More gloomy weather with overcast conditions but mild temperature of ย 40 (F) 4 (C)

I had no falcons at Seneca Towers to greet me this morning as I started my watch. When I got downtown, it wasn’t until I checked the east side of the river that I found Beauty on a northeast corner of Legacy Tower eating. I was parked on Elm St. and quite soon after arriving she finished eating and flew off to the northwest.

img_0003-beauty-from-elm-stimg_0004-pretty-full-crop

She had a pretty full crop on her. As I was driving onto the Broad St. bridge I spotted her on the top I-beam southeast side of OCSR. I went to the Radisson Hotel by Main St. to watch her and check the elevator shaft for Dot.ca (DC).

img_0006-beauty1img_0008-beautyimg_0009-beauty

The Beautyful one turned her back to me after doing some cleaning up from her meal so I set out to look for DC again. No luck finding him today again. I suspect he may be going over to the Brighton site or perhaps he has migrated. I ended up on Bank Place where it meets Aqueduct St. in the hole.

img_0011-looking-southeastimg_0015-beauty

Beauty was looking southeast predominately so it made me wonder if she could see DC somewhere over there. Unfortunately, I had to leave for an appointment and couldn’t look for him anymore ending my watch at 8:30am.

Later, as I was on my way home to Seneca Towers and crossing the Veteran’s Memorial bridge a falcon flew up from below the bridge just above the railing to my right not more than 10 feet away then back down into the gorge. You can be sure that put a smile on this watchers face! ๐Ÿ™‚

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Another dismal day in Rochester with scattered showers and overcast skies and a temperature of ย 38 (F) 3 (C)

Parked at the north end of Seneca Towers (ST) again, when I looked up I found Seth in his spot on the north window ledge and Billie on the northwest corner with her back to me.

img_0002-billieimg_0003-seth2img_0004-bs<Click

I set out for East Ridge Rd. for a better look and found Seth had flown over to join Billie-he was on the railing above her. Seth soon flew off at 7:31am as Billie watched him and then she followed as they went toward the south end of ST.

img_0005-bsseth-takes-offimg_0009-billie

I spotted them on the tall antenna at the south end of the building as I drove south on St. Paul St. I made a U-turn to check them out as Seth was on the tippy top and she was below him on her favorite spot on that particular antenna.

img_0010-bsimg_0013-sethimg_0015-billie

Seth looked down at his girl a couple times then took off while I was watching Billie. She then took off and they disappeared to the northwest together.

img_0016-seth-watching-his-girlimg_0017-billie-flies-off-to-join-her-man

I left for downtown at that point and when I pulled over on the Andrews St. bridge I spotted Dot.ca (DC) over on the southeast wing ring at the very top of Times Square at 7:52am.

img_0020-dc1

I drove to Aqueduct St. in the hole to observe him but he was gone when I got there. Instead, I found Beauty on the top I-beam southeast side of OCSR near the west corner.

img_0021-beauty

From there I left to check the elevator shaft from the Radisson Hotel by Main St. DC wasn’t up there and I had Beauty’s back to me so I moved on.

img_0026-beauty

As I stopped on Bragdon St. at the other end of the Radisson I saw DC fly from the green strip on the Ellwanger & Barry building. He headed north then doubled back heading south then I lost sight of him behind Crossroads and never found him again. ย I returned to the hole and shared space with the Beautyful one for a few more minutes as it started raining.

img_0029-beauty1

I left downtown around 8:30am and was unsuccessful in finding any falcons at the Medley Centre or Seneca Towers. I ended my watch at 9:10am smiling from seeing our 4 resident Peregrine Falcons! ๐Ÿ™‚

Morning Falcon Watch 12-2-15

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

A very dark, cloudy morning in Rochester but warm for December with a temperature of ย 47 (F) 8 (C)

I was parked at the north end of my parking lot at Seneca Towers (ST)-as I got to my car and looked up I just caught Billie flying around the northwest corner and head south along the west side and out of sight. Then I spotted Seth in his usual spot on the north window ledge.

