Saturday Morning Fledge Watch – 6/20/20

Saturday, June 20th, 2020

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

Watchers from 6:00-11:00 am: Dana, Kathy O, Larry O, Lisa McK and Carol P.

Weather: Very warm and humid. Temps in the 80’s and humid.

We had some guests this morning! First I met Deborah and Erik. They have been watching the Rochester Falcons since 2010 and wanted to see them in person. It was great meeting both of you and I hope you consider helping with the Fledge Watch next year.

Allysa joined us on the watch this morning for awhile. She was thrilled to see the juvies and especially a closer encounter with Dot.ca up on the Wilder Bldg. Allysa was on her bike, so she could move around a lot quicker than I could on foot. Again, I hope she considers helping out next year. We can sure use the help.

We pretty quickly found and ID’d all five Rochester Falcons early this morning. Throughout the morning, we saw flying by our 3 juvies. Geraki still needs a little more practice with her landings, but she’s doing quite well.

Here are some pictures from the morning watch. Enjoy!

Fledge Watch (06/19/20)

Friday, June 19th, 2020

Larry OHeron (06:15 – 08:00)

06:23. Court Street Falcon watch. Beauty is on pan cam.

06:28. Court Street dam promenade Falcon watch. There’s a falcon on the air conditioning unit of the telesca building.

Between Carol’s report and my report, that makes all five.

06:31. Falcon left telesca building, headed west

06:33. Per shaky cam id report of falcon on telesca as g, g just left telesca, headed west.

07:06. Falcon Central. DC left widow’s walk, looped and flew to sw wing ring.

07:36. DC left the wing, followed by beauty, followed by roc. Most of the action happened behind building so we couldn’t really see it, but then roc came in and made a very nice landing under the northeast wing next to Hope.

07:40. G left her position on the extension, flew around the backside of times square, came up State Street and circled back to climb and climb until landing on the ledge several feet below hope. She had to struggle to make the landing, but it was an good attempt.

07:47. Hope flew to the top southern most part of crossroads, above the fire exit shaft.

Friday Morning/Afternoon Fledge Watch – 6/19/20

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

Watchers during my watch: Dana, Kathy O, Larry O, Linda, Sue & Carrie

Weather: Another absolutely gorgeous day! Temps in the 80’s, sunny, blue sky with some clouds. Rain to the south of us, but dry here in Rochester.

I arrived a little after 6:00 am and ended my watch at 2:30 pm. The first falcon I saw was Dot.ca on the west side railing of Widows Walk. I parked my car and walked around to find the others. Pretty quickly I found Hope up on the NW wing ledge. She was eating her breakfast. Roc was below her on the back of the ledge that is above nest box level. Beauty was on pan cam. Now where was Geraki.

I received a tweet from Larry O. He was out on the Court St Bridge and could see a falcon on top of the Telesca Bldg on the air conditioning unit. I walked back to the hole (Aqueduct St) and met Dana. She had seen a juvie on Telesca and saw it fly over to the Times Square Bldg (TSB). Geraki was now on the TSB back extension north side. All 5 Rochester Falcons were now in view.

Kathy O arrived and we settled down to keep watch over the three juvies. Sue joined us later morning and I ended my watch when Carrie arrived.

During the watch there was a lot of flying by the three juvies, including attempts to land on the wing rings on top of the Times Square bldg by both Hope and Geraki. All 3 are flying well, but the girls still need a little practice with landing.

Here are some of my favorite pics from today’s watch. Enjoy!

Andrew Street Falcon watch. Nothing seen from here either.

06:45. Broad Plymouth Falcon watch. I have a juvie on the south side of crossroads.

06:52. I can see one juvie walking from the southwest corner of crossroads to the southeast corner.

07:22. Falcon watch DT. I’ve got one falcon on the north end of crossroads. West side.? Beauty?

02:45 pm. Falcon Central Falcon watch. DC flew from the southwest to the northeast come over to parking lot, around OCSR and never reappeared.

Juvie on the northwest parapet. Don’t see g so I’m assuming that g got up there from the extension ledge.

