalo, NY, Statler nest box on April 4th.  Could this be Tessa, banded in 2014 at Mississauga, Holcim, daughter of Caspian and the late Storm?  I’m just really sorry we couldn’t have verified her band #’s.

The good news is, if this was Tessa, she survived her fight at the Statler nest box.  She did not look like she was injured.

Dana and I tried to find the 3rd falcon, but had no luck.  We returned to the Broad St Bridge and found Dot.ca on the south side of OCSR on the top IBeam.  Beauty was back in the nest box on the eggs.

All was quiet and peaceful downtown.  Hopefully the other female we saw at Kodak Office will moved on and leave our downtown pair to their egg sitting.

Dana and I continued our falcon watch at Seneca Towers.  We parked in our usual spot across the river from the high rise apartments.  At first we saw no falcons, but then we heard vocalizations.  There was now a falcon on the bridge.  I’m pretty sure that it was Billie.  Fellow watcher Pat joined us.

All was quiet and peaceful at Seneca Towers.  It was time to end my Sunday Falcon Watch!

It’s been awhile since I’ve been to Syracuse to visit with our girl Pigott and her mate George.  Since it’s been quiet here in Rochester, fellow falcon watcher Lisa McK and I decided to check on them!

We left Rochester just before 8:00 am.  It was an overcast day and it was cold.  A perfect day for a road trip.  🙂

Usually we visit Syracuse on a weekend, so it was a little more busy than we were used to.  At first, we could not find any falcons.  Finally after driving around the area, we spotted a falcon on the corner of the railing on the Verizon Bldg.  Based on size we believed that this was a male.

Before I go on, we are assuming that we were watching Pigott and George.  We were never close enough to see bands to get a positive ID.

We found a spot to park where we could see both the nest box on the State Bldg and George on the Verizon Bldg.

We could not see into the nest box to see if Pigott was there.  It wasn’t long before George took off and flew over us, landing on the Bank of America Bldg.

George was looking every which-way.  He was definitely in hunt mode.  He took off heading towards Rte 690 behind us and stooped!  Pigeons scattered in all directions.  George did not come back into view and we thought his hunt had been successful.

About 10 minutes later, we heard a Peregrine loudly calling above us.  It was George and he was carrying food.  Would Pigott appear? Yes!  She came flying out of the nest box and joined George.  She quickly caught up to him and went talons up.  A classic food transfer!

George flew up to the nest box and Pigott took her meal to a corner of Syracuse’s City Hall.

Now we knew.  Pigott and George were incubating eggs in their nest box on the State Bldg.  Since their cameras are off, there is no way to know how many eggs they may have.

After finishing her meal, she cached the remainder on the Verizon sign.  She then flew up to the same railing we had first seen George.

Pigott then took off and flew back to the State Bldg, landing near the nest box.

Pigott remained there for awhile, preening and keeping watch.  She then flew down to the nest box.  There was a changing of the guard as George flew out.

George settled on the State Bldg, close to where Pigott had been.

We left them for awhile and returned to find George back on the Bank of America.

This was our view of the State Bldg.

Lisa and I were very happy to have seen both Pigott and George.  To verify that, based on behavior, they were incubating eggs in their nest box.  There had been reports of a territorial battle recently.  All was quiet and peaceful.

On our way home, we took the long way to Montezuma and saw many different birds and critters.  Including a beautiful male Harrier aka Gray Ghost, hunting over a farmer’s field.  Also an Osprey on a nest and a couple of Bald Eagles.  Oh, and this Groundhog, aka swear word.  lol

I went out for a short falcon watch this morning and met up with fellow falcon watchers Lisa McK, Kathy O and Dana.  When I first arrived, Beauty was on the base of Mercury finishing a meal.  She took off and flew in front of OCSR heading west.  We moved down to Aqueduct St (aka “the hole”) to see if we could find her.

From the hole, Dana was the first one to spot a Turkey Vulture under attack over the river.  It was Beauty and she was escorting the big, graceful bird out of her territory.  A large flock of pigeons was up and flying, hoping she wasn’t on the hunt.  Beauty flew over us and landed on the top Ibeam of OCSR.

It was very cold, but the sun was shining brightly.  Beauty was enjoying the sun, stretching and preening.  She took off and flew over us, heading towards the Times Square Bldg.  She landed on the corner of the nest box platform.

Dot.ca was inside the nest box on the eggs and she was in no hurry to take over.  For quite awhile she remained on the platform looking in at Dot.ca.  Then she moved to the nest box perch.  Dot.ca was in no hurry to leave.  When the time was right, he flew out and over to the top Ibeam of OCSR.

We hung out for awhile. All was quiet and peaceful, so we ended our watch with Beauty in the nest box on the eggs and Dot.ca sunning and preening on OCSR.