img_0003-seth1

I promptly drove out to Seth Green Dr. where I round Billie on the tall antenna at the south end of ST. She was in hunt mode.

img_0004-billie-from-seth-green-drimg_0005-billieimg_0006-from-seth-green-dr

I was parked further back than usual as my regular spot was taken so I decided to go out on St. Paul St. for closer viewing. Billie was watching sparrows below her as she stand perched on a very small surface-it always amazes me what little things they can fit those big yellow feet (BYF) on.

img_0008-billieimg_0010-billieimg_0015-from-st-paul-st

At 7:39am Billie pooped then flew west out of my field of vision. I headed south to downtown.

img_0019-pooparazzi-on-the-jobimg_0021-there-she-goes<Click

Landing on the Andrews St. bridge just before 8am I could see Beauty on the northeast corner of Crossroads eating. I went over to State St. to get closer to her.

img_0029-beautyimg_0031-beautyimg_0034-beauty-moving-preyimg_0035-beauty

For the most part the Beautyful one had her back to me with some profile positions. I left her to look for Dot.ca (DC) but couldn’t find him. He’s been elusive the last few days-this is the second time this week I didn’t see him. Anyway, I ended up on Bragdon Place across the river from Beauty after checking the OCSR elevator shaft. She soon finished eating, did some clean up then stood on the corner perched and facing me.

img_0037-beauty-in-the-process-of-feakingimg_0041-beauty-from-bragdon-placeimg_0046-location-shot-from-bragdon-place<Click

Beauty turned around to poop then perched a few more minutes before flying off to the Frontier Communications tower at 8:43am. I watched as she landed on the southeast cube.

img_0042-beautyimg_0043-beauty-poopsimg_0047-full-crop-on-beautyimg_0050-beauty-off-and-on-her-way-to-fct

It was a slow leisurely flight in which she flapped her wings the whole way. I went over to Allen St. by the City Hall parking lot for a quick shot of her before leaving downtown.

img_0054-beauty-on-fct

I checked the Medley Centre, St. Ann’s Home and Seneca Towers but never saw another falcon-I ended my watch at 9:30am. Sadly, it was reported that Beauty’s mom, Dorothy is no longer at the Cathedral of Learning nest site in Pittsburgh and that another female named Hope has been seen bonding with E2 a number of times. Dorothy is almost 17 years old and has done her part in adding to the Peregrine population-she will be missed. I always smile when I think of her as she gave us Beauty! ๐Ÿ™‚

Morning Falcon Watch 12-1-15

Tuesday, December 1st, 2015

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

A dark overcast morning with a temperature of ย 41 (F) 5 (C)

As I got parked on Seth Green Dr. I spotted Seth on the southwest corner below the railing at Seneca Towers and Billie on the west side railing at the other end of the building as I started my watch.

img_0003-sethimg_0004-billie

Seth flew off soon after I arrived ย while Billie remained. I drove over to East Ridge Rd. to take a look and found Seth in his spot on the north window ledge.

img_0010-seth

I left for downtown at that time and as I arrived just before 8am on the Andrews St. bridge I found Beauty on the top I-beam of OCSR near the west corner.

img_0012-beauty-from-asb

I went over to State St. close to Church St. to watch the Beautyful one for a while. She had her back to me the whole time looking over her shoulders here and there.

img_0015-beauty-from-state-and-church-stimg_0016-beauty-near-west-corner

I left her to look for Dot.ca (DC) then returned after failing to do so. I was determined to find him since I didn’t see him yesterday. After a check on Beauty I took another trip around town and this time I found DC in the OCSR elevator shaft from Bragdon Place at 8:34am. The only way I was able to distinguish it was him is that his tail was hanging down in front of the lighter colored cement below the south ledge.

img_0018-the-tail-gave-him-away

DC came out farther and turned momentarily before turning his back to me again.