G poked head out from the ledge of the times square extension. So that means hope is on the northwest parapet.

02:53. Roc also has made it back to times square. So we have hope on the northwest parapet, and on the ledge of the extension we have g&r side-by-side.

Thursday Morning/Afternoon Fledge Watch – 6/18/20

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

Watchers During my Watch: Dana, Kathy O, Larry O and Carol P.

Weather: Another beautiful day in the 80’s. It’s definitely warming up and humidity is rising.

I started my watch a little after 6:00 am and ended it around 1:00 pm today.

When I first arrived, I didn’t hear or see any falcons. The search was on. I noticed movements on the backside of the Times Square Bldg (TSB). It was Geraki playing on what we call the “jungle gym”. I could see her yellow feet.

Geraki on the TSB Jungle Gym
Geraki

Dana arrived and we saw both Beauty and Dot.ca.

Dot.ca on Cross Rds.
Beauty on the Times Square Bldg Parapet

Next, we could see a juvie up on the Cross Rds Bldg. It was Hope.

Hope on Cross Rds.

Roc was next. He was up on Cross Rds with Hope.

Hope and Roc on the Cross Rds Bldg.

It always makes the watchers happy to see all five Rochester Falcons!

Kathy O and Larry O arrived and we settled in for the morning fledge watch. Hope made a nice flight over to the Times Square Bldg and tried to land on the NW wing ledge, but she missed and ended up on the SE parapet. She tried again later and had a perfect landing up there.

Geraki pretty much rested on the north side of the lower section of the Times Square Bldg during our watch. She had done a lot of flying yesterday.

Our highlight with Roc was when he flew off of the Cross Rds Bldg and chased a pigeon across the parking lot in front of us. He missed, but his chase technique was awesome!

Here are some of my favorite pics from today’s watch. Enjoy!

Fledge Watch (06/17/20)

06:15 – 08:05

06:18. Court St. IDs are best guess. DC under northeast wing. Beauty just flew to Mercury. … Both parents left while I was messaging.

06:22. I have a falcon on the south side of times square building. It’s on that long extension that goes back towards Irving place. I think this is a juvie.

I now have two falcons on times square. One is under the Northeast wing. One is on the long office extension on the south side.

06:24. I now have three falcons. one sitting on the cam on powers. One under the Northeast wing. One on the south side of times square office extension.

07:02. Hope is on the west side of the times square office extension.

07:14. Church of two saints. Falcon watch. I can only see the adults on widow’s Walk and h on times square building. Can’t see g anymore.

Juvie just flew onto South extension of times square office building.

07:25. Broad & Exchange. Falcon just flew to the nest box.

07:33. Both parents on widows walk. G on old City Hall. H on times square office extension.

Looks like g left old City Hall. H is gone back in towards the roof on times square. … G is still on old City Hall. She just ducked out of sight.

07:38. Falcon Central. I have both parents on widow’s Walk. h on office extension of times square building. G on old City Hall.

Both g&h are laying down so they might be hard to see depending on where your position is, but I’ve got them both. Along with the parents on widows walk.

07:59. Beauty joined hope on the south face of the West extension of the times square building. … Beauty left and flew back again.

08:00. Beauties cleaning a meal on the times square office extension roof.

Roc just flew in from the northwest to where beauty is on times square.

08:04. DC is on widow’s walk. G is on old City Hall. Can’t see all three at the same time, but beauty and roc and h are on the office extension of times square.

============================================================

02:00 – 03:15 pm

02:04. Broad & Exchange. Beauty and DC took off to the southwest alarm cacking, after a possible juvenile eagle. The two girls are on the north side of times square building, office extension, one level down on parapet wall.

02:26. Both beauty and DC did a return fly by, presumably after chasing off that unwanted intruder. All three young falcons stood up and they are all still on the North face of times square, one level down from the roof of the office extension.

02:31. Roc and one of the girls took off from times square building. We have one girl left on times square, same spot as before. One girl is now on the telesca roof. Roc was doing circles around the parking lot.

02:34. DC is on the powers railing. Beauty is on OCSR, Southeast face. One of the girls is on the telesca chimney. One of the girls is on Time square. Roc is doing circles and is somewhere now.

