06/10/20 (06:40 – 07:30) Fledge Watch

Thursday, June 11th, 2020

By Larry OHeron

Had one adult on Mercury but it left. Can see all three baby falcons from Court Street. They are all in the vicinity of main cam.

Weather report. Temperature in the high 60s with humidity. Lots of cloud cover this morning. Keeping it pleasant. Right now a rainstorm is expected to come through around 10:30 a.m. not the same without Dan on the bridge with me.

Adult flew in with meal. Eyases had spread themselves out from main cam to the north wall, but gathered back together by main cam for the meal. The one on the north wall gave me a little scare as it seemed to be flapping on the lip of the wall, but all is good now.

Adult to Mercury. Eyases left alone with food.

I believe it was DC that brought the food in and then went to Mercury.

All three baby falcons are back by main cam.

Have all five falcons now. DC is on Mercury’s arm. Beauty is on the southwest corner of the Wilder building. The baby falcons are spread out from main cam to the north wall.

Wednesday Morning Fledge Watch – 6-10-20

Wednesday, June 10th, 2020

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

It was already warm when we arrived in the hole (aka Aqueduct St). Temps were going to rise into the low to mid-90’s today with a heat index near 100. Not a good day for one of our eyases to fledge.

Watchers Kathy O, Sue, Shaky, Larry O and Carol P. were on fledge watch this morning.

Beauty and Dot.ca were both on Mercury and we could see all three eyases near the nest box.

During our watch (6:30 to 11:00 am), there was a lot of activity by our five falcons. We did not have a fledge during that time and I was thankful. The heat and humidity was rising. Tomorrow promises to be much cooler. Of course, we may still have a fledge today. You just never know!

Here are some pictures that I took during our morning fledge watch. Enjoy! and be safe everyone!

I’ll leave you with two Paranoid Pigeons.

Hey Pete! Do you feel like someone is watching us?
It’s those two kids!

Kathy O and I arrived downtown around 8:00 am. Roc was out at the north end of the wall. He was standing tall and looking off to the north. Dot.ca was on the OCSR and Beauty was in the nest box area with Geraki and Hope.

Hope came out on the platform for a look around.

Dot.ca came in with food and landed on the wall. Roc came sprinting towards him, forcing Dot.ca to take off, leaving the food on the wall for Roc.

Geraki and Hope watched from the platform.

Geraki came out onto the wall bump and watched Roc eat his fill. When Roc was done, he brought what remained closer to Geraki and she jumped down from the bump and ate what was left.

Geraki and Roc spent most of the watch out on the wall. Roc has lost most of his fluff, unlike Geraki. I believe he will be fledging first and soon.

Hopefully the Fledge Watchers will be able to start watching soon and I hope that some of them will take the time to leave Fledge Watch Reports.

Here’s an added bonus! A video of Dot.ca delivering food to Roc on the wall, then being chased off!

Stay safe everyone!

Sunday Morning Falcon Watch 6-7-20

Sunday, June 7th, 2020

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

So, here we are. It’s almost that time of year again, when our young eyases are losing their white fluff and getting ready to take their first flights. The Rochester Falcon Watchers are preparing to start the fledge watch. The eyases still have a lot of white fluff, so we still have a little bit of time.

It was a beautiful Sunday morning. Temps starting out in the 50’s, with bright sunshine and a brilliant blue sky. Dana and Lisa McK joined me for the morning watch. We decided to watch from the hole (aka Aqueduct St). From there we could see the eyas that had made it out onto the wall.

Our young falcons will not be banded this year due to the corona virus. So, we are looking for ways to tell them apart. We’re pretty sure that we have one boy and two girls. The smaller, blue footed eyas is the first to make it out onto the wall and is most probably a male. The two larger, yellow footed eyases are probably females.

From our position, we could see the eyas on the wall. Beauty was on top of the Mercury statue and Dot.ca was on top of the Times Square Bldg (TSB) under the NE wing.

Then there was our eyas playing peek-a-boo from the wall.

Male Eyas on the Wall

Here are some pics of the wall walking eyas that I took during the watch.

Finally all three eyases came into view!

Here’s the girls!

It’s just a matter of time before they join their brother on the wall.

The Girls Will Go to the Wall Soon

When we ended our watch, Dot.ca was up on top of the TSB on the wing ring. We weren’t sure where Beauty was, maybe on Cam 4.

On our way home, we checked Seneca Towers. There was one adult up on the railing of the building. Last week we saw both adults (Billie & Beau?). We’re definitely keeping an eye on this area.

Please keep safe everyone!