img_0020-dc

Satisfied that I had found him, I left downtown checking to see that Beauty was still on OCSR before heading to the Medley Centre. While checking the north side parking lot at 9am, I found a falcon on a light pole and I got all excited that it was Big Frank as she hasn’t been seen since November 10th. She showed her left leg band showing black/green, 77/AX and that’s when I knew I was looking at Buffalo Billie.

img_0024-billie-at-mcimg_0027-billieimg_0028-buffalo-billie

She took off a couple minutes later heading southwest and didn’t come back.

img_0029-there-she-goes

I went home to Seneca Towers thinking Billie had gone there but I found Seth instead. He was on the west side railing near the northwest corner.

img_0033-seth

I ended my watch at 9:30am with a smile after seeing 4 of our Rochester Peregrine Falcons! ๐Ÿ™‚

Morning Falcon Watch 11-30-15

Monday, November 30th, 2015

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

This morning’s starting temperature was 31 (F) -1 (C) . It started out with some dark skies but they moved on making way for bright sunshine and blue skies

I went out to Seth Green Dr. after checking the north end of Seneca Towers (ST) and finding no falcons. As I was making a U-turn to face the building Billie and Seth came flying in from the south to the northwest corner. She landed on a transformer and he landed below her and the railing.

img_0002-bs2img_0004-buffalo-billieimg_0004-seth

Buffalo Billie flew off to the south going into a stoop near Seth Green Park and Seth took off after her. Billie returned and landed on the northwest corner railing.

billie-taking-offseth-follows-billieimg_0010-billie

I wanted to check the north end of ST to see if Seth was back there so I headed over to East Ridge Rd. On the way as I was crossing the overpass bridge on St. Paul St. I saw Billie flying southward down the east side of ST. When I got over to my spot I could see Seth on the north window ledge and Billie on the south end antenna. She flew off and just as I got my camera on him, Seth flew off after her.

seth-takes-off

They didn’t return so off I went to check downtown. Just before 8am I found Beauty on the top I-beam southeast side of OCSR. The sun was lighting her up as I struggled to get a half way decent pic of her from Broad St. next to the Blue Cross Arena.

img_0012-beauty6

I decided to go to the Radisson Hotel by Main St. for a different angle. She was only there a couple minutes-she pooped and spread her wings and turned around.

img_0018-hello-beautyfulimg_0019-beauty2img_0023-pooparazzi-on-dutybeauty-ready-for-take-off1

At 8:04am the Beautyful one took off and flew west where I lost sight of her behind the Wilder building. I suspected she went to Widows Walk (WW) when she didn’t come back into view because that’s the direction she was heading. Sure enough, I found her on the north side railing of WW as I pulled over on Basin St. in the hole.

beauty-about-to-gobeauty-taking-offimg_0024-and-shes-off1img_0037-beauty

Beauty didn’t stay there for long either as she was in hunt mode and spotted something over by Broad St. She dove off at 8:22am came back up to circle WW before leaving my view.

img_0039-she-spots-somethingimg_0040-there-she-goes

I drove over to Broad St. on the west side of Fitzhugh St. where I spotted Beauty on the northwest corner of WW below the railing plucking feathers. So whatever she went after she caught successfully. She had her back to me so I changed locations to Fitzhugh St. where I was much closer to watch.

img_0046-beautyimg_0058-beauty-with-a-mouthfulimg_0062-beautyimg_0063-posing-for-mak

It was a very small prey bird (a sparrow I think) that she caught as I got a good look when she picked it up to change positions.

img_0065-beautysmall-preyimg_0067-beauty

I left her to it and went in search of Dot.ca but never found him. There was no PEFA’s at the Medley Centre or Seneca Towers as I ended my watch at 9:15am. It made me smile to see Billie and Seth together on the building and on the wing today! ๐Ÿ™‚

Morning Falcon Watch 11-29-15

Sunday, November 29th, 2015

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

The temperature this morning was exactly at the freezing point of 32 (F) 0 (C) with overcast skies and very little wind

Billie and Seth were not present at Seneca Towers (ST) this morning but I did see one or both yesterday afternoon toward sundown on 3 separate occasions. I believe it was Seth that flew down past my window toward the river, then a few minutes flew back through heading south. About an hour later just before dark, I saw a falcon flying out over the river heading toward the south end of ST.