02:44. The female flew from times square out over and around Wilder and then flew to telesca where it landed on the roof maintenance shack. Or maybe it’s air conditioning. I don’t know.

02:50. Hope remains on times square. Per camera report, g left telesca. We now have a young Falcon on Wilder by the ladder. we also had roc flying circles around the parking lot. Could be roc on Wilder by ladder but it also could be g.

02:51. The young Falcon left Wilder and flew to times square next to the female. Based on size comparison, we think it was g that just left Wilder.

03:02. We think it’s DC on the top I-beam south corner of OCSR. Beauty was doing some laps around OCSR. She disappeared behind the buildings. Both girls are still on Time square building, same place as before.

03:05. Falcon was doing flights over and around wilder again. Probably landed on Union trade building.

03:14. DC was high overhead over the parking lot and he faded from view.

Wednesday Morning/ Afternoon Fledge Watch – 6/17/20

Wednesday, June 17th, 2020

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

Watchers that joined me: Dana, Kathy O, Larry O, Lisa, Carrie & Debbie

Weather: Outstanding! Warm, temp in the 80’s, sunny, slight breeze, blue sky.

Yesterday (6/16/20) started out slow, but ended with a bang! I started my watch at 6:00 am and didn’t leave until 5:30 pm. All day we watched Geraki and Hope exercising their wings on the wall near the nest box. I was just getting ready to leave the watch to Carrie, when Geraki took off from the wall. She flew strong and straight heading northeast over the Wilder Bldg. We did not come out the other side, so we knew she had probably landed up there. We were right. Shaky was able to move the cameras to get a great view of her up there.

Pat arrived just after Geraki fledged. While Carrie and I were trying to get a view of Geraki, we looked back and saw Hope up on the wall flapping her wings. I just had a feeling that she wouldn’t be long to fledge.

We were never able to get a look at Geraki, because she kept moving around. Shaky did a great job keeping her in view on the Rfalconcam camera.

I headed back to the hole after walking around the Wilder Bldg. Pat informed me that Hope had fledged while we were looking for Geraki. So both girls fledged within a 1/2 hr of each other.

Pat said that Hope had flown north towards the Cross Rds Bldg, where Roc was located. She bumped into the building short of the roof. Hope turned back towards the Times Square Bldg, keeping good height. An adult was escorting her across the front of the TSB and past it heading south.

The search was on. We closely watched the behavior of the adults. All indications was that she was on top of one of the buildings on the south side of the Times Square Bldg. The watchers gathered and spread out hoping to see her.

Later that evening, Dana found her on the Monroe Cty Civic Bldg. Hope was just fine. She took off and headed back to the Times Square Bldg, landing on the lower back section. When the watchers left last night, Hope remained where she was, Geraki was on the Irving Place (old City Hall) roof and Roc was alone up at the nest box.

Wednesday 6/17/20 – That brings us to early Wednesday morning. Dana and I arrived downtown a little after 6:00 am. We found Roc on the base of Mercury, Geraki on the Irving Place roof (west of the TSB) and Hope on the south side of the TSB. Both Beauty and Dot.ca were nearby.

We were soon joined by Kathy O, Lisa McK and Larry O. During my watch (6:00 am – 2:00 pm), we saw lots flying by Roc. Geraki took short flights to 3 different buildings, getting higher up each time. She’s doing great! Carrie arrived, so I ended my watch at 2:00 pm. When I left, all three juvies (yes juvies!) were together on the north side of the Times Square Bldg in the shade. I do love it when they are all together. 🙂

Monday Morning/Afternoon Fledge Watch – 6-15-20

Monday, June 15th, 2020

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

Watchers during my watch; Kathy O, Dana, Larry, Sue and Carrie.

Time: 6:30 am – 2:00 pm

Weather: Chilly start, but it warmed up to close to 70 degrees (F) by the time I ended my watch.

Kathy and I immediately found Roc, Geraki and Hope on the wall. They were lined up under Beauty, on the NE wing ledge and Dot.ca on the SE wing ring. It was wonderful seeing the whole family together on the Times Square Bldg (TSB).