I was keeping an eye on the live streaming video feed most of the day.  Everything was quiet in our downtown falcons world. Beauty and Dot.ca were switching off, each taking a turn on the three eggs in the nest box on the Times Square Bldg. I even witnessed them copulating (mating) twice on the pan cam (aka Camera #1).

At approximately 5:00 pm, that all changed.  Dot.ca was on the eggs.  He stood up and started to alarm kak kak kak!  He took off fast diving down heading east.  The folks that were on live streaming video started to chat, wondering what was going on.  A few seconds later, we could see a falcon fly by pan cam and away again.  Something had entered Beauty and Dot.ca’s territory and they did not like it.  It was time for me to head downtown.

Before I left, I checked one more time to see what was going on.  Dot.ca was back inside the nest box on the eggs.  Falcon Fan NCA said she had seen a quick glimpse of a tail on camera at the Powers Bldg nest box.

When I arrived downtown, I could not find any falcons.  NCA tweeted that Dot.ca was inside the nest box, but they had not seen Beauty return.  Other falcon watchers arrived.  I was joined by Joyce and Kathy O.  We split up and searched for Beauty. I met Kathy O on Aqueduct St (aka “the hole”).  We were just getting ready to go to the Broad St Bridge, when Beauty flew in from the east and landed on the corner of the nest box platform.  We parked by the Blue Cross Arena (aka The Rochester War Memorial). From there we had a good view of the nest box.  Joyce joined us a few minutes later.

Beauty entered the nest box and Dot.ca flew out to land on top of the Mercury Statue.  We spotted Dan on the Broad St Bridge and joined him.

We chatted with Dan for awhile.  This is his 18th year watching the Rochester Falcons!

Dot.ca took off heading west.  He ended up on the OCSR’s top IBeam at the west corner.

It was getting cold, so it was time to end our watch.  All was quiet and peaceful.  We never did see the intruder, but I had to wonder if it might have been the same female Peregrine Falcon we saw Beauty chase out of the area on Easter Sunday.  We’ll keep watching!

Oh, and we are on egg watch now!  As I type this, Beauty is in the nest box and if she does lay a 4th egg, I expect it will arrive early tomorrow morning!  🙂

I hope everyone had a very Happy Easter!  Easter Sunday is notoriously a day that bad things happen.  Today it was pretty much business as usual for our downtown duo.  Except for a late afternoon visit by a 3rd falcon. My falcon watch was broken into two parts.

Morning Falcon Watch

My morning watch was very quiet.  It started out very cold with temps in the mid-20’s, blue sky and bright sunshine.  Beauty and Dot.ca were very active.  Dot.ca was on the base of Mercury, prepping food for Beauty who was inside the nest box. They both did a lot of flying and Dot.ca was hunting from the pan cam (aka Camera #1) near the nest box on the Times Square Bldg (TSB). Here are some pictures I took during my morning watch.

I moved up to Falcon Central, which is on Broad St, closer to the TSB.  Larry O and Harold stopped by for a quick visit.

Beauty accepted Dot.ca’s food gift and took it to the top IBeam of OCSR (west corner).  Dot.ca moved up to Camera #1 aka the pan cam.

I decided it was time to move down to Aqueduct St (aka “the hole”).  From there I had a nice view of both Beauty and Dot.ca.

Beauty took off from OCSR and took a nice flight around the area.

Beauty landed on the ledge below the northeast wing on the Times Square Bldg.  Her crop was very full.  Dot.ca remained on the pan cam.

Dot.ca took off and flew up to Beauty.  They copulated (mated).  Dot.ca flew over to the OCSR and Beauty remained soaking up the sun under the northeast wing.  The new light doesn’t seem to bother her at all.

Beauty returned to the nest box and Dot.ca returned to the pan cam.  All was quiet and peaceful Easter Sunday morning.  I left Beauty and Dot.ca to check on our other pair over at Seneca Towers.

By this time, the temps were up in the 60’s (F) (they would reach the 70’s by the end of the day).  It was a gorgeous day.  I checked out Seneca Towers from the west side of the river.  From there I had a great view of the apartment building and the river gorge.  I kept hearing the call of a Peregrine from below the treeline in front of me.  I looked and looked and finally found a falcon in a tree below me, closer to the river.  Just as I put my camera up to take a picture, the falcon took off!  Darn!  lol  This falcon headed north following the river and under the bridge.  I attempted to find it on the other side of the bridge, but had no luck.  When I returned to the south side of the bridge, I saw a falcon flying over Seneca Towers.  It landed on the window ledge at the north end of the building.  Not sure if it was Billie or Seth.  It was time to end my morning watch after checking the Medley Ctr and finding no falcon there.

Late Afternoon Falcon Watch

I really hadn’t planned on going downtown again in the afternoon. But after hearing Beauty’s repeated alarm calls on the live streaming video, I decided it was time to check it out.  So after eating my ham dinner, which was very yummy, I headed downtown to see what was going on.

When I first arrived, Dot.ca was on top of pan cam and Beauty was nowhere to be found.