When I arrived downtown I found Beauty on the south side of Xerox 6 columns form the southeast corner. She was looking for breakfast and took off shortly after I stopped. She returned a minute or so later and landed on the 5th column this time (her favorite column).

img_0006-shot-from-chestnut-st<Clickimg_0012-beauty5

At 7:49am the Beautyful one flew off, circled the perimeter of Xerox twice, then left my field of vision from Chestnut St. to the northwest.

img_0015-beauty3beauty-about-to-take-off

I went over to the Court St. bridge to have a look around and decided to check out the river while I was there. Only gulls were down in the river between the Court St. and Broad St. bridges including a very large one that looked to be a juvie Great black-backed gull.

img_0022-gulls-on-the-riverimg_0024-big-gull

I left there when I spotted Beauty over on the southwest corner of Widows Walk with prey. I parked on Broad St. at Fitzhugh St. to watch as she was plucking feathers in preparation to eat her fresh catch.

img_0028-beauty3img_0039-beauty5img_0040-beauty-with-a-mouthfulimg_0049-beauty

Larry stopped by for a minute or two during the time Beauty was eating-he was happy to see a falcon. I left Beauty to look for Dot.ca (DC) around 8:35am.

img_0053-here-come-old-flat-topimg_0052-from-broad-and-fitzhugh-stimg_0054-beauty-eh

I found DC over on the top I-beam of OCSR southeast side with a full crop-that boy sure knows how to stuff himself! I parked at the Radisson Hotel by Main St. to share space with him for a few minutes.

img_0059-dcimg_0062-dc-knows-how-to-stuff-himself-wellimg_0065-dcimg_0068-dc

I checked the Medley Centre and found 4 Irondequoit Police cars at the southeast entrance of the mall. I could see a broken window next to the doors where someone had obviously broken in to the mall. No sign of Big Frank today-I got an e-mail from watcher Dick, saying he had seen a falcon on the glass roof over the carousel yesterday morning around 10am.

I made my way home to Seneca Towers, but again no Billie or Seth hanging out on the building. I still ended my watch with a smile at 9:20am after seeing Beauty filling her crop and DC with an already filled crop! ๐Ÿ™‚

Morning Falcon Watch 11-28-15

Saturday, November 28th, 2015

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

It was very dark and overcast today with a temperature of ย 37 (F) 3 (C)

I didn’t see Billie or Seth today either at the start, middle or end of my watch. They had other plans for their day. There were no sightings at Hawkeye and it wasn’t until 7:45am that I found a falcon downtown. Main St. was lit up for the holidays as turned onto it.

img_0002-main-st-lit-up-for-christmas

As I was pulled over on Woodbury Blvd. I could see Beauty up on one of the southwest corners of Legacy Tower (we call this one Archers’ corner) and she had food.

img_0012-beauty4img_0014-location-shot-from-court-stimg_0015-beauty2

Beauty stopped eating after a while for 10-15 minutes then picked up a chunk of food, turned her back to me and started eating again.

img_0019-beauty1img_0024-beautyimg_0030-beauty

When the Beautyful one was done eating she did a lot of feaking and twirling as she just keeps going around in circles in place. She flew off at 8:45am heading northwest. Larry reported seeing her leave but didn’t see her come through. I found her on the top I-beam of OCSR close to the west corner. Larry couldn’t see her there from Crossroads Park where he and Harold were watching.

img_0033-beauty-takes-offimg_0035-beauty1

I went over to the Andrews St. bridge to chat with Larry then left downtown to check the Brighton site and he left for home. I didn’t see any falcons at Brighton site but I found a hawk on a building behind BS.

img_0036-hawk-behind-bs

AfterI made a stop I drove back through downtown hoping to find Dot.ca (DC). I saw that Beauty was still on OCSR and when I looked around from the Andrews St. bridge I spotted our boy, DC on the Ellwanger & Barry (E&B) building eating on the green strip ledge.