There was a lot of activity by both Beauty and Dot.ca during my watch, but no flying by Roc, Geraki and Hope. They remained close to the nest box. After all his flying and chasing yesterday, Roc was taking a break, and the girls weren’t ready to fledge.

Here are some of my favorite pics from today’s fledge watch. Enjoy!

Fledge Watch (06/14/20)

Larry OHeron

06:30 am – 08:30 am

Highlight: Roc flew to Ocsr west corner and chased DC off from there. Roc make an excellent landing. Quite the skill set he is developing.

On street: one falcon on Northwest wing Ring. One Falcon on Northeast corner of Powers near box.

In the hole. DC on wing ring. Two girls on the wall.

Roc left from the times square Northeast wing, headed north. Maybe he’s headed to Powers where beauty is. one of the girls on the wall is going back and forth between the tray and the corner. Wing flapping.

Powers building. Beauty is on the northeast corner. Roc is on the southeast corner.

Downtown Falcon watch. Beauty was on powers but she’s now flown to the underneath the northwest wing of times square. A few minutes ago DC flew north.

Roc is back at the southeast corner of Powers.DC had food on powers and roc is eating. DC went to crossroads. Roc may have just gone to crossroads.

DC is back on the northeast corner of Powers.Beauty is on the north end of crossroads. Roc flew to crossroads and is now walking his way towards beauty. DC is on powers. The two girls are on the wall or the nest box area.Beauty flew to the north under the northwest wing of times square.

DC is on the top I-beam West corner of OCSR.Roc flew from crossroads to the OCSR top I-beam West point and knocked DC off. Nice landing.Roc is made his way all the way over to the north corner, top I-beam of OCSR.DC is on the north end of crossroads. Roc is on the north corner top I-beam of OCSR. End of watch

06:30 pm – 08:00 pm

Highlight: One of the girls was doing some amazing fanning on the north wall. Could be fledging in the next day or two.

Two girls on the bump. roc probably on Wilder. Beauty and DC are somewhere in the area.

I have an adult on the west corner of OCSR. I have a Falcon on the south side lower roof of crossroads. If somebody can swing a camera around and ID those too, that would be useful. (Shaky checked with cameras and could only say that it was an adult on ocsr, and was unsure about falcon on crossroads because the lighting was not the best.)

Believe it was DC that came through at a high rate of speed headed south, then turned around and flew back in front of times square again. The Falcon that was on crossroads is gone.

The girls have been flapping their wings quite extensively. our best guess is that it’s beauty on OCSR, West Corner.

Roc is on the southeast bump walking along the wall on the south side Southeast corner of the building.

Sunday Morning/Afternoon Fledge Watch – 6/14/20

Sunday, June 14th, 2020

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

It was another cold morning. The watchers are dressing in layers, trying to keep warm. Thankfully, it is supposed to warm up soon.

Kathy O and I started the fledge watch at 6:30 am. We quickly found Hope and Geraki on the wall, Dot.ca on the wing ring above them and Beauty on the Powers Bldg. Where was Roc?

Early Morning View

Dot.ca on the Wing Ring

Where was Roc? We looked and looked. That’s when Kathy said, “doesn’t that shadow look like a bird?”

Roc’s Shadow

I took a look through my binoculars and I saw the shadow bird’s head move. We walked across the street and from there we could see Roc up on the back of the NE wing ledge on the Times Square Bldg (TSB).

Roc on the TSB

There was a lot of flying by Roc during the fledge watch and lots of flapping by Geraki and Hope. Everyone was quite busy.

Roc was very busy chasing his parents and even knocked Dot.ca off of the top Ibeam on OCSR, not once, but three times! He was even able to land on the IBeam. Not an easy landing for a young, just fledged juvie.

During the morning watch, we were joined by Larry, Dana, Linda, Sue, Shaky and Lisa. Today I was able to end my watch at 1:00 pm. When I left, Geraki and Hope had not yet fledged.

Here are some of my favorite pictures from my morning watch. Enjoy!