I was down in the hole, when Dot.ca took off heading southeast, very fast.  I lost sight of him and headed up to the Broad St Bridge.  Fellow watcher and good friend Dan was sitting on the bridge.  He had not seen Dot.ca take off.  Lisa McK joined us and we kept watch on the area, hoping that Beauty and Dot.ca would return.  At that time of day, the sun was almost directly in our eyes when we looked west, making it hard to see.

After awhile, Dot.ca returned to the nest box. A little while after that, Beauty returned and landed on the nest box platform. They both came out.  Beauty to the base of Mercury and Dot.ca to the OCSR, 2nd IBeam down.

Dan, Lisa and I were enjoying the beautiful afternoon warmth and watching the hawks passing overhead on their migration. At first we thought this was what had Beauty and Dot.ca on edge.

At 5:30 pm, Beauty headed back to the nest box and Dot.ca landed at the top of the Times Square Bldg on the southeast wing ring.  He flew south towards the jail communication tower.  A few minutes later, he came back with prey, landing on the base of Mercury.

We were joined by Joyce and Brian H.  All was quiet until 6:15 pm when Beauty flew out of the nest box heading south.  Now we were looking directly into the sun.  We noticed that Beauty was not alone.  A quick check of the Times Square Bldg showed Dot.ca on the ledge above the nest box.  We had three falcons!  The 3rd falcon was as large as Beauty, so another female.

They flew around each other, but we never witnessed any contact between them.  I was following one of them, and watched it fly over OCSR heading north.  We lost sight of the 2nd one when some folks approached us asking what we were looking at. Dot.ca went to the nest box.  Brian and Dan had to leave, so Lisa, Joyce and I split up looking for Beauty.  We couldn’t find her, so we returned to falcon central.  At 6:40 pm, Beauty returned to the top Ibeam (west corner) on OCSR.  She was definitely on guard, watching for the return of the other female.  Thankfully she did not return.

A 7:00 pm, Beauty finally returned to the nest box and Dot.ca flew over to OCSR to take her spot.  All was finally quiet and peaceful.  Since then, all has been quiet.  Beauty laid her 3rd egg yesterday (Monday) afternoon.  Hopefully the other female will not return.  She may have been migrating through the area and got curious about our downtown pair.  Another Easter Sunday Falcon Watch done!  🙂

Happy First Day of Spring!  It sure didn’t feel like spring, with a temperature of 18 degrees (F) when I left the house this morning.  Brrrr!

But, the sun was shining brightly, adding a welcoming warmth while I sat inside my car.

When I arrived downtown, I found Beauty on the north side railing of Widows Walk (WW).

Larry reported that Dot.ca was on the NW corner of the Powers Bldg.  So, that’s where I headed next.  From City Hall, I could see both Beauty and Dot.ca.

I could also hear the very distinctive vocalization of a very irate Kestrel.  It was buzzing between the Powers Bldg and City Hall, landing for a moment on a pointed spire.  Then back towards the Powers Bldg.  Dot.ca was off like a flash and he chased the Kestrel over City Hall and past the Frontier Communication Tower.  A moment later, Dot.ca returned, flying over me heading south.  This reminded me so much of the “kestrel runs” we all got used to when watching Mariah and Kaver over at the Kodak Tower. Kestrels were nesting in the old RG&E plant and they would constantly make runs on the Kodak falcons and vice versus. When I looked back at WW, Beauty was gone.  I reported this and headed back to the Times Square Bldg.

I met both Larry and Harold in “the hole” (Aqueduct St).  While we were chatting, Dana tweeted that both Beauty and Dot.ca were inside the Powers nest box. Beauty came out and landed on the west corner, top Ibeam of OCSR.  A few moments later, Dot.ca flew towards her and they copulated.

After Larry and Harold left me, Beauty took off and flew up to the Times Square Bldg. nest box.

Dot.ca took over Beauty’s spot on the west end of the top Ibeam on OCSR.  Beauty came out of the nest box and flew directly over me, landing on top of the Mercury statue.

It was very quiet while our downtown pair soaked in the sun and preened.  Then Dot.ca took off and flew fast heading south. Beauty took off and flew to the nest box. There was no vocalization by either of them.  I parked on the Broad St Bridge, but could not see where Dot.ca went.  I could see Beauty at the nest box.

It was time for me to end my downtown watch.  I headed to Seneca Towers and found both Billie and Seth soaking up the sun.

The gorge was alive with all types of birds, including three Turkey Vultures floating overhead.

I found no falcons at Medley Ctr.

A couple days ago Kathy O spotted something new on the Times Square Bldg. Looks like lights were installed at the top of the building under the wings.  Joyce reported today that she believes they are LED lights.  They are pointing straight up to light up the wings, so they should not bother the falcons.  In fact, most of the nest sites in Rochester are located near floodlights, including the Kodak Tower and the Powers Bldg.