img_0039-dc-with-foodimg_0040-dc1

I was parked on Corinthian St. watching as DC took his food to the back of the ledge to finish it up. I would only see his head when he stuck it up to look around. When DC was done he came out to the edge to do some feaking and cleaning up.

img_0044-peekabooimg_0048-dc-slips-and-catches-himselfimg_0049-i-want-moreimg_0053-hmm-wheres-the-closest-cache-of-food

DC flew off at 10:37am heading southeast-I checked OCSR and saw that Beauty was gone too so I imagine they went somewhere together, maybe the elevator shaft.

img_0055-b-bye-mak

I left and headed over to the Medley Centre where I spotted a falcon on a light pole near Sears but when I pulled over and looked again it was gone and I never found it again. I made a couple more stops and got home around noon and ended my watch at that time with no falcons see at Seneca Towers. It made me smile to know that Beauty and DC had both eaten on a chilly end of November morning! ๐Ÿ™‚

Morning Falcon Watch 11-27-15

Friday, November 27th, 2015

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

It was a windy, overcast morning with a temperature of 56 (F) 13 (C)

I started with Seth on the north window ledge of Seneca Towers (ST). I found Billie on the tall antenna on the south end of the building from Seth Green Dr.

img_0002-seth4img_0003-billie2img_0004-billie

She flew off and circled the roof a couple times, returned to the antenna then repeated the circling and disappeared to the north.

img_0005-ready-for-take-offimg_0007-south-end-of-seneca-towers

I drove down Seth Green Dr. to go check the north end of ST and on the way, came across a couple of young deer eating. Their mother must have signaled ย to them to join her across the road in Seth Green Park because they ran over and then they all went down into the gorge out of sight.

img_0008-twins<Clickimg_0009-river-gorge-behind-this-deer

I did find Seth still on the north window ledge with his back to me and so I left for downtown. From the Andrews St. bridge (ASB) I couldn’t miss the whiteness of Dot.ca (DC) on the top I-beam northeast side of OCSR. He had a full crop and there were feathers dangling below him on a cobweb so he’d had a meal recently. I went over to Bragdon Place by the Radisson Hotel to get closer.

img_0014-dc2img_0016-my-what-a-byf-you-haveimg_0018-dc-posingimg_0022-dc

DC took off at 8:10am and flew over to the Frontier Communications tower (FCT). I had to take a phone call and while I was doing that Larry reported seeing a falcon with a pigeon flying over Crossroads Park and going to the Ellwanger & Barry building. I first checked on DC then made my way over to State St. to watch Beauty.

img_0029-dc1img_0030-hi-beautyimg_0031-beauty

I went over to the parking lot by Dunkin’ Donuts at State and Church St. where I could see the Beautyful one better but the back lighting wasn’t good there so back to State St. across from the Powers building I went.

img_0034-beauty3img_0040-beauty1img_0042-across-the-street-from-powers-building

img_0045-beautyimg_0051-beauty

Boy, there were a lot of feathers raining down as Beauty prepped and began eating her fresh catch. I’m sure DC was watching her from FCT but since his crop was full he let her eat in peace today.

img_0062-beauty-with-a-biteimg_0066-beauty-close-up

I had to get going to an appointment but I stopped on the ASB to see if DC was still on the FCT. He was and so I was on my way.

Thanksgiving morning Falcon Watch 11-26-15

Thursday, November 26th, 2015

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

It was a balmy 45 (F) 7 (C) degrees with a busy breeze and mostly overcast skies

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I started my watch from Seth Green Dr. with Billie and Seth on the northwest corner of Seneca Towers. She was on the railing and he was right below her on the roof.

img_0009-billie-and-sethimg_0015-billie-and-seth

They stayed this way for about 10 minutes and then at 7:25am Billie flew off almost taking Seth with her-he spread his wings and followed right behind his mate, down into the river gorge. These two are practically inseparable these days.

img_0016-billie-takes-off-over-sethimg_0017-seth-almost-had-to-duckimg_0018-there-she-goes-down-toward-river-gorgeimg_0020-seth-follows-right-behind-his-girl

When they didn’t return I left for downtown-first stop was the Andrews St. bridge where I spotted Dot.ca (DC) on the Ellwanger & Barry green strip ledge eating.

img_0021-find-the-falcon

I drove over to Corinthian St. right across State St. which is situated between the Crossroads building and the Holiday Inn (formerly the Rochester Plaza Hotel). DC finished eating soon after I arrived then came out to the edge and did a lot of feaking and cleaning up with a pretty full crop.

img_0023-dc-with-half-a-full-cropimg_0026-cant-miss-that-full-white-cropimg_0028-talon-lickin-good

He lost his footing a couple times and I thought he would fall off the ledge but managed to catch himself by using his wings.

img_0032-mini-wing-stretchimg_0037-taken-from-corinthian-stimg_0039-dc1

DC gave a wave, spread his wings, then flew off to the east across the river and left my field of vision.

img_0041-hi-folksimg_0043-stretch-it-out-stretch-it-outimg_0045-ready-for-takeoff

I drove around to the Broad St. Bridge and found Beauty on the base of Mercury. She had a depleted crop and was in hunt mode.

img_0053-beautyimg_0054-beautyimg_0058-beautay

Flocks of pigeons started flying back and forth over the river in front of her and I knew it was only a matter of time before she made a move on them. Off she went at 8:16am passing overhead and just as I was starting to get out of the car so I could follow their flight she must have hit one of them because feathers were floating down onto the sidewalk.

img_0059-beautyimg_0060-watching-pigeonsimg_0061-beauty-flies-off-after-pigeons

This was that pigeon’s lucky day for it escaped with its life and the Beautyful one broke off and flew east past the Radisson Hotel out of view. I didn’t find her or DC again but they sure did give me some action while they hung out with me. I ended my watch at 9am after coming up empty at the Medley Centre again. I went home thankful for seeing our 4 resident Rochester Peregrine Falcons and yes, I was smiling! ๐Ÿ™‚

Morning Falcon Watch/Billie and Seth home again 11-25-15

Wednesday, November 25th, 2015

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

The sun was just coming up when I started my watch with barely a cloud in the sky and a temperature of 28 (F) -2 (C)

I first checked the north end of Seneca Towers from below in my parking lot and was very pleased to see Seth on his window ledge spot and Billie out on the northwest corner of the railing. I then checked from Seth Green Dr. and then over to my spot on East Ridge Rd.

img_0005-taken-from-seth-green-dr1img_0007-billie-and-seth2<Click until you get a normal sized pic

A few minutes later, Seth flew off at 7:20am down toward the river gorge and didn’t return. I waited a few minutes to see if Billie would follow and just as I was pulling away she took off as well.

img_0012-seth-flies-down-into-the-river-gorgeimg_0013-b-bye-buffalo-billie

I left for downtown and found Beauty under the northeast wing of Times Square (TSB) with her back to me. A minute or so later Dot.ca (DC) flew in and joined her.

img_0017-beauty-watching-dc-fly-up-to-join-herimg_0018-dc-lands-as-beauty-greets-himimg_0031-location-shot-from-basin-st-in-the-hole

Now I don’t know if DC brought food with him, took it from Beauty or found a food scrap at the back of the ledge when he walked back there but he managed to drop it off the side and seemed a bit perturbed over it.

img_0020-dc-heads-to-back-of-ledge-for-food-scrapsdc-with-his-scrap-of-fooddc-drops-food

Meanwhile, the Beautyful one stand perched moving only her head to watch his shenanigans. I must say DC surely entertains me when it comes to food time. He did some preening before walking past Beauty to the other side of the ledge.

img_0024-love-birdsimg_0025-dc-shows-his-falcon-power-signalimg_0030-dc-preeningimg_0039-whitey-er-dc-is-glowing

DC was looking all around his surroundings as Beauty remained perched, still moving only her head.

img_0042-hi-guysimg_0044-see-ya
